Google Maps can lose GPS in Android Auto for two different reasons that often appear together: the phone cannot obtain a dependable satellite location, or Android Auto has lost its wired or wireless connection to the car. A “GPS Signal Lost” message points first to reception, permissions, power settings, the phone’s location hardware, or an obstruction such as certain metallic window film. A blank or disconnected car display points first to the cable, USB port, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi setup, compatibility, or the vehicle’s receiver.
Start by identifying which symptom you have. Test the phone’s GPS outside before replacing a cable, and troubleshoot Android Auto’s connection separately from navigation location. This prevents a cable swap from being treated as a cure for weak satellite reception, or a GPS setting change from being used to solve a USB failure.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Android Auto can continue showing a map while one service is failing. The phone may know an approximate position through several location sources even when it cannot maintain a GPS fix. Conversely, Android Auto may disappear from the vehicle display while the phone’s GPS is working normally. Use the symptom that is actually occurring to choose the first test.

| What you see | Most relevant branch | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| “GPS Signal Lost” while actively navigating | Satellite reception, Maps permission, Android Location Accuracy, battery saver, or phone/GPS hardware | Park outside with a clear sky, charge the phone, and test GPS directly |
| Android Auto drops from the car display over USB | Cable, USB port, vehicle compatibility, or aftermarket receiver firmware | Try a suitable data-capable cable and the vehicle’s supported port |
| Android Auto will not complete wireless setup | Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services, pairing, or compatibility | Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services, then repeat setup |
| The map position remains but traffic or online features stop updating | Mobile-data or internet connectivity | Check cellular coverage and data separately from GPS |
These branches can overlap. For example, a weak data connection can stop live traffic while GPS continues to work, and a receiver reboot can remove Android Auto without affecting the phone’s location. Treat each service as a separate system until testing shows otherwise.

What “lost GPS” actually means
A GPS-loss warning means Maps cannot reliably determine the phone’s location from GPS/GNSS at that moment. It does not necessarily mean the satellites or the mapping app are permanently defective. Google notes that satellite signals may be unavailable indoors or underground, and that seeing a position while browsing the map is not proof that the phone has a stable GPS fix for active turn-by-turn navigation.
Location can be estimated with a combination of GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, mobile towers, and device sensors. Those sources can produce a visible dot when a pure satellite fix is weak. Navigation needs a continuing, accurate stream of positions, so the displayed position may disappear or become unreliable when the phone cannot maintain the required accuracy.
Test the phone’s GPS in a clean environment
- Park safely outdoors. Choose an open area with a broad view of the sky, away from a garage, tunnel, tall buildings, or a covered parking structure. Do not diagnose satellite reception while the phone is indoors.
- Charge the phone and turn off conditions that deliberately reduce activity. A low battery or battery-saver mode can restrict location updates. Use the phone while it is well charged for this test.
- Run a dedicated GPS-status test. Google recommends using a GPS-status application to check whether the handset can acquire satellites. This is a cleaner test than opening another navigation app, because another app may rely on non-GPS location sources.
- Allow time for a fix. Remain stationary with the phone exposed to the sky while the test searches. Moving immediately into a tunnel or under a roof can interrupt acquisition before a result is obtained.
- Interpret the result. If the GPS-status test acquires a fix outdoors, the problem is more likely to involve Maps permissions, Android Auto, power management, data, or the car setup. If it cannot acquire GPS under these conditions, persistent failure may require phone or GPS-unit service.
Use the same outdoor test after any setting change. A single successful location dot indoors does not disprove a reception problem, and a brief outage in a tunnel is expected behavior rather than evidence of a damaged phone.

Check Maps permission and Android location settings
Maps permission and precise location
Open the phone’s app-permission controls for Google Maps and confirm that location access is allowed while the app is being used; the exact label differs by Android release and manufacturer. On Android 12 and later, per-app controls can also include a precise-location switch. If precise location is disabled, Maps may receive only an approximate area, which is not sufficient for dependable navigation on every route.
Location Accuracy
Android’s Location Accuracy setting combines available signals to improve the position. Google explains that turning Location Accuracy off limits the phone to GPS and device sensors when available. That restriction can make it harder for Maps to determine a position, particularly where satellite reception is weak. Check the system location settings and enable Location Accuracy if you want Android to use its combined sources.
Menu names and paths vary by Android version and phone maker, so search Settings for “Location,” “Location Services,” or “Location Accuracy” if the labels in your handset differ. Reopen Maps after changing the permission or accuracy setting and test while parked before driving.
Battery Saver and background restrictions
Battery Saver can reduce location-update frequency or restrict background activity. Temporarily disable it for the diagnostic drive, and check whether the phone maker has a separate per-app battery setting that limits Maps. If navigation works only when the screen is on or the phone is connected to power, that pattern points to power management rather than the USB connection itself.

Look for reception obstructions and route-related gaps
GPS signals can be blocked or weakened by the environment. Indoors, underground roads, covered parking, and tunnels are ordinary causes. Google also warns that some glare-reducing window films with a metallic base can interfere with GPS reception. If the problem occurs only inside one vehicle, compare the phone’s behavior outside the car and in a different vehicle before blaming Maps.
Record where the signal disappears. A repeatable outage under a specific roof or stretch of road is different from a loss that occurs on open highways. Do not interpret a tunnel’s temporary “GPS Signal Lost” message as a hardware failure if the position returns after the phone has a clear view of the sky.
Fix a wired Android Auto disconnection
Inspect the cable first
For USB Android Auto, use a short, good-quality data cable that supports both charging and data transfer. Not every USB cable works with every car. A cable can still charge the phone while its data conductors are damaged, causing Android Auto to disconnect or fail to start.
- Unplug the cable from both the phone and the vehicle.
- Check the connectors for lint, bent contacts, looseness, or visible damage; do not force a plug into the port.
- Reconnect to the USB port that the vehicle identifies for smartphone projection. Some vehicles have charging-only ports.
- If the setup worked previously and then stopped, replace the cable with another known-good data-capable cable and test again.
- Keep the phone still during the test. A loose connector can interrupt data when the handset moves, even though charging continues.
Replacing the cable addresses an Android Auto data connection. It does not restore satellite reception and should not be presented as a GPS fix. If Maps still reports lost GPS after Android Auto remains connected, return to the outdoor GPS and location-setting tests.
Confirm compatibility and receiver software
Check that the phone, vehicle model, and infotainment system support Android Auto. If the vehicle uses an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver maker’s firmware information and installation guidance. A receiver that reboots, loses its USB data link, or has outdated projection software can interrupt Android Auto independently of Maps.
If another compatible phone works reliably in the same port and cable, the issue is more likely to be the original phone or its software. If every phone disconnects, suspect the vehicle port, receiver, cable type, or vehicle compatibility instead.

Wireless Android Auto depends on more than Bluetooth audio. During setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled on the phone and follow the vehicle’s pairing prompts. Disabling any of these services can prevent discovery or interrupt the wireless link even when ordinary Bluetooth calls work.

- If pairing fails, remove the old phone entry from the vehicle and the old vehicle pairing from the phone, then repeat setup.
Wireless compatibility is vehicle-specific. If the phone meets the software requirements but setup repeatedly fails, consult the vehicle maker about the infotainment system rather than treating the symptom as a Maps GPS defect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeparate GPS from traffic and internet problems
Live traffic is an Android Auto navigation feature that requires current online data. A map can retain your last known position while traffic colors, search results, or other online elements stop updating because mobile data is unavailable. Check cellular coverage, data restrictions, and airplane mode separately from GPS.
The diagnostic clue is whether the blue position marker moves accurately. If it follows the road but traffic remains stale, investigate data. If the marker disappears or jumps and Maps reports GPS loss, investigate location reception, permissions, and power settings. Android Auto may remain connected in both cases.
What to make of reports of a Google Maps bug
Users have reported cases described as “Google Maps loses GPS signal only when using Android Auto.” In a Google Android Auto community response dated February 9, 2023, team specialist Pawan wrote that a fix was planned for Google Maps version 11.66. That statement applied to the issue described in that 2023 thread and the release planned at that time; it is historical evidence, not a current guarantee that installing version 11.66 will solve a modern problem.
Keep Google Maps and Android system software updated through the normal channels, but do not skip physical and settings tests because a software bug is possible. If the failure began immediately after an update, record the Maps version, Android version, phone model, vehicle model, and whether the connection is wired or wireless. Those details allow support to distinguish a reproducible software issue from a cable, receiver, or reception problem.

When the phone or vehicle needs service
Escalate after the relevant branch has failed its clean test. A phone that cannot acquire GPS outdoors with a clear sky, adequate charge, and a GPS-status test may have a hardware or firmware problem and may need repair. Persistent failure across multiple locations is more significant than a loss limited to tunnels or one coated windshield.
Contact the vehicle maker or receiver maker when Android Auto fails with multiple known-good cables or phones, the infotainment unit reboots, or compatibility remains unclear. For an aftermarket receiver, provide its model and firmware version. For a phone issue, provide the handset model, Android version, Maps version, screenshots of the message, and the result of the outdoor GPS test.
Before requesting help, note the exact sequence: whether the map position vanished, whether Android Auto disappeared from the display, whether only traffic stopped, the connection mode, the cable and port used, and the location conditions. This prevents support from treating separate GPS and projection failures as one symptom.
