Turning the screen off does not necessarily stop Google Maps. If turn-by-turn navigation, location sharing, or another location-dependent feature is still active, the phone can continue receiving location updates, using GPS, communicating with cellular networks, and running background work. The display consumes less power when it is dark, but route guidance can continue until you end the route or the operating system suspends it.
That behavior can be normal during active navigation, but it is not proof that every overnight or idle battery drop is caused by Maps. Weak cellular coverage, another app using location, battery condition, device settings, and the phone’s battery-management rules can all change the result. Diagnose which activity occurred before restricting permissions or blaming Maps.
What can keep using power after the screen turns off?
A dark display only stops screen rendering. It does not automatically terminate every process associated with navigation. During an active route, Maps may need to keep determining your position, calculate the route, provide spoken guidance, and communicate when map or traffic information is needed.
Location updates and GPS
Turn-by-turn guidance depends on repeated location updates. The phone’s location system may combine GPS with other positioning sources, and the frequency and conditions of those updates affect power use. When the route is still running, the phone can continue requesting location even though the map is no longer visible.

Cellular communication
Navigation can exchange data for maps, traffic, rerouting, and other route information. Poor reception is especially relevant: a phone working harder to maintain a connection or repeatedly retrying communication can use more energy than it would in strong coverage.
Background navigation work
Maps can continue route guidance and audio prompts while the app is not in the foreground. The operating system may report this as background activity. A screen-off session can therefore contain useful navigation work rather than an idle app simply sitting open.
Map rendering matters mainly while the display is on
Google’s Navigation SDK documentation identifies repeated map and interface rendering as one contributor to navigation power use. That explanation is important while the map is displayed. Once the screen is actually off, ongoing location, route guidance, radio communication, and other background processes are more plausible explanations for continued drain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle describes heavy navigation use as capable of draining a device battery faster than expected. That is a general explanation of navigation mechanisms, not a promise that every Google Maps session will consume a particular amount.
Two different problems that look the same
| Situation | What is probably happening | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Active route with the screen off | Maps is still providing guidance and requesting location updates; GPS and cellular activity continue. | Whether navigation is still running, whether voice guidance is active, and whether coverage is weak. |
| Maps appears after navigation has ended | Background location, location sharing, another Maps feature, or an operating-system activity may still be present. | Battery-usage details, Maps permissions, and the time at which the route ended. |
| Battery falls when Maps is not involved | The cause may be another app, poor signal, notifications, battery wear, or a device-wide fault. | The phone’s complete battery report and, where available, built-in diagnostics. |
Do not infer a cause from one percentage alone. Compare the battery activity during a route, after the route, and on a comparable day without navigation.

How to confirm whether Maps is responsible
Android and Pixel phones
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage. Menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android release.
- Review the app list for the period in which the battery fell. Select Google Maps to see whether its activity was foreground or background, where the device exposes that distinction.
- On Pixel phones, review any available background-usage controls for Maps. Google notes that some battery steps apply specifically to Android 14 and later.
- If you use a Pixel 6 or later, open the phone’s Battery diagnostics when available. Use the result alongside the per-app report rather than treating it as a definitive explanation.
Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other Android manufacturers can use different labels, additional automatic restrictions, or separate “sleeping apps” controls. Use the equivalent battery-usage and app-battery screens for your model.
iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Battery.
- Use the Daily Usage chart to select the day and time window when the charge dropped.
- Review App and System Activity Usage and select Maps if it appears.
- Look for labels such as Background Activity, which can include location tracking, and indicators for Low Signal or notifications.
- Compare the Maps entry with another day and with the phone’s overall activity. A listing shows that an app or system function used energy; it does not by itself prove that function caused every percentage point of loss.
Apple’s battery view can separate background activity from other contributors, making it useful for distinguishing active route guidance from an unrelated drain.
Check the navigation state before changing permissions
The quickest diagnostic is often the simplest: look at Maps and verify whether a route is still active. End the route when you arrive instead of leaving turn-by-turn guidance running. Then observe whether Maps continues to appear in the battery report during the next comparable period.
Also check whether you enabled a feature that legitimately needs location after the route, such as location sharing or another location-dependent Maps function. On both major platforms, background location permission can allow an app to obtain location while it is not on screen. The exact controls differ by operating-system version and phone manufacturer.
iPhone permission path
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select Maps, and review the available permission choice. Restricting access can reduce background location activity, but it can also interfere with navigation or other location features. Choose a setting that matches how you use Maps rather than disabling location blindly.

Android permission path
Open Settings > Apps > Maps > Permissions > Location on phones that use this standard path. Manufacturer overlays may rename or rearrange these screens. If background location is available as a separate choice, understand that removing it can stop or impair features that need location when Maps is not visible.

Navigation is not just a GPS task. The phone may need cellular data for map tiles, traffic information, route changes, and other updates. In a basement, rural area, underground car park, or other low-coverage location, the radio can use more power while searching for or maintaining service. Apple identifies low signal as a battery contributor, and Google’s navigation guidance likewise warns that poor connectivity can increase power use.
Test this without changing several settings at once. Compare two similar trips or rest periods: one in reliable coverage and one in the weak-signal area. Keep the route length, screen behavior, and other conditions as similar as practical. A large difference points toward connectivity as a contributor, although it does not exclude GPS or another background task.
Safe ways to reduce unnecessary drain
End navigation when the trip is over
Stopping the route is a diagnostic and a sensible operating habit. It removes active turn-by-turn guidance from the test. Do not expect a guaranteed battery saving amount; the result depends on what else the phone is doing.
Use the platform’s battery controls carefully
Android phones may offer background-usage limits, adaptive battery controls, or manufacturer-specific restrictions. iPhone includes Low Power Mode, which reduces or disables some functions, including Background App Refresh. These controls can lower background work, but they may delay updates or change app behavior.

Apply a restriction only after identifying the activity you want to stop. A blanket restriction can make route guidance less reliable, prevent timely location updates, or interrupt another feature you intentionally use.
Reduce exposure to poor coverage when practical
For long drives, downloading maps for offline use where that feature is available can reduce some data needs, but it does not eliminate GPS or all location-related power use. Offline availability and traffic behavior vary, so do not treat it as a universal fix for screen-off drain.
Keep brightness in perspective
Brightness is a real battery contributor while the screen is on. It cannot explain continued loss when the display is genuinely off. If the phone’s battery report points to screen-on time rather than background activity, brightness may matter; otherwise, investigate location, signal, and background work first.

Investigate beyond Maps when the phone loses substantial charge while no route is active, the battery report attributes little or no usage to Maps, or the same pattern continues with location services and background apps controlled. Other apps, repeated notifications, poor reception, a worn battery, and system processes can all be involved.

- Check the complete battery-usage list instead of focusing only on Maps.
- Look for another app with location or background activity during the same time window.
- Review whether the phone spent the period searching for service.
- Install available operating-system and app updates if your device recommends them.
- Use the manufacturer’s battery diagnostics where provided.
- If unusual drain persists across normal use, follow the phone maker’s support guidance for battery health or hardware service.
Battery condition is a device-wide issue. A replacement may eventually be appropriate for an aged or damaged battery, but app-level diagnosis should come first so that a new battery does not mask an ongoing software or signal problem.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Google’s Maps help explains that some phones may disable GPS in particular battery-saving situations, including when the battery is low and the screen is off or when Maps is in the background. In other words, screen-off behavior depends partly on the phone and its power settings. A screen going dark does not guarantee that GPS remains active, and it does not guarantee that all navigation activity stops.
The available official guidance does not establish a universal percentage, hourly drain rate, or “normal” screen-off battery figure for Google Maps. Device model, operating-system version, signal conditions, route behavior, battery age, and other apps make a single benchmark misleading. Treat any precise number presented without those conditions skeptically.
Should you use a car charger?
A USB-C car charger can replenish charge during a long drive when it is compatible with the phone and provides suitable charging power. It does not make Maps consume less energy and it cannot correct abnormal idle drain. If the phone is being used for navigation, charging speed can also depend on the cable, adapter, temperature, and the phone’s charging limits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a charger as a practical power source while you diagnose the cause, not as a substitute for checking whether navigation ended, whether Maps is using background location, or whether weak coverage is driving the extra consumption.
A repeatable troubleshooting test
- Record the starting battery percentage and confirm the phone’s battery-saver state.
- Run a normal route, then end navigation explicitly when it is finished.
- Note signal conditions and whether location sharing or another location feature was enabled.
- With the screen off, leave the phone for a comparable period.
- Check the platform-specific battery report and note Maps, background activity, low signal, and other major entries.
- Repeat on a day with stronger coverage or without an active route, changing one condition at a time.
- If the drain remains device-wide, use battery diagnostics or manufacturer support rather than continually tightening Maps permissions.
This comparison separates active screen-off navigation from unexpected activity after navigation ends. It also avoids mistaking a single battery reading for a diagnosis.
