Google Fitbit Edge is a fitness tracker with a screen, GPS and extensive health monitoring, but it cannot make contactless payments: the device has no NFC hardware, so Google Wallet tap-to-pay is unavailable. Its safety tools can detect certain health events, yet it is not the same as a Pixel Watch with LTE-based emergency communications.
Why Fitbit Edge has no NFC
Google’s official Edge announcement does not give a direct reason for omitting NFC. Launch coverage from WIRED and Android Central confirms that the tracker lacks NFC and therefore cannot use Google Wallet for tap-to-pay.
AndroidPure, citing Android Police, reported that Google prioritized other features and said fewer than 1% of Charge 6 users used its payment function. That percentage is secondary reporting rather than a figure published on Google’s launch page, so it should be treated as Google’s reported rationale, not an independently verified adoption study.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical result is straightforward: Edge can display notifications and track workouts, but you must carry a phone, card or another payment-enabled device when you shop.

What safety and health functions Edge does include
Google’s Store listing gives Edge a substantial set of health alerts and sensors:
- High- and low-heart-rate alerts
- Irregular Rhythm Notifications
- Loss of Pulse Detection
- Breathing Emergency
- Built-in GPS
- An altimeter for elevation data
These functions monitor signals and can notify you or a connected phone. They do not make Edge a medical diagnostic device. Google’s safety guidance warns that heart-rate monitoring may pose risks for some people with health conditions; anyone with symptoms or a relevant diagnosis should follow advice from a qualified clinician rather than relying on a wearable alert.

Why Edge does not replace Pixel Watch emergency calling
Google’s Pixel Watch documentation describes a broader emergency stack built around LTE or a connected phone, Emergency Location Service and regional network support. Depending on model and location, Pixel Watch can contact emergency services without a nearby phone when LTE service is available. Google’s breathing-emergency announcement also says that an unacknowledged alert can prompt a connected phone or LTE watch to call emergency services.
Edge’s official product information lists health alerts, but not that same responder-contact system. AndroidPure’s report attributes Google’s explanation to the deeper LTE and Wi-Fi integration required for a device to contact emergency services on the wearer’s behalf. In other words, Edge can identify some potentially serious events; the Pixel Watch emergency system is designed to communicate outside the device.

Edge and Pixel Watch: which fits your needs?
| Capability | Fitbit Edge | Pixel Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless payments | No NFC; Google Wallet tap-to-pay unavailable | Supported on compatible models and in supported regions; verify the exact model and country |
| Emergency response | Health and safety alerts; no documented equivalent to the LTE emergency-calling stack | Documentation covers phone-assisted and LTE emergency calling plus Emergency Location Service, subject to network and regional availability |
| Battery and size | Google claims up to seven days of battery life and 11.5 mm thickness | Typically prioritizes smartwatch functions over tracker-style endurance; battery varies by model |
| Weight claim | Google says Edge is 45% lighter than Apple Watch Series 12 | Comparison depends on the watch model and band |
| Phone compatibility | Android 11 or newer; iOS 16.4 or newer | Compatibility depends on the Pixel Watch generation and phone |
Choose Edge if long battery life, a slimmer tracker form and health-focused monitoring matter more than payments or standalone communication. Choose Pixel Watch if you need a smartwatch platform, contactless payments or LTE-supported emergency calling, and confirm that your carrier and region support the safety features you expect.
Battery, setup and ongoing requirements
Google’s published Edge figures are claims, not independent test results: up to seven days of battery life, 11.5 mm thickness and 45% lower weight than Apple Watch Series 12. Actual endurance changes with GPS use, notifications, sensor settings and software.

Bottom line for buyers
Fitbit Edge’s missing NFC is a deliberate product trade-off, not a software setting you can enable later. The tracker concentrates on health measurements, GPS and week-long endurance while leaving tap-to-pay and the deepest emergency communications to the Pixel Watch line. If you can live without wrist payments and always have a phone available for help, Edge covers core fitness and health tracking in a lighter, longer-lasting design. If your priority is contacting responders from your wrist, select a compatible Pixel Watch model with the required LTE service instead.
