The three-dot menu on a Google ad opens information and controls for that specific advertisement. Depending on the ad, device, account, country, and Google surface, it can show who paid for the ad, why Google selected it for you, how AI-edited or AI-created assets were used, a reporting form, or a control to mute that individual ad. It is not a universal ad blocker: muting one ad does not remove every ad from the advertiser, stop advertising about a whole subject, or prove that an ad violated a policy.
What the three dots on a Google ad mean
The icon is Google’s More menu for ad transparency and personal controls. Selecting it asks Google to show details or actions associated with the ad currently on screen. The menu is contextual, so two ads can present different choices. An option may also differ between Google Search, YouTube, partner sites, mobile apps, and desktop browsers.
Google’s My Ad Center documentation identifies four information or safety choices: About this advertiser, Why this ad, How this ad was made when the creative uses qualifying AI assets, and Report this ad. Google’s separate ad-muting help describes Mute this ad or Stop seeing this ad where that control is available.

About this advertiser: identify who paid
Choose About this advertiser when your first question is who is behind the promotion. The panel is intended to provide information about the party that paid for the ad. This is different from asking why the ad was targeted to you: advertiser identity concerns the sponsor, while targeting concerns Google’s delivery explanation.

Use this choice before clicking an unfamiliar promotion if you want to distinguish a company, organization, or other advertising entity from the product or service named in the creative. The panel supplies disclosure information; it does not independently verify the advertiser’s promises, safety, licensing, or business practices.
Why this ad: understand Google’s stated delivery factors
Why this ad explains the main factors Google used to show that specific ad. Google describes this as an explanation of its primary reasons, not a full list of every input in its advertising systems. Factors can relate to the context of the page or search, broad account or activity signals, and ad settings, but the panel should be read as Google’s stated summary rather than a technical audit.
This distinction matters when an explanation seems incomplete. The panel does not certify that the ad’s claims are accurate, safe, or suitable for you. If the concern is misleading content or a policy violation, use Report this ad rather than treating the explanation as a quality judgment.

How this ad was made: when AI information appears
How this ad was made is conditional. Google says it can appear when an ad uses AI-edited or AI-created assets. It is not a promise that every ad made with software assistance will carry a label, and it will not appear on ads that do not meet Google’s criteria for this disclosure.
Google’s ad-AI labeling information says a disclosure is placed in this section for designated AI-created or edited assets. Visible labels apply in some geographies, including the European Union, India, and New York. That geographic qualification means the wording and visibility can differ elsewhere. The absence of this option should not be interpreted as proof that no automation was used; it means the ad does not currently expose this particular Google explanation.
Report this ad: ask Google to review a problem
Use Report this ad if you believe an advertisement is misleading, unsafe, or inconsistent with Google’s advertising policies. A report is a request for review. Google says it assesses reports and may take action when appropriate, but the act of reporting is not a finding that the advertiser broke a rule.

Ways to submit a report
Google documents several routes:
- Open the three-dot menu on the ad and choose Report this ad when the option is shown.
- Review recent ads in My Ad Center and report the relevant item.
- Use Google’s Ads Transparency Center to locate advertising information and report an ad through the available controls.
- Submit the issue through Google’s ad-report form when the on-ad control is unavailable.
Provide the reason that best matches the problem and enough context for Google to identify the ad. If the ad concerns fraud, threats, or an immediate safety risk, preserve the ad’s details and use any appropriate local consumer-protection or emergency channel as well; the Google report is not an emergency response service.
Mute this ad or Stop seeing this ad: reduce one ad’s impressions
Muting is the exposure-control option. Select Mute this ad or Stop seeing this ad, then choose a reason if Google offers one. Google’s examples include Already purchased and Repetitive. The preference is aimed at the individual ad, not every promotion from the advertiser.
Muting does not block all advertising, turn off a subject category, or guarantee that a campaign disappears. Advertisers can use multiple formats and styles, and Google notes that blocked-ad controls can be imperfect. You may therefore see a different creative, a related ad, or another advertiser covering the same subject.

Individual-ad controls versus topic preferences
These controls operate at different levels:

How to use the menu for common situations
If you want to know who is behind the ad
- Open the ad’s three-dot More menu.
- Select About this advertiser.
- Read the disclosure before deciding whether to visit the advertiser or interact with the offer.
If you want Google’s explanation for seeing it
- Open the three-dot menu on the ad.
- Select Why this ad.
- Use the explanation to understand Google’s main stated delivery factors; do not treat it as a verification of the ad’s claims.
If you want to inspect AI disclosure
- Open the menu.
- Look for How this ad was made.
- Read the available disclosure and note that labels and availability vary by qualifying asset and geography.
If you want fewer appearances of that exact ad
- Open the menu while the ad is visible.
- Choose Mute this ad or Stop seeing this ad.
- Select a reason if prompted and confirm the choice.
If the ad appears deceptive or unsafe
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Report this ad, if available.
- Select the closest policy concern and submit the report, or use My Ad Center, Ads Transparency Center, or Google’s report form if the menu does not provide the route.
Why a menu option may be missing
Google does not promise an identical menu for every ad. The ad format, platform, country, feature rollout, account state, and the presence of qualifying creative can change which choices appear. In particular, the AI-production option requires AI-edited or AI-created assets, while the mute control is governed by separate eligibility rules.
Google’s ad-muting help identifies several reasons the mute control might be absent: the ad may be a reservation ad, you may be signed out, ad personalization may be turned off, or a browser extension may interfere with the overlay. Try the following checks:

- Confirm that you are signed in if the surface normally supports account-based ad controls.
- Check whether ad personalization is enabled in your Google ad settings.
- Temporarily test the page without an extension that modifies ads, scripts, or overlays.
- Try the relevant ad again on the same supported platform rather than assuming another surface has identical controls.
- Use My Ad Center or Google’s report form when an on-ad report or mute button is unavailable.
These steps can restore a control that is being hidden by account or browser conditions, but they cannot force Google to offer an option that the ad format or region does not support.

What the three-dot menu does not do
- It does not guarantee that every ad has the same options.
- Why this ad does not reveal every signal Google may use or validate the advertiser’s statements.
- How this ad was made does not label every form of editing or every AI-assisted workflow worldwide.
- Muting one ad does not disable all ads, block an advertiser’s complete campaign, or suppress an entire topic category.
- Reporting an ad does not itself prove a violation or guarantee removal.
Practical examples
You already bought the product
Choose the mute control and, if offered, select Already purchased. This communicates that the individual ad is no longer useful to you. It does not prevent a different version of the campaign from appearing.
The same promotion keeps returning
Use Mute this ad or Stop seeing this ad and select Repetitive if that reason is presented. If related creatives continue, they may be separate ads rather than a failure of the single-ad preference.
You are concerned about a financial or health claim
Open About this advertiser to identify the payer, then use Report this ad if the content appears misleading or violates policy. The identity panel and the report serve different purposes and can be used together.
You see an unfamiliar synthetic image or video
Look for How this ad was made. If Google has designated the asset as AI-created or edited and the feature is available in your location, the section can provide the relevant disclosure. If it is absent, do not infer a definitive conclusion about the production process.
Bottom line for using the menu
Think of the three dots as a choice between learning, changing exposure, and requesting review. Use About this advertiser for payer identity, Why this ad for Google’s delivery explanation, How this ad was made for qualifying AI disclosure, and Report this ad for a policy review. Use the mute control only when you want less of that individual ad, and use the Sensitive tab in My Ad Center when your goal is a broader subject-category preference.
