Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport says Tesla’s “FSD” name is somewhat misleading because the system does not take over the full driving task. The ministry describes it as driver assistance: it can support steering, acceleration and braking, but the driver must remain attentive. As of the ministry’s 6 October 2026 statement, European-level recognition procedures were underway, and Tesla had offered—but had not yet been reported to implement—a different name: “Tesla Assisted Driving.”
Why does Germany say Tesla Full Self-Driving is misleading?
In a statement dated 6 October 2026, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport said the name “FSD” was “somewhat misleading” because the system does not assume the complete driving task. The ministry described it as a driver-assistance system that can support acceleration, braking and steering, while the driver must remain attentive at all times. The ministry’s statement identifies Transport Minister Steffen Bilger as supporting timely Europe-wide approval; the quoted characterization is institutional ministry wording, not a direct personal quote from Bilger.
The ministry’s exact German wording is: „Allerdings ist der aktuelle Name „FSD“ etwas irreführend. Es geht hierbei nicht um ein System, das die vollständige Fahraufgabe übernimmt. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um ein Fahrerassistenzsystem, das bestimmte Fahraufgaben wie Beschleunigen, Bremsen und Lenken unterstützen kann. Der Fahrer muss jedoch jederzeit aufmerksam bleiben. Tesla hat angeboten, das System in „Tesla Assisted Driving“ umzubenennen.“

The ministry said procedures to recognize Tesla’s driver-assistance system were taking place at European level as of 6 October 2026. Its statement does not say that recognition had been granted, identify the specific authority or application, describe the procedural stage, or give a decision date. It therefore supports saying that procedures were underway—not that approval was complete or assured.

German law provides a separate legal framework for vehicles using an autonomous driving function. Under Section 1e of the Road Traffic Act (StVG), such operation is conditioned on technical requirements, an applicable operating permit or type approval, an approved operating area and road registration. The provision describes capabilities and system-limit responses associated with autonomous driving functions, and assigns the operating permit to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) when statutory requirements are met. This is legal context; the ministry did not say that Section 1e governs the particular European recognition procedure for Tesla’s system.
Does Tesla FSD drive the car by itself in Germany?
The ministry’s description does not characterize the system as taking over the full driving task. It says the system may assist with steering, acceleration and braking, while the driver remains attentive. A product’s “Full Self-Driving” name does not, by itself, establish that it is legally autonomous or authorized under the distinct statutory framework for autonomous driving functions.

What does Tesla want to rename Full Self-Driving?
The ministry reported that Tesla had offered to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving.” That was an offer reported in the 6 October 2026 statement, not confirmation that the new name had taken effect.
