Impossible Creatures is the likely cult classic behind this title’s “Impossible” clue: a PC real-time strategy game built around combining animal traits to create custom combat units. That unusual idea—not a confirmed connection to Gears of War: E-Day—is the strongest case for giving the older game a second chance. No revival announcement is established.
What is Impossible Creatures?
Impossible Creatures is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Microsoft for PC. Its defining mechanic lets players collect animal DNA and combine traits to build mutant creatures for battle, as described in The Washington Post’s 2003 review.

The game sets its story in the 1930s, with a laboratory and a rival scientist framing the conflict. That period setting gives the creature-building premise a pulpy science-fiction backdrop rather than a contemporary military one.
What made the original game distinctive?
Players designed the units they sent into battle
Instead of choosing only from a fixed roster, players could mix animal features into custom combatants. That makes the central strategy question unusually personal: which traits belong together, and what kind of battlefield role can the resulting creature fill? The Washington Post’s review describes the DNA-collection and combination premise, though it does not establish how every combination performs.
#1 Best Overall
Its launch-era scope was substantial
A 2002 GameSpot report on Microsoft and Relic’s announcement listed more than 50 animals, a 15-mission single-player campaign, 14 islands, and multiplayer for up to six players. These are specifications reported at launch, not evidence of current online player counts or present-day service availability. GameSpot’s 2002 announcement report is the source for those figures.
Why would it deserve a second chance?
The original’s core hook remains easy to explain and hard to confuse with another strategy game: build creatures by combining animal characteristics, then put those creations into RTS battles. A revival could make that idea easier to discover and play on current systems, while preserving the experimentation that defines the concept.

- Thousands of units: “Impossible Creatures” has more than 50 animals that can be combined to create a vast number of mutant creatures, the results of which are limited only by players’ creativity.
- Explore rich 3-D worlds – The highly detailed, fully 3-D dynamic world allows players to battle in four richly detailed environments, each with special flora and fauna.
- Fully remastered to work with modern systems
That is an argument for revisiting the game, not proof that a remake, sequel, or re-release would succeed. The available evidence does not establish the original’s sales, the size of a current audience, or what technical work a modern edition would require. The case rests on the distinctive design and the opportunity to present it to players who may never have encountered it.

Gears of War: E-Day is framed in the supplied context as a return to the franchise’s origins, while Impossible Creatures is a PC RTS. Their supported common ground is the idea of revisiting older franchise or game identities; their genres and core play are different. Nothing established here shows that E-Day’s mechanics directly resemble creature construction in Impossible Creatures.
So the connection is best read as a personal wish prompted by the prospect of a familiar series looking backward: if Xbox is revisiting its gaming past, this is another distinctive Microsoft-associated game worth remembering. It should not be mistaken for a claim about what the E-Day developers intend.

No revival announcement is established by the available sources. They also do not establish who currently controls the game’s rights or whether a physical copy is currently available. Microsoft’s historical role as publisher is documented, but that alone does not prove present ownership or plans.
