Fitness apps can help people become more active on average, but that does not mean every app user will stick with a plan. AI may tailor coaching and prompts, yet current evidence does not show that it fixes motivation or adherence for everyone. The key distinction: opening an app, following a plan, and becoming more active are different outcomes.

Do fitness apps actually work?

Digital activity interventions can increase physical activity on average, though the evidence combines varied tools and populations rather than measuring one type of consumer fitness app. A 2024 umbrella review in npj Digital Medicine covered 47 meta-analyses, 507 randomized controlled trials, and 206,873 participants. After intervention, the pooled average difference was 1,329 more steps per day and 44.8 more minutes of total physical activity per week. The authors reported substantial variation across studies, so these averages are not a promise of individual results. Read the umbrella review.

The same review found that evidence from the limited available follow-up analyses was less certain: effects on steps and total activity were not statistically significant. An increase during an active program therefore does not establish that the change will last after its support ends.

Why can’t I stick with a fitness app?

There is no single established dropout rate that applies to all consumer fitness apps. Studies define engagement and discontinuation differently, follow people for different lengths of time, and test different interventions. A standalone digital behavior-change review published in 2025 included multiple formats, such as apps and wearables, and does not supply a universal consumer-app dropout figure. See the 2025 review.

It also helps to separate three things that are often treated as if they were the same:

  • App engagement: opening or interacting with the app.
  • Adherence: following the plan or recommendations it provides.
  • Physical activity: movement outcomes such as steps, active minutes, or exercise.

A person might stop checking an app while continuing to exercise, or open it regularly without following the plan. Research reporting more steps does not, by itself, show that users opened an app more often or adhered to a prescribed workout schedule.

Plans and prompts meet real-life constraints

Apps vary in their goal setting, feedback, self-monitoring, coaching, social features, and delivery. A plan may not fit someone’s schedule, current ability, equipment, access, or preferred kind of exercise. Reminders can prompt action, but they cannot remove those practical barriers or guarantee that an ambitious target remains realistic as circumstances change. These are plausible reasons an app may not translate into a lasting routine, not causes quantified by the reviews cited here.

What can AI fitness coaching change?

AI can automate parts of an intervention, including personalized content, educational support, activity or engagement monitoring, motivational prompts, questionnaires, and sometimes goal setting. In human-in-the-loop approaches, a coach may monitor, adjust, and validate AI recommendations. These features can change how support is delivered; they do not establish that the system will remove every barrier to exercise.

A 2025 systematic review of human, AI, and hybrid digital health coaching found generally positive physical-activity trends in AI-only coaching studies, but interventions and measures varied. Results for hybrid approaches were mixed. The findings support cautious interest in AI coaching, not a universal adherence fix or proof that a consumer chatbot is equivalent to a validated coaching intervention. They also do not establish that AI itself, rather than other parts of an intervention, caused any improvement. Read the coaching review.

Do gamification and trackers solve the problem?

Gamification can add a small activity boost

A 2024 review of 36 trials involving 10,079 participants compared digital health apps with and without gamification. Gamified apps produced an average difference of 489 steps per day, which the authors described as trivial. The review also found modest changes in some body-composition outcomes. This suggests that game-like features may support small average changes in studied interventions; it does not show that rewards or challenges guarantee motivation, retention, or lasting activity. A wearable measures activity; it does not create adherence

A fitness tracker watch can be an optional way to measure steps or activity. The reviewed digital interventions included wearable formats, but they do not establish that buying a tracker makes someone adhere to a fitness plan. A phone or a wearable you already own may be enough if it measures what you want to monitor.

How to judge whether an AI fitness app fits you

Rather than treating “AI” as a guarantee, check how the app’s support works and whether it matches your needs:

  • Personalization: Does it adapt to your schedule, ability, equipment, and progress, or mainly offer a fixed library?
  • Feedback and measurement: What does it track, how does it show progress, and can you use a phone or device you already have?
  • Support model: Are prompts automated, is a human coach involved, or does a person review AI suggestions?
  • Behavior-change features: Does it help set realistic goals and offer useful reminders, progress feedback, social support, challenges, or rewards?
  • Evidence and continuity: What outcome was measured, in which population, and over what period? Was activity assessed after active support ended?
  • Practical fit: Check accessibility, privacy, cost, device compatibility, and whether the exercise format suits you.

Evidence for a feature or intervention is not automatically evidence for every product that uses it. For example, a 2023 review of apps providing personalized exercise videos in a rehabilitation context found uncertain adherence evidence. That population and intervention differ from general consumer fitness apps, so the result is a caution about the limits of the evidence rather than a direct estimate of how mainstream apps perform. See the rehabilitation-app review.
