Facebook usually makes a sharp upload look softer because it creates resized, compressed derivatives and separate previews for the Timeline instead of displaying your original file everywhere. You cannot turn off every server-side transformation, but you can remove most avoidable damage: export a web-ready copy in sRGB, resize it once for the intended placement, save JPEG only once at a sensible quality, upload over reliable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and judge the opened photo rather than the small Timeline thumbnail.
What Facebook does to an uploaded photo
Facebook says photos are optimized for visual quality, including HD quality, when uploaded. Optimization means the service prepares several versions for different screens, connection speeds and interface locations. A Timeline card may use a smaller preview, while opening the photo requests another derivative. The displayed asset therefore may not be byte-for-byte identical to your upload.
That processing balances three competing goals: retaining image detail, keeping the JPEG payload small and getting the image onto the screen quickly. Meta’s engineering documentation describes historical systems in which a preview carried a visual impression of about 200 bytes so a client could avoid an additional request for image bytes. That is a documented engineering example, not a current universal file-size limit.

Why a thumbnail can look worse than the opened photo
A small Timeline or News Feed tile is a preview with its own dimensions and compression choices. Fine text and hair detail can look smeared at that size even when the larger view is acceptable. Open the post’s photo at its largest available view before deciding that the original was ruined.

Why colors change
Meta’s engineering team says Facebook and most of the web use the sRGB color profile. The standard sRGB definition is about 3 KB, a meaningful overhead for small thumbnails. If a wide-gamut file is uploaded without a correctly handled profile, colors can shift even when pixel dimensions stay the same. Converting a copy to sRGB before upload gives Facebook the color space it expects.
The reliable pre-upload workflow
- Keep a master, make a web copy. Preserve your RAW or wide-gamut working file. Export a separate copy for Facebook so your archive is not restricted to sRGB or reduced dimensions.
- Convert to sRGB. In your editor, choose a command such as “Convert to Profile” or “Convert to sRGB,” rather than merely assigning a different profile. Embed the sRGB profile when the export dialog offers that option.
- Resize once. Set the web copy to the dimensions you actually need for the post’s composition. Facebook’s ideal dimensions vary by placement and can change with the product UI, so avoid treating an old size chart as a permanent rule. Pre-resizing lets you inspect edges, text and sharpening before Facebook resamples the file.
- Sharpen after resizing. Apply modest output sharpening to the reduced copy. Over-sharpening creates halos that become more obvious after JPEG encoding.
- Export once as JPEG at a high practical quality. Use a quality setting that preserves important detail without creating an unnecessarily huge file. Do not repeatedly open and save the same JPEG in several apps; every lossy save can add blocking and ringing around edges.
- Upload on a stable connection. Facebook explicitly recommends Wi‑Fi or a strong mobile signal because network conditions affect upload quality and reliability. Let the upload finish instead of switching networks mid-transfer.
- Use Facebook’s editor deliberately. Before posting, use its crop and rotate controls to set the final composition. You can also add text and alternative text. Avoid relying on a later crop that forces another resampling decision.
- Inspect the posted image. Open the photo itself at the largest view available. Compare it with the exported upload, not with your untouched master. Check small type, straight lines, faces and saturated colors.
Settings that prevent common quality losses
Choose the right source for text and graphics
Photos tolerate moderate JPEG compression better than screenshots, logos and tiny typography. If an image contains one-pixel lines or small labels, enlarge the design or simplify it before export. Thin details may disappear when Facebook creates a smaller derivative.
Do not chase an “HD” switch that is not documented
Facebook’s help guidance refers to optimized uploads, including HD quality, but public help does not promise a user-controlled switch that disables all Timeline recompression. App versions and account interfaces can expose different upload preferences; none should be treated as a guarantee that the server will preserve the original bytes.

Use the original orientation and crop intentionally
Phones can store orientation as metadata. Confirm that your editor has applied the rotation before export, then check the result in an ordinary image viewer. A file that appears upright in one app but relies on an orientation flag can be interpreted differently by another processing step.
Diagnose the symptom before changing the file
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Soft in the Timeline but acceptable when opened | Small preview derivative | Open the largest view; judge that asset instead of the tile. |
| Soft everywhere | Source was out of focus, oversized and resampled, or repeatedly JPEG-saved | Resize once, sharpen after resizing, export once at high practical quality and retry. |
| Colors look different | Wide-gamut or missing/mishandled profile | Convert the upload copy to tagged sRGB and compare again. |
| Text has halos or blocks | Tiny type, one-pixel lines or aggressive/repeated JPEG compression | Use larger type and a clean single export. |
| Upload appears unusually poor or incomplete | Weak Wi‑Fi/mobile signal or an interrupted transfer | Retry on a stable connection before altering the image. |
| Profile photo will not upload | File is too small or the app/session is stuck | Use at least 320×320 pixels, update or restart the app, check Wi‑Fi/data, refresh and retry. |
Color management in practical terms
A camera or editing application may work in Display P3, Adobe RGB or another wider space. Those spaces can contain colors outside sRGB, but Facebook’s documented web baseline is sRGB. “Assigning” sRGB merely changes the label and can make colors wrong; “converting” recalculates pixel values so the appearance is preserved as closely as possible in the new space. Export a converted copy, retain the wide-gamut master, and view both in a color-managed application when checking the result.
When troubleshooting a color shift, download or otherwise obtain the displayed copy if Facebook provides that option, then compare it with the exact file you uploaded. Look at neutral grays, skin tones and highly saturated areas. A difference limited to the tiny preview may be normal derivative behavior; a difference in the opened image points more strongly to profile conversion or compression.

Performance, reliability and realistic limits
Larger originals give Facebook more pixels to process and transmit. They are not automatically sharper after resampling. A correctly resized copy is faster to upload and gives you control over how detail and sharpening survive the reduction.
JPEG quality is a delivery trade-off, not a magic number. Raising quality can preserve more source detail while increasing payload size; lowering it can accelerate transfer while making blocks and ringing more visible. Export once at the highest practical setting that produces a reasonably sized file for your connection and audience.
Meta has published examples of delivery improvements, including about 10% less data and about 15% faster display in a Facebook for iOS improvement. Those figures describe that historical engineering change, not a promise for every current upload, device or network.

No documented universal control prevents all Facebook Timeline recompression. The achievable goal is to remove avoidable losses before upload and provide a source that degrades gracefully when Facebook creates its derivatives.

If you need to inspect exactly how a public page or posted image renders at a chosen viewport, ScreenshotNeo can capture it through one HTTP request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, so an AI agent using Claude, Cursor or another MCP client can call take_screenshot, get_page_info or capture_pdf. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. The service offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For API parameters and the full option list, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Troubleshooting checklist
The export is sharp, but the posted image is soft everywhere
- Open the largest Facebook view, not only the Timeline card.
- Verify that the upload copy was resized once and sharpened afterward.
- Confirm it was not saved repeatedly as JPEG.
- Retry over Wi‑Fi or a strong mobile signal.
Only colors are wrong
- Convert, rather than assign, the upload copy to sRGB.
- Embed the profile if your exporter supports it.
- Compare the opened Facebook image with the uploaded copy.
Fine text is unreadable
- Increase type size and line thickness before export.
- Avoid one-pixel rules and dense text in a Timeline graphic.
- Inspect at the intended display size; detail that exists only when zoomed may not survive a preview.
The app fails or hangs during upload
- Switch to stable Wi‑Fi or strong mobile data.
- Update or restart the app, refresh Facebook and retry.
- Check that the file opens locally and that the profile photo is at least 320×320 pixels.
FAQ
Does Facebook always reduce resolution?
It creates optimized derivatives and previews, so the version shown in a particular interface can differ from the original. The exact derivative depends on placement and delivery conditions.
Should I upload PNG instead of JPEG?
PNG can help with flat graphics, but it does not exempt an upload from Facebook’s processing. For photographs, a single high-quality JPEG export is usually the practical web copy.
Can a better camera or monitor stop the blur?
Better capture and viewing can improve the source, but neither disables Facebook’s server-side optimization. The export and upload workflow matters more for this specific problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling mobile-data saving preserve the original?
It may change how the app downloads or displays media, but Facebook’s public guidance does not promise that any client setting disables all server-side Timeline recompression.
Why does the same file look different on two devices?
Screens, color management, connection speed and the derivative selected for each interface can differ. Compare the opened image under similar viewing conditions.
