If Snapchat Memories show the date you downloaded them instead of when you took them, the date may be missing from the exported media metadata. Snapchat’s help pages explain how to export Memories but do not explain this date issue. A third-party repair provider, MemoriesExport, says the original capture dates are stored in memories_history.json rather than embedded in each exported photo or video. Its proposed fix uses that file to add dates back to the media. Keep the complete export, including the JSON file, and verify the embedded capture date—not just the file’s Created or Modified timestamp.
Why exported Snapchat Memories can show the wrong date
MemoriesExport attributes the problem to a mismatch between the export’s media files and its metadata: it says photos may have empty EXIF capture-date fields and videos may lack QuickTime creation-date metadata, while the original capture dates remain in memories_history.json. A photo library that cannot find a capture date may instead display a download or import date.
This explanation comes from a third-party repair provider; Snapchat’s export help pages do not confirm it. Treat it as a reported cause, not an official explanation of Snapchat’s export behavior.

Snapchat documents two ways to get Memories: export individual or selected Snaps in the app, or request a Memories archive through My Data. The archive route is the one relevant to the repair workflow described below because it provides the ZIP and the accompanying data file.
#1 Best Overall
- View and edit IIM metadata embedded in images.
- Easy copy-paste metadata between photos.
- Exif info
Export one or more Snaps in the app
- From Snapchat’s Camera screen, swipe up to open Memories.
- Press and hold a Snap. To select more than one, use Snapchat’s multi-select option.
- Tap Export, then choose where to save the selected Snap or Snaps. Snapchat’s support instructions document this in-app route.
Request a Memories-only My Data archive
- Sign in to Snapchat and open My Data.
- Enable Export your Memories, choose Request Only Memories, and select a date range.
- Submit the request. When Snapchat marks the export complete, download the ZIP.
- Extract the ZIP, open
index.html, choose Memories, then download individual Memories or all of them.
Snapchat says it strives to deliver data within seven days, but large downloads can take longer. Its instructions say to double-click the ZIP file to extract a folder. See Snapchat’s My Data download instructions.
Keep the JSON file with the exported media
Do not discard or separate memories_history.json from the export before repairing dates. MemoriesExport says its process reads that file, matches its entries to the exported media, and writes date metadata into the corresponding files. If the JSON file is missing, the provider’s described workflow cannot use it to recover the capture dates.
Rank #2
- Easy to copy metadata from one photo to another.
- Create, edit and apply metadata as a template.
- Basic exif info
For photos, the provider says it writes EXIF DateTimeOriginal and CreateDate. For videos, it describes writing QuickTime creation-date metadata. These are different metadata formats; a photo EXIF check does not verify a video’s QuickTime fields. The details and claimed workflow are described by MemoriesExport.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify a photo’s capture date after repair
Check the embedded capture date rather than relying only on filesystem timestamps. MemoriesExport recommends checking EXIF DateTimeOriginal; in Windows, you can look at Properties → Details → Date taken. A photo library import can also show whether the app recognizes the capture date, though behavior may vary by app.

File-system Created and Modified dates can still reflect when files were downloaded, extracted, or changed. Those timestamps are not by themselves proof that the embedded capture date is still wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the repair may not restore
MemoriesExport reports that the exact ordering of multiple Snaps from the same day may not be recoverable if the export lacks enough information to establish their within-day sequence. The provider’s guide does not establish universal compatibility with every operating system or photo library, so confirm the result in the application where you intend to organize the Memories. See its stated limitation at MemoriesExport.
