European smartphone sales through mobile operators fell 4% year over year in Q2 2026, but open-market sales fell 11%. That relative resilience helped operators gain share of handset sales even as the overall market shrank. It does not mean carriers sold more phones in absolute terms—or that their service revenue or profits increased.
What “benefited carriers” means in this report
Counterpoint Research’s Europe Channel Share Tracker compares smartphone sales through two routes: operators and the open market. In its Q2 2026 comparison, operator-channel sales declined less than open-market sales. The operator channel therefore gained relative share, despite selling fewer smartphones than a year earlier.

These are sales comparisons, not shipment figures. The distinction matters: channel sales describe how handsets performed across sales routes, while shipments measure devices sent into the market.
Why the operator channel held up better
Counterpoint attributes the gap to pressure on lower-end smartphones during a memory-price crisis. Operator sales typically skew more high-end because a greater share of purchases are made on contract; the open market has greater exposure to lower-priced devices. When budget-oriented demand was squeezed, that difference in product mix left operator sales comparatively less exposed.

The accessible report does not quantify the decline in the low-end segment or define a specific price threshold for “budget.” The explanation is a market-mix account, not a claim that every operator or contract handset was insulated from the downturn.
Shipments tell a separate story
In a separate report, Counterpoint’s Smartphone Market Monitor estimated that Europe shipped 35 million smartphones in Q2 2026, down 10% year over year. It described this as the lowest second-quarter shipment total since Q2 2023. These figures should not be substituted for the sales-channel percentages above: the two reports track different measures.

Counterpoint associated the shipment decline with rising component costs, higher final device prices, fewer promotions as manufacturers sought to protect margins, and weaker consumer demand. It also said the difficult macroeconomic climate was exacerbated by the Iran War and resulting inflation. Those are Counterpoint’s explanations for the market conditions, rather than quantified estimates of each factor’s effect. See its Q2 2026 European shipment report, published August 19, 2026.

Operator-channel brands
Apple overtook Samsung to lead Europe’s operator channel in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint. Motorola and vivo were the fastest-growing brands year over year in that channel. The available report excerpt does not provide exact brand shares or growth rates, so those rankings do not establish how large the lead or gains were.

Western and Eastern Europe
Counterpoint said Western Europe performed better than expected, supported by a strong Apple quarter and marginal Samsung growth. Eastern Europe saw a significant decline as budget segments came under pressure and many Chinese phone makers struggled. These regional observations add context to the overall downturn; they do not imply that performance was uniform across individual countries.

What the figures do—and do not—show
- They show relative resilience: operator handset sales declined less than open-market sales, so the operator route gained share in the Q2 2026 sales comparison.
- They do not show absolute growth: operator-channel smartphone sales were down 4% year over year.
