Enfold’s founders say they published the app’s code so parents could inspect its privacy approach and clinicians could examine its sourced baby-health content. But the project does not put everything under one open-source license: its author describes separate terms for software, learning cards, and brand assets, plus an extra rebranding condition for app-store forks.

This account is based on Raul’s September 21, 2026 article on DEV Community. The privacy, technical, and licensing details below are the author’s descriptions, not an independent repository audit or legal opinion.

Why the founders made Enfold’s code public

Raul describes himself as a software developer and his wife, Oana, as a neonatologist. After they became parents, they wanted a baby-tracking app that was quiet at night, easy to use one-handed, and honest about what is normal. They say the alternatives they found included ads, streaks, or a subscription barrier before safety information. They built Enfold and made its code public.

Privacy claims readers can inspect

The author says Enfold includes no advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs. In his account, data stays on the phone when a user does not create an account; account-based syncing sends data over HTTPS to a small FastAPI backend that users can run themselves. He frames the rationale plainly: “A baby tracker holds health data about a child.” Raul’s article on DEV Community is the source for these claims. Public code can make implementation easier to inspect, but the article itself does not establish that the app manifests, sync code, or live network traffic were independently audited.

Making health content easier to scrutinize

Raul says each learning card is a JSON file with a list of sources, and that a test blocks cards without sources from shipping. He also says an Apple review under guideline 1.4.1 prompted the team to improve its citation practice. These are the author’s descriptions; the article does not include the review record or independently demonstrate the test.

What the reported licenses and carve-outs cover

Raul’s article describes different treatment for code, educational cards, and brand assets. It reports AGPL-3.0-or-later for code and CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 for learning cards, while saying the name and specified visual assets are not licensed. It also reports an added condition for app-store forks. The distinctions matter: “Enfold is AGPL” would not accurately describe every material in the project.

Material Terms Raul reports Reuse described in the article Additional project condition reported
Software code AGPL-3.0-or-later The author characterizes it as copyleft and says the network clause means a hosted fork must publish its changes. An app-store fork must first rebrand under the condition described in LICENSE-NOTES.
Learning cards CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 The author says cards should be attributed rather than remixed; he suggests coordinating with the project and a clinician for translation. No separate app-store condition for cards is described.
Name and brand assets Not licensed, according to the author The name, logo, icons, and two illustrations are reserved rather than offered for reuse under the code license. The author says the illustrations are intended to be replaced with original art. The reported app-store rebranding condition also addresses confusion between a fork and Enfold.

Code: AGPL-3.0-or-later

The author describes the code license as copyleft and says its network clause requires a hosted fork to publish its changes. That is Raul’s summary of the reported license, not advice about how the license applies to a particular service or deployment.

Learning cards: CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

The educational cards have a different reported license from the software. Raul says the intent is to allow attribution while preventing commercial reuse and derivative works under that license. He recommends contacting the project and a clinician to coordinate translations rather than treating medical guidance as material to remix casually.

Brand and illustrations: reserved

According to Raul, the Enfold name, logo, icons, and two illustrations are not licensed for reuse. He says the illustrations are meant to be replaced with original artwork, which separates using the code from presenting a fork as the Enfold product.

App-store forks: a reported rebranding covenant

The article says a short addition in LICENSE-NOTES requires an app-store fork to change its name and replace the brand and illustrations first. Raul gives the reason as preventing parents from mistaking a fork for Enfold. This is a project-specific condition as he describes it; its interaction with the underlying license has not been independently assessed here, and this account does not determine enforceability.

What “self-hostable” means in the author’s account

The technical details help explain the transparency goal without proving how a deployed version behaves. Raul reports a Flutter mobile app using Riverpod, go_router, and Drift/SQLite, with offline-first storage and a schema identified as v14. He describes the sync backend as FastAPI, Postgres, and Redis, with magic-code sign-in, partner invites, and push notifications. The deployment tooling he names includes Caddy, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions, and Dependabot. These are publication-time descriptions, not a current technical audit.

The author also reported 208 tests in 2026. That is an author-reported count, not an independently run test result.

Which project-status details are time-sensitive

In the September 21, 2026 article, Raul said per-card physician sign-off was in progress and unsigned cards were marked “Pending physician review.” He described the app as English-only, with Romanian planned next; the UI supported one child per device although the server supported more; and Google Play review was still underway while an App Store version was live. These statements describe the project at publication, not its status today. The author also said the app was free and would stay free.

What to check before reusing Enfold material

The practical starting point is to identify exactly what you want to use. Software, learning cards, and brand assets do not share the same reported terms, and the app-store rebranding condition is an additional project-specific claim. A definitive legal assessment would require reviewing the actual license files and the law that applies to the intended use; Raul’s article alone does not settle how those terms operate in a particular case.
