Elon Musk called it a “Total coincidence!” because the apparent “420” came from the identifiers of two Starship vehicles stacked for a brief fitment test in August 2021: Super Heavy Booster 4 and Starship prototype Ship 20. Musk also commented on the booster’s height, but his post ended before stating a revised measurement.
How Booster 4 and Ship 20 formed “420”
On August 6, 2021, SpaceX stacked Super Heavy Booster 4 and Starship prototype Ship 20 at the launch site. Put the vehicle numbers together—4 and 20—and they read “420,” prompting an online joke. Futurism reported that SpaceX fan Austin Barnard made the connection and Musk replied to it. Futurism’s August 6, 2021 report and Space Explored’s August 8, 2021 account describe the episode.
What Musk said—and what he left unfinished
Musk’s post, as reproduced by both outlets, read: “Total coincidence! Also, booster height was originally 70m, but we eliminated a half barrel for manufacturing efficiency, so now it’s…”

Futurism interpreted the ellipsis as pointing to a height of 69 meters. That figure is the publication’s inference, not a completed measurement stated directly in Musk’s quoted post.

It was a fitment test, not a launch
Space Explored describes the August 6 stacking as a brief fitment test: the prototypes were brought together, then Ship 20 was removed from Booster 4. The episode was a hardware test and a numerical coincidence, not a launch of that stack.
Why the historical context matters
The identifiers refer to those specific prototypes in 2021. This anecdote does not describe Starship’s present-day configuration or status. Both reports reproduce Musk’s post; they are secondary accounts, so his explanation should be treated as his stated response rather than independently verified evidence of intent.
