If your Starlink setup shows a Wi-Fi network named STINKY, it may reflect a default-name change reported in 2022—not a name used by every Starlink router today. Starlink’s Gen 1 setup instructions identify STARLINK as the default, and the company lets non-aviation customers change the network name and password in the Starlink app.

Why some Starlink networks are called STINKY

In a video description published July 21, 2022, the Mobile Internet Resource Center reported that Elon Musk had said in a June tweet that Starlink’s default Wi-Fi name, or SSID, would change to “STINKY.” The description said the name appeared on new routers and after a router factory reset. The original post is not available in the cited material, so the report supports the history of the change but not a verbatim quotation from Musk. Mobile Internet Resource Center’s July 2022 report.

That report does not establish that every Starlink router uses STINKY now. Starlink’s Gen 1 router setup guide identifies STARLINK as the default network name for that model. The guide is specific to the Gen 1 router, which is compatible only with the Standard Circular Starlink Kit. A third-party configuration manual instructs users to look for either STARLINK or STINKY during setup, indicating that the name can vary by documented setup context rather than providing a rule for all current equipment. How to change your Starlink Wi-Fi name and password

For non-aviation customers, Starlink says to change the SSID and password in the Starlink app. Its support guidance is hosted on a Bangladesh locale page; the instructions describe the app setting, not a guarantee that every regional app display uses identical wording. 1. Open the Starlink app and go to the Wi-Fi settings for your network.
  2. Enter the network name you want to use in the SSID field. Starlink allows 4–32 characters.
  3. Set a password separately. Starlink allows 8–32 characters, with additional password rules for Brazil.
  4. Save the changes. Devices currently connected to the network will disconnect; reconnect each device using the new network name and password.

Starlink’s circular-kit installation guide also describes connecting to STARLINK during setup and then optionally choosing a new SSID and password. Starlink Install Guide: Circular Kit.

Changing the name does not secure the network

Starlink says the default network is not password-protected until you create a password. Renaming an open network does not add protection; set a password in the app as part of the same update. Starlink Wi-Fi name and password support.

Do you need another router to get rid of STINKY?

No. Starlink’s app supports changing the SSID, so buying another router is not necessary just to rename the network. If your goal is instead to use a third-party router or mesh system, a third-party Starlink customer guide says an Ethernet Adapter may be needed and that bypass mode disables the built-in Wi-Fi router. Those are setup considerations for replacing or extending the network, not steps required to change its name. Starlink specifications; Third-Party Devices guide.
