If your phone keeps dropping and reconnecting to Wi-Fi, the cause may be the phone, a weak or interfered-with signal, or the router or internet connection. First check whether other devices lose Wi-Fi on the same network, then test your phone on a different Wi-Fi network. Those two comparisons help narrow down where to troubleshoot before you change settings.
First, find out whether the problem is your phone or the network
Check another device connected to the same Wi-Fi. If several devices also disconnect or cannot get online, the router, network setup, or internet service may be involved. If only your phone has trouble, or it disconnects on several different Wi-Fi networks, focus first on the phone and its settings. These are useful clues, not proof of a single cause.
Next, connect your phone to a different Wi-Fi network if one is available. If the phone stays connected there, investigate the original network. If it cannot connect reliably anywhere, device settings or the phone itself are more likely to need attention. Apple recommends this comparison for iPhone and iPad; if an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, Apple advises contacting Apple Support. Apple’s Wi-Fi connection guidance explains the checks.
Check your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and saved network
For iPhone or iPad
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off.
- If Wi-Fi is greyed out, restart the device. Apple also recommends checking Wi-Fi Assist or Connectivity Assist settings where applicable.
- If you use VPN or security software, Apple suggests uninstalling it temporarily, restarting the device, and testing Wi-Fi. If the connection works afterward and you need that software, contact its administrator or provider before reinstalling or changing its configuration.
For Android
Open your device’s Wi-Fi settings, select the affected saved network, forget it, and connect again by entering its password. Android menu names and steps vary by manufacturer and software version. Google’s Android internet connection troubleshooting guide describes forgetting and rejoining a network.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check signal strength and possible interference
Move closer to the router and see whether the connection becomes stable. If it does, weak coverage or interference may be contributing. Try to keep the router in range and reduce obstacles or nearby sources of interference. Apple lists power cables, microwaves, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones among possible sources; its wireless interference guidance describes ways to reduce disruption.
If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band as a diagnostic check. Neither band is universally best: the result depends on the router, distance, and surroundings. Note whether one band is more reliable where you normally use your phone.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Restart and check the router, modem, and internet service
If multiple devices disconnect, or the phone drops only on one Wi-Fi network, check that the router is powered, within range, and using current firmware. For help with firmware or device compatibility, consult the router manufacturer. Restarting the router and modem can refresh the connection; follow the equipment maker’s instructions. Google describes unplugging a router, waiting 30 seconds, and reconnecting it as a common restart approach in its Android connectivity guidance.
If several devices still have trouble or the connection remains unavailable after these checks, contact your internet service provider or the person or organization that manages the Wi-Fi. On a work, school, or other managed network, ask its administrator before changing network configurations.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Reset network settings only after simpler fixes fail
On iPhone or iPad, a network settings reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, along with mobile, VPN, and APN settings. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore settings afterward. Apple recommends this as a later troubleshooting step, not a first move; consult a school or business network administrator before resetting a managed device. See Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps for the current reset instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you consider replacing the router?
Consider router replacement only when the evidence points to the router, such as persistent trouble across multiple devices or coverage that does not reach the places you need. First check placement, firmware, compatibility, and available bands, and ask the router manufacturer or ISP for help where appropriate. A phone repeatedly reconnecting by itself is not enough to establish that you need new hardware.
