If Outlook labels a calendar “This computer only”, that calendar is stored locally in classic Outlook for Windows. It is not a normal server-synchronized calendar folder.
That distinction matters: appointments in the folder may not appear in Outlook on the web, new Outlook, or Outlook on another computer. Reinstalling Outlook, repairing the profile, or switching to new Outlook does not automatically turn the folder into a cloud calendar. You must move or copy the items into a synchronized mailbox calendar, or export them and import them elsewhere.
What “This computer only” means
The suffix identifies the calendar’s storage scope. Outlook is telling you that the folder exists on this Windows computer rather than in a calendar store provided by your mail server.

The folder may still appear beneath an account in Outlook’s folder list, which makes it easy to mistake it for a synchronized calendar. The wording is the important part: a folder ending in “This computer only” is local.

| Calendar type | Where the items are stored | Available on other devices? |
|---|---|---|
| Regular mailbox calendar | On the mail provider’s server | Normally yes, through supported Outlook clients and Outlook on the web |
| Calendar (This computer only) | Locally in classic Outlook on this computer | Not automatically |
Microsoft uses the same naming convention for other local folders, including Contacts (This computer only). Its current migration guidance treats those items as locally saved and requires an export/import process when moving from classic Outlook to new Outlook. The same storage limitation applies to calendar items.
Is the calendar damaged?
Usually, no. The label does not indicate corruption. It means Outlook has no server-backed copy of that folder available to synchronize.
Local calendars can be useful for appointments that should remain on one computer, but they create a problem when you expect the same data to appear on your phone, a second PC, Outlook on the web, or a newly configured Outlook profile.
It also does not mean the appointments are stored in Outlook.com or Microsoft 365. If they were in a synchronized mailbox calendar, Outlook would not need the “This computer only” suffix.
Why the label appears
Common causes include:
- The appointments were created in a local calendar rather than the mailbox calendar.
- An older Outlook profile or account configuration created a local folder.
- The account or connection type does not provide a synchronized calendar store.
- You are moving from classic Outlook to new Outlook, where locally saved items are not automatically transferred.
- The calendar was copied from another local Outlook data store or profile.
The exact cause is less important than the storage location: anything left in that folder remains dependent on the computer where the local Outlook data is available.

How to make the calendar synchronize
There is no checkbox or command-line switch that turns off the “This computer only” label. The storage scope changes only when you place the appointments in a server-synchronized calendar.
Option 1: Move or copy the appointments
- Open the Calendar view in classic Outlook.
- Display the local calendar and the calendar belonging to your synchronized mailbox.
- Select the appointments you need to preserve.
- Use Move or copy and paste to place them in the mailbox calendar—not in another folder with the “This computer only” suffix.
- Wait for Outlook to finish synchronizing.
- Check Outlook on the web or another device before deleting the originals.
Moving recurring appointments, private appointments, attachments, and invitations can have different effects depending on the account and Outlook version. For that reason, verify a sample of each type after the move. Keep the local originals until you have confirmed that the server copy is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOption 2: Export the local data before changing Outlook
If you are replacing classic Outlook, removing an account, or moving to another computer, export the local items first. Microsoft’s documented classic-Outlook export workflow begins here:
- Open classic Outlook.
- Go to File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
- Select Export to a file, then choose Next.
- Choose the export format offered for the data you are transferring and continue.
- In Select folder to export from, scroll to the top of the list and select the folder with the exact “This computer only” suffix.
- Choose Next, select a destination, and finish the wizard.
For contacts, Microsoft specifically documents Comma Separated Values (CSV) as the export format and the folder name Contacts (This computer only). Calendar transfer may instead use a calendar-capable Outlook data export or manually copying the appointments into a synchronized calendar, depending on the Outlook version and destination. Do not assume that exporting contacts proves the calendar has been moved.
The export wizard does not necessarily display a “completed” message. Microsoft says the export begins after you select Finish and is complete when the Import and Export Progress box disappears.

Moving local contacts or other data to new Outlook
Microsoft warns that locally saved contacts from classic Outlook may not copy automatically when moving to new Outlook. The documented contact process is:
- Export the local contacts from classic Outlook as a CSV file.
- Open new Outlook and select People > Import contacts > Browse.
- Choose the CSV file, select Open, and then select Import.
If People is missing from the left navigation bar, select More apps > People. You can optionally right-click People and choose Pin.
CSV encoding can cause a failed or garbled import. Microsoft recommends UTF-8. If names or other text display incorrectly, select Cancel, convert the CSV to UTF-8, and restart the import.
Calendar items should be handled before migration in the same general way: move or copy them into a synchronized mailbox calendar, or preserve them using an appropriate calendar export before removing the old Outlook setup. Switching to new Outlook alone is not a reliable migration method for “This computer only” data.
What happens if you remove the account?
Removing an account does not upload local calendar items. It can make them harder to reach because the folder may belong to the existing classic Outlook profile or local data store.

Before removing an account, confirm that the local calendar has been moved or exported. In classic Outlook, Microsoft’s current account-removal path is:
File > Account Settings > Account Settings
Select the account, choose Remove, and then choose Close. Treat this as an account-configuration action, not a data-migration step.
How to check whether an appointment is synchronized
- In the Calendar list, identify the calendar that contains the appointment.
- Look for the exact “This computer only” suffix.
- If the appointment is in that folder, do not assume it is online simply because the folder is displayed under an account tree.
- After moving or copying it, open the mailbox calendar in Outlook on the web.
- Confirm that the appointment appears there before deleting the local copy.
If it appears only in classic Outlook and not in Outlook on the web, it has not been transferred to a server-synchronized calendar.
What not to do
- Do not reinstall Outlook and expect the calendar to follow. A local folder is not converted into a server folder by reinstalling the application.
- Do not assume new Outlook imports everything automatically. Microsoft specifically documents a separate process for locally saved contacts, and local calendar items also require deliberate transfer.
- Do not delete the local folder immediately after an export. First verify the resulting data in the destination calendar.
- Do not look for a setting to disable the label. There is no documented switch that changes local storage into synchronized storage.
- Do not confuse the account tree with server synchronization. The exact suffix is the useful indicator.
FAQ
Can I remove “This computer only” from the calendar name?
Not as a display setting. The label describes where the folder is stored. Move or copy the appointments into a synchronized mailbox calendar to stop relying on the local folder.

Not automatically. It is stored locally in classic Outlook on that computer. It must be moved or exported and then transferred to a calendar that your phone synchronizes.

Does “This computer only” mean Outlook is corrupted?
No. It normally means the folder has no server-backed copy available for synchronization. It becomes a data-loss risk if you change computers or remove the Outlook profile without transferring the items.
Will switching to new Outlook move the calendar automatically?
You should not rely on that. Microsoft warns that locally saved classic-Outlook data may not copy automatically and provides export/import instructions for local contacts. Transfer local calendar items before switching.
Can I use PowerShell or an outlook.exe switch to convert the folder?
There is no documented command syntax for this conversion. Microsoft’s supported procedure uses Outlook’s interface to move, export, or import the data.

Why are some calendar appointments online while others say “This computer only”?
They are in different calendar folders. Appointments in the mailbox calendar can synchronize, while appointments in the local folder remain on the computer unless you move or copy them.
The Bottom Line
“This computer only” means local storage, not a broken calendar. The appointments are not automatically available in new Outlook, Outlook on the web, another computer, or a phone. Move or copy them into the synchronized calendar for your mailbox, or export them before changing Outlook or removing the account. Confirm the appointments appear online before deleting the local copies.
