A popping sound on a Mac usually comes from one of three places: Bluetooth headphones, the built-in speakers, or the cooling fans. The sound’s location and timing tell you which path to follow. Apple documents static or popping with Bluetooth headphones when an app uses the headphones’ microphone. For built-in speakers, start with volume and output settings. Fan noise is normal cooling behavior during heavy work, but it does not explain every pop. If the sound continues after the checks below, or it sounds mechanical, stop and contact Apple Support.
Identify where the sound comes from
Before you change any setting, decide where you hear the sound and what it seems to follow. The three common paths below are different problems with different first checks.
| Where you hear it | What the sound tends to follow | First check | Apple source (as cited) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth headphones | Apps that use the headphones’ microphone, such as calls, chat, or conferencing | Quit microphone-using apps, then test playback again | Apple Support, “If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac,” published 23 April 2025 |
| Built-in speakers | Audio playback, app volume, and the selected output device | Confirm the output device and volume, and disconnect other audio hardware | Apple Support, “If the internal speakers on your Mac aren’t working” |
| Fans and chassis | Heavy processing, warm surroundings, and blocked vents, rather than audio playback | Move the Mac to a hard, flat surface and clear the vents | Apple Support, “About fans and fan noise in your Apple product” |
Four questions will usually narrow it down:
- Does the pop happen during audio playback, or only during a call or recording?
- Does it happen only when Bluetooth headphones are connected?
- Does it coincide with heavy work, such as video export, large downloads, or a fast-running fan?
- Does it happen at startup, at wake, or when the Mac is moved, and does it occur with no audio at all?
The last case, a pop with no audio involved, is the one that calls for caution. It is covered under escalation below.

Bluetooth headphones: microphone mode can cause popping
Apple’s support article on reduced sound quality with Bluetooth headphones says: “You might also hear static or popping sounds.” The explanation is about mode switching. When an app uses the headphones’ built-in microphone, Bluetooth moves from a higher-quality listening mode to a mode that supports both speaking and listening. That mode reduces audio quality, and the pop is a symptom of the change.

Try these steps in order:
- Quit every app that uses the headphones’ microphone, including conferencing and chat apps. Check menu bar apps and browser tabs too.
- Play audio again, such as a music track or a video, and listen for the pop.
- If the sound continues, open Control Center, select Sound, and choose the Mac’s internal speakers. Then reselect your headphones.
This explanation applies to Bluetooth headphones in a microphone-use situation. It does not show that wired headphones or the built-in speakers pop for the same reason, and it does not establish that every pop with Bluetooth headphones has this cause.
Built-in speakers: check output routing before assuming hardware failure
If the pop comes from the Mac’s own speakers during playback, work through the output settings first. Apple’s page on non-working internal speakers recommends these basic checks. Because that page is about speakers that do not work at all, treat it as a safe starting point rather than a definitive explanation for intermittent popping.

- Check the volume in the app that is playing the sound. Many apps have their own volume control separate from the system volume.
- Disconnect anything else that can carry audio: headphones, external speakers, USB audio devices, and external displays with speakers.
- Open System Settings, select Sound, then choose Output. Select the built-in speakers.
- In the same Output panel, confirm that the output volume is up and that Mute is off.
- Play the same audio again and note whether the pop returns.
Output routing matters because Apple lists several possible outputs: the Mac’s internal speakers, connected devices, USB speakers, and AirPlay devices. If audio is still routed to a device you no longer use, the pop may come from that device rather than the Mac. Select the output you intend to use, then test again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFans and cooling: normal noise, but not an explanation for every pop
Apple explains that fans respond to internal temperature. They run faster during processor-intensive work such as video compression, graphics-heavy games, or Spotlight indexing after a migration. Warm surroundings and blocked vents can also increase fan activity. Apple describes the resulting rushing-air sound as “a normal part of the cooling process.”

That description covers airflow noise. It does not say that popping is normal fan behavior. If the sound seems to come from the case, consider the following:
- Place the Mac on a hard, flat surface so the vents can draw air.
- Keep the vents clear of dust, bedding, and papers.
- Note whether the sound rises during demanding work. You can see which apps are using the processor in Activity Monitor.
Apple’s fan guidance is different for Intel-based Macs and Apple silicon Macs when a fan runs unexpectedly fast. To find which type you have, choose Apple menu, then About This Mac. Intel-based Macs list a processor, while Apple silicon Macs list a chip. Establish the type before following any reset-type step, because the steps differ.

When to stop and get service
A popping sound does not by itself show that a Mac is safe or failing. Escalate in these situations:
- The internal speaker problem continues after the output checks above. Apple advises arranging service in that case.
- The sound is a distinct mechanical pop, or it occurs with no audio playing.
- You notice a burning smell, severe heat, or liquid exposure.
In these cases, the cited Apple pages do not establish a cause or a safe repair. Do not open the Mac yourself. Contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider.

Repair documentation is specific to each model. Apple’s repair manual for the MacBook Air (M2, 2022), published 8 April 2025, lists sound troubleshooting and separate speaker, fan, and audio-board procedures. Those procedures apply to that model only. They do not describe the parts or steps for other Macs.
What to tell Apple Support
- The Mac model and, where known, whether it has an Intel processor or an Apple silicon chip
- Where you hear the sound: Bluetooth headphones, built-in speakers, or the case
- Whether it happens during playback, calls, heavy work, startup, or wake
- Which output device was selected and whether the sound persisted after the checks above
Those details let support recommend the right next step without guessing which component is involved.
