A Fire Tablet that keeps dropping Wi-Fi usually has one of three causes: weak signal or interference, a problem with the home network, or Smart Suspend, Amazon’s power-saving feature that disconnects the tablet when it is not in use. A smartphone hotspot test is the fastest way to tell these apart. Amazon’s official troubleshooting guidance says that if the tablet works on a hotspot, the issue is with your network, not the tablet.
Start with the basic checks
Before changing any settings, confirm the following on the tablet and on one other device in the same home:
- Airplane mode is off. A tablet in Airplane mode cannot join any Wi-Fi network.
- The correct network is selected and the password is entered correctly. If you use more than one network name, such as a guest network, confirm the tablet is on the main one.
- Other devices are affected too. If a phone, laptop, or smart TV also drops or cannot get online, the problem is more likely the router or your internet service than the tablet.
- Distance from the router. Move the tablet closer and see whether the drops stop. Repeated disconnects at the far end of the house point toward signal strength.
Reduce interference and competing traffic
Amazon’s guidance names microwave ovens, baby monitors, and other wireless devices as sources of interference, and advises moving the tablet away from them. Temporarily disconnecting other devices that are heavily streaming or downloading can also free up bandwidth, which helps show whether congestion is involved.

- Reconnect the tablet to the Wi-Fi network and watch whether the connection holds over the next hour or so.
Use a smartphone hotspot to split the problem
A hotspot test separates a home-network problem from a tablet problem. Turn on the hotspot on a nearby phone, connect the Fire Tablet to it, and leave the tablet on for a while. Then compare the result with the home network.
| What you see | What it points to | Where to go next |
|---|---|---|
| Stays connected on the hotspot, drops on home Wi-Fi | The home network. Amazon’s guidance says the issue is with the network, not the tablet. | Check distance and interference, restart the modem and router, then check the router’s configuration. |
| Drops on the hotspot as well | A tablet-side cause is more likely. Amazon’s guidance does not explicitly state this direction; it is a reasonable inference from the same test. | Reset network settings, check for software updates, then contact Amazon support. |
| Drops only when the screen has been idle | Smart Suspend, not the network | Check or adjust Smart Suspend settings (see below). |
A successful hotspot test narrows the search to the home network, but it does not identify which component, such as the router, modem, or cabling, is at fault.

Check Smart Suspend when drops happen during idle time
Smart Suspend is a power-saving feature that Amazon says can disconnect a Fire Tablet from the network when the tablet is not in use. If the connection fails mainly after the tablet has been left alone, turn Smart Suspend off or review its schedule. Look for it in the Settings menu. Its exact location and wording vary by tablet model and Fire OS version, so use the search option in Settings if the label is not where you expect it.
Reset network settings
If the earlier steps do not help, reset the tablet’s network settings from Settings. Look for a network reset option, confirm the action, and then reconnect. A network reset clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, so have your Wi-Fi password ready before you start. Menu labels can differ by model and Fire OS version.

When the router or home network is the likely cause
Consider the router only after the hotspot test points to the home network and the network-side steps have not resolved the drops. Amazon’s guidance does not say that a router typically needs replacing, so a router should not be treated as a standard fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMulti-band and mesh networks
If your router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, or you use extenders or a mesh system, Amazon says these must share the same network name, security type, and password for Wi-Fi roaming to work. A mismatch can be one possible cause of trouble when moving between rooms, but test before assuming it is the problem. Changing the settings is a reasonable check, not a confirmed diagnosis.
What is and is not established
Amazon’s official support guidance covers the steps above, but it does not report how often each cause occurs, and it does not offer a single fix that works for every household. Steps and menu names can also differ between Fire Tablet models and software versions, so confirm the exact wording on your own device before following a specific path.
