A face usually looks older in a photo because of how the picture was taken, not because the face has changed. The best-documented cause is camera distance: when the lens is very close, the features nearest the camera are recorded at a larger scale than those farther back, which shifts apparent facial proportions. Viewing distance and the fact that a photo freezes a single moment add to the effect. One unflattering picture is not evidence of premature aging.

How camera distance changes facial proportions

A camera records one viewpoint. When it sits only a few inches from your face, the nose and central midface sit noticeably closer to the lens than the ears, the sides of the face, and the background, so they are drawn larger relative to everything else. Clinical photographers have flagged this problem for years. A 2015 overview of smartphone photography in dermatology, published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, cautions that taking a camera too close can distort facial photographs (Clinical photography in dermatology using smartphones: An overview).

What one 2024 study measured

The most specific measurement comes from Derakhshan and colleagues, published in The Laryngoscope in 2024 and indexed by PubMed (Quantifying Facial Distortion in Modern Digital Photography). In a study of 12 subjects, close photographs taken at 8 inches with 24, 35, and 50 mm focal lengths showed a 12%–19% increase in vertical midface stretching compared with a full-frame photograph taken at 60 inches. Read that figure as the result of this specific setup: twelve people, three focal lengths, one close distance, and one comparison distance. It is not a general amount of distortion that every selfie produces on every face.

Focal length matters mainly because it changes how close you have to stand to fill the frame. A lens label on its own does not tell you the shooting distance, and the shooting distance is what drives the effect.

Why the same face looks different in a photo than in a mirror

A mirror shows you a moving, three-dimensional view at a distance your brain has learned to correct for. A photo is flat and fixed, and it is viewed at whatever size and distance the screen or print happens to be. A 2018 study by Cooper and Banks in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, titled “Perceived Facial Distortions in Selfies Are Explained by Viewing Habits,” reports that viewing distance affects how facial dimensions are perceived (the Cooper and Banks paper).

A 2012 review in Perception, “The perceptual basis of common photographic practice,” discusses how perspective and depth cues in an image shape what viewers see (the review). It is useful background for a simple point: a picture is an interpretation of space, not a faithful copy of it.

What a single frame cannot show

A photograph captures one instant. In conversation your face moves through many expressions, and a single frame may catch a half-blink, a held smile, or a jaw set in a way you rarely hold. The sources reviewed here do not measure how much expression changes perceived age, so treat this as a plausible contributor rather than a proven mechanism.

Light direction determines which contours and shadows show up on the face, and that can change how a face reads. The sources do not measure an effect of lighting on perceived age, so treat lighting as a variable to test, not as a cause.

Run a simple distance test

Before deciding that a picture is unflattering, compare it with a second photo taken under controlled conditions. The University of Washington’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Diagnostic and Prevention Network guide, “How to prevent your camera from taking distorted facial photographs,” demonstrates how moving the camera closer increases facial distortion (the UW guide). That makes it a good template for a fair test:

  1. Move the camera several feet away instead of holding it close to your face. Use a helper, or prop the phone on a stable surface. A smartphone tripod with a remote shutter is one optional way to do this; the sources do not test or endorse any particular product.
  2. Keep the lens at roughly eye level so you are not shooting up at or down on your face.
  3. Frame both shots the same way: the same crop of head and shoulders, and the same background.
  4. Use soft, even light, such as a window in front of you, and keep your expression relaxed.
  5. View both photos at the same size, on the same screen, from a normal distance. Compare the close selfie with the farther portrait.

If the two photos differ mainly in the nose and midface relative to the ears, camera distance is the likely cause. If they look similar and the difference only shows up in one frame, expression or timing is more plausible.

Camera distance Shoot from several feet away instead of a few inches Close shooting enlarges nearer features; the 2024 Laryngoscope study reported a 12%–19% increase in vertical midface stretching at 8 inches compared with 60 inches The distortion any individual will see in their own photo

Focal length Step back and use a longer focal length to fill the frame Focal length influences how close a person stands to fill the frame Not stated in the cited sources: that focal length alone changes facial shape
Lighting direction Use soft, even light Light affects which contours and shadows are visible Not stated in the cited sources: any measured effect on perceived age
Expression Take several frames with a relaxed face A photo captures a single moment Not stated in the cited sources: how much expression changes perceived age
Viewing size and distance Compare both photos at the same size and a normal distance Viewing distance affects perceived facial dimensions (Cooper and Banks, 2018) Not stated in the cited sources: a universal viewing distance that avoids distortion

When one photo is not enough evidence

  • A single picture, especially one taken very close, cannot show whether someone has aged faster than usual.
  • If the difference appears in several portraits taken at a normal distance and in ordinary light, it is worth looking at more closely. Comparing a set of photos over time is more informative than judging one frame.
  • The cited sources study photography and perception. They do not assess skin, health, or treatments. If you have a specific concern about how your face has changed, a clinician is the right person to ask.
