If your Chromebook’s clock resets after shutdown, first connect it to the internet and check its time-zone setting. ChromeOS automatically sets the time online, so an incorrect clock can be caused by missing synchronization or a wrong time zone—not just a hardware fault. If it repeatedly loses time while powered off, the real-time clock (RTC) may be losing its backup power, but that does not prove your model has a failed, replaceable coin-cell battery.
What keeps a Chromebook’s clock running while it is off?
A Chromebook uses a hardware real-time clock (RTC) to maintain time while the rest of the system is shut down. ChromiumOS documentation says the RTC remains powered while the device is off, but the backup-power design varies: some devices use a dedicated battery, while others rely on the main laptop battery. On some designs, recovery procedures can also reset the RTC. See ChromiumOS timekeeping documentation.
That variation matters when diagnosing a recurring reset. A clock that loses time while the Chromebook is off can be consistent with loss of RTC backup power, but it does not identify the cause or prove that a standard, user-replaceable coin cell has failed. Without the exact Chromebook model, you cannot determine its RTC power arrangement or the right service procedure.

Why might the clock be wrong even if the RTC is working?
When a Chromebook connects to the internet, it automatically sets the time. If the displayed time is wrong, first consider whether the device has synchronized and whether its time zone is correct. Google’s instructions explain how to select a time zone manually or let Wi-Fi or mobile networks help determine it: Set the date, time and find your calendar.

What to check before seeking a repair
- Connect to the internet. Let the Chromebook go online and see whether the time corrects itself. If it does, the immediate problem may have been a lack of synchronization.
- Check the time zone. Open Settings, then go to the date and time settings. Confirm the selected zone, or review whether automatic time-zone selection using network location is appropriate for your situation. Google’s time and calendar instructions describe the available controls.
- Run relevant Diagnostics checks if the issue persists. The ChromeOS Diagnostics app can report battery health and cycle count, assess charge and discharge behavior, and test connectivity, including a Google Services connectivity scan. These results can help identify battery or network concerns, but they do not by themselves prove an RTC fault. See Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your issue.
- Restart and follow basic, model-appropriate troubleshooting. Test the clock again after each step. A hardware reset is a separate troubleshooting action, not a routine fix for every clock problem; Google recommends trying it only after other troubleshooting has failed, and procedures vary by model. See Reset your Chromebook hardware and Fix hardware and system problems.
- Contact the Chromebook manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if it keeps resetting. Give them the exact model and describe whether the time corrects itself after connecting to the internet, then resets again after shutdown. Google’s general guidance says to contact the manufacturer if the recommended troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem: Fix hardware and system problems.
Should you replace a battery or recover the Chromebook?
Do not buy a generic RTC or “CMOS” battery based on the symptom alone. Chromebook RTC backup designs differ, and the available information does not establish which part—if any—is separately replaceable in your model. Confirm the design and service instructions for the exact Chromebook before ordering a part or opening the device.
Recovery is also not a first-line clock repair. Recovering a Chromebook reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local files, so use less invasive checks first. If recovery is eventually needed for a broader system problem, back up local files beforehand and follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.
