Modern phones have thinner bezels to put more display on the front without making the whole phone proportionally larger. That can make video, games and other content feel more immersive, but it also leaves less physical border to help you hold the phone without touching the screen. The trade-off is most noticeable in one-handed use, where phone width, grip and edge-touch handling matter alongside screen size.
Why do phones have thinner bezels?
A bezel is the border between a phone’s display and its outer edge. Reducing that border lets the screen occupy a larger share of the front face. Manufacturers can therefore offer a broad viewing area in a body that is more compact than a phone with the same-sized screen and wider borders.
Samsung described this goal in its 2017 Galaxy S8 design account: the company said it minimized the top and bottom bezels and removed the side bezels to create a compact, immersive display. It also described moving display-driver components and adjusting antennas to make room for the screen while retaining functionality. These are the manufacturer’s design aims for that phone, not proof that every buyer prefers a nearly borderless design. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 design account also notes that defining the image boundary on a curved screen presented a design challenge.

Are bezel-less phones harder to hold?
They can be, depending on the phone and the task. A physical border gives fingers and palms somewhere to rest without being directly over active display. With less border, the hand may overlap the touch surface, and a wider phone can make one-handed tapping more difficult.

A 2018 study in Applied Ergonomics examined one-handed tapping with phones of four widths—67, 70, 72 and 74 mm—and five bottom-bezel sizes—2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 mm. The study reported that increasing phone width and decreasing bottom bezel led to difficulties in touch behavior. These are dimensions tested in that experiment, not recommended limits or a universal measure of how all people will fare. The study does not establish that every thin-bezel phone causes problems, or quantify a population-wide effect. Read the Applied Ergonomics study.
Do thin bezels cause accidental touches?
They can make edge-touch handling more consequential: when more of the front is active display, a finger or palm resting near the edge may register input. How often this happens depends on the phone’s hardware and software, the way it is held, and the app’s layout. The available study supports concern about touch behavior under its tested conditions, but it does not provide a general accidental-touch rate for modern phones.

Software can help distinguish intentional taps from a resting grip, but it is not a universal fix. Samsung’s One UI guidance describes reject zones that block unwanted input and grip zones intended to block palm or three-finger touches while holding a device. For apps, Samsung recommends margins of at least 24 dp on both the left and right sides to avoid conflicts with curved edges or corners. That is guidance for One UI and its design context, not a rule that applies to every phone or app. See Samsung’s One UI layout guidance.
What does “thin bezel” mean in practice?
It can describe several different ways of reducing the visible border or interruption around the display. They are not interchangeable: a camera cutout remains visible, a curved screen changes how the image meets the edge, and an under-display camera places the camera behind the screen.

- Minimized border: The display extends closer to the phone’s outer edges, while the frame and components still need space.
- Curved display: The image can appear to wrap toward the sides, but the edge geometry can make interface placement more sensitive. Samsung’s One UI margin advice specifically addresses curved edges and corners.
- Camera cutout: A camera opening interrupts the display area even when the surrounding bezels are narrow.
- Under-panel camera: Samsung Display describes its technology as a way to eliminate visible camera notches and bezels and increase viewable area. The company also says changes to the display stack improve light transmission to the camera. How to judge the trade-off when choosing a phone
Screen-to-body appearance alone does not tell you whether a phone will feel comfortable or easy to use. Consider the external dimensions and how you use the phone, not just the screen size or bezel width.
- Width and reach: A wider phone can make one-handed tapping harder. Think about whether you often need to reach controls near the far side of the screen.
- Grip and active edges: Notice where your fingers and palm naturally rest, and whether edge touches interrupt typing, navigation or other tasks.
- Usable display area: Check how the camera and sensors are accommodated, and whether a cutout or curved edge affects the content you care about.
- Design and task: A large viewing area may suit video or games, while frequent one-handed operation may make width and reach more important.
The practical question is not simply how much screen fits on the front. It is whether the added viewing area works for your hand, grip and everyday tasks. A thin bezel can make a phone feel more immersive, but it does not by itself make a device thinner or lighter, nor guarantee a better experience for every user.
