DJs choose a MacBook Pro mainly because it runs the major DJ applications, including Serato DJ Pro and rekordbox, and has enough processing capacity for demanding real-time audio work. It is a compatible option, though, not a requirement. Serato also runs on Windows, and the laptop matters less than whether your software version, operating system, controller, and workload work together.
What the software vendors require
Serato publishes system requirements for both macOS and Windows. rekordbox lists supported versions for both Windows and macOS. Neither vendor makes a MacBook Pro mandatory, so the platform choice comes down to fit rather than brand.
The rekordbox download page showed version 7.2.19, dated 24 September 2026, when this article was prepared. Its listed macOS requirements were:
- macOS Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, or Ventura 13
- An Apple M1-series or later CPU
- 8 GB or more of memory
Requirements change with each software release, so the vendor’s current page is the reference point for any purchase.

Ordinary use and demanding performance are different workloads
Serato separates two tiers. Its recommended tier suits typical DJ setups. Its high-performance tier is aimed at demanding tasks: low-latency scratching, live streaming, three or more decks, and Serato Video. Choose a laptop for the heaviest task you actually run, not the most ambitious one you might attempt.
- Two decks, standard latency, no streaming: the recommended tier applies.
- Low-latency scratching: the high-performance tier applies, and the trade-off described below becomes important.
- Live streaming, three or more decks, or Serato Video: plan for the high-performance tier and test the full setup before a gig.

“Serato DJ Pro & Lite are both demanding real-time audio applications and using your computer’s battery while DJing can cause macOS to throttle your computer’s processing power in order to conserve battery, this can adversely affect Serato software and cause audio drop-outs, distortion, or freezes & hangs.”

The attribution is to Serato’s guidance rather than an individual speaker. rekordbox’s download page likewise advises laptop users to run on external AC power for best performance. Treat these as operating guidance. They are not a guarantee that any single step removes every fault. In practice, that means plugging in the laptop for every set and not relying on battery power to get through a gig.

Latency is a trade-off, not a free upgrade
Serato says that lowering latency tightens the response between hardware and software, which can help with scratching. The cost is higher computer load and a greater chance of audio dropouts on lower-spec computers. A setup that feels more responsive on an underpowered laptop may simply fail more often. Raise the latency setting if dropouts appear, and move to a higher-spec machine if you need the low setting.
Ports and controller connections
A laptop’s ports may not match every controller or secondary device. Serato notes that USB-C-only MacBook Pro models may need an adapter or hub, and it recommends official Apple USB-C adapters or hubs for use with Serato. Its hub guidance also describes an externally powered USB 3.0 hub for secondary devices. Count the ports your controller and extra devices need before choosing a model, because a shortfall is solved with accessories that add cost and cable clutter.

A narrow compatibility caveat: some Touch Bar models
Serato’s known-issue article describes connection problems on certain MacBook Pro models with a Touch Bar. The problem appears when they are used with Serato primary hardware that is not class compliant and needs specific manufacturer drivers. Serato reports it could reproduce the issue with other audio software and believes it is specific to those laptops. This is a narrow compatibility issue. It does not show that current MacBook Pro models are less reliable, and it should not be read as a platform-wide verdict. If you own a Touch Bar model and use non-class-compliant primary hardware, read that article before you buy or upgrade.

What the evidence does not establish
Public discussion often frames the question as why DJs choose a MacBook over anything else. The vendor material supports a narrower answer. It shows that a MacBook Pro can meet the current requirements of major DJ software and that some DJs choose it for a familiar, compatible platform with performance headroom. It does not show that a MacBook Pro is necessary, that Macs are categorically more reliable, or that a MacBook Pro beats every comparable Windows laptop. No platform-share figure or direct reliability comparison was identified in the vendor sources reviewed, so none should be assumed.

Setup checklist before you buy
- Confirm the exact DJ software version you run and its current macOS or Windows requirements on the vendor’s download or requirements page.
- Name your heaviest workload, such as low-latency scratching, streaming, video, or three or more decks, and match it to the correct performance tier.
- Check that the laptop’s processor and memory meet the current listed minimums, with headroom for the work you plan.
- List every controller and secondary device, then confirm the laptop has the ports or an official adapter or powered hub to connect them.
- If you own a Touch Bar model, check the known-issue article against your primary hardware.
- Plan to run on external power for every set and test the full setup, including latency settings, before a live performance.
