Preparing every version for the same launch can also affect a game’s scope, schedule, and budget. The reason varies by title: some games launch on PC and console together, and there is no single industry-wide rule.
Why a publisher may delay a PC release
To make the console the launch destination
A publisher may use a console-first window to make that platform more appealing to players who want a game at launch. In a June 2021 PlayStation interview, then-head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst said PlayStation would remain the best place to play its studios’ games at launch, while the company considered the right time for each PC release. He also said PC releases could introduce new players to PlayStation stories and characters.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida later described timed exclusivity as attractive to console players who want first access. He said he did not know the company’s current internal reasoning. His comments, reported by GamesRadar+ in 2026, are a former executive’s perspective, not an official explanation for every release gap.
To reach PC players—and potentially support a franchise
A later port can expand a game’s audience beyond console owners. In May 2024, GameSpot reported that Hulst saw PC releases of single-player games as a way to introduce players to Sony’s franchises and hoped some might consider buying a PlayStation to play a sequel. That is a strategic hope, not evidence that PC ports reliably convert players into console customers.

Because PC development may be scheduled later
Sometimes the console version is simply further along first. In a 2012 account reproducing a Capcom Ask Capcom answer, Capcom executive Christian Svensson said PC development often began when console development was finished or nearly finished. He explained that holding a completed console game until PC work was done could conflict with business planning. He also noted Capcom had achieved simultaneous releases for some games. This is a company-specific explanation from 2012, not proof of how studios generally schedule PC work today. Gameranx published the account.
Because simultaneous development changes scope and spending
Preparing all versions for the same launch can require content and resources earlier. In a Bandai Namco Studios interview, Katsuhiro Harada and Kohei Ikeda described earlier Tekken releases as arcade-first, with content added before home-console ports. For Tekken 8, the team instead aimed for a worldwide simultaneous console and PC release, which meant building the necessary content from the outset. Harada said the change affected how the budget was allocated.

In that interview, Ikeda said previous arcade-to-console ports had taken about three years. Harada compared the cost of Tekken 7’s arcade version with Tekken 8’s development cost, describing the former as about 10% of the latter. These figures describe that team’s specific development history, not a general industry cost ratio. The interview also cited Tekken 7 sales of 12 million copies; that is a Tekken 7 figure, not Tekken 8 sales.
To expand a game’s community or business later
A later release on another platform can be a portfolio decision, especially for an older game. In a 2024 official Xbox podcast transcript, Phil Spencer said Microsoft had selected four games more than a year old for release on other consoles. He cited community-driven games that could benefit from more players and continued franchise investment, as well as smaller games that might find additional business value after reaching their potential on Xbox and PC. Those comments applied to the selected games, not to every Xbox title.

Why the answer differs by game
Timing can reflect a publisher’s platform strategy, the order in which versions are developed, the amount of content required for a simultaneous launch, or the audience a game is meant to serve. The game type may matter too: 2024 reporting distinguished live-service games, which can benefit from players joining together across platforms, from single-player releases that may be used to introduce people to a console franchise. That account described PlayStation’s strategy at the time; it is not a lasting promise about future release schedules.
When looking at a particular game, distinguish what is confirmed from what is merely plausible:

- Publisher strategy: Has the publisher said it wants the console version to be the launch showcase or plans to use a later PC release to reach another audience?
- Production sequence: Is there a direct statement that PC development began after console work was nearly complete?
- Scope and budget: Did the developer explain that preparing all platforms together changed the schedule, content, or spending?
- Specific technical or contractual cause: Is there title-specific evidence for a porting problem, certification delay, exclusivity agreement, or payment? Without that evidence, those are possibilities, not established explanations.
There is no universal PC-release delay
Some games arrive on PC after their console debut; others launch on both at once. The examples above show different reasons for different release plans, not a single industry rule. The sources cited here do not establish a dependable average delay or how often strategy, scheduling, or other factors cause a later PC launch.
