Blurry Osmo Action 6 footage can come from motion during exposure, low light, stabilization, a subject that is too close, or the way image processing renders detail. There is no single setting that fixes every case. Compare short clips in brighter light, adjust shutter speed and ISO in PRO mode, test stabilization on and off, check your subject distance, and review the original recording.

First identify what kind of blur you see

Watch a short clip and note when and where softness appears. Motion blur usually smears moving subjects or the scene as the camera moves. Focus softness may leave a close subject blurred while more distant areas look clearer. Low-light footage can lose detail or look noisy, while stabilization artifacts may make moving footage look less clean. Sharpening or noise reduction can also change how detail appears, even in a stationary scene.

  • Smear during movement: test shutter speed and compare stabilization settings.
  • Close subject soft, background clearer: check the camera’s minimum focus distance and aperture mode.
  • Mostly dim footage looks soft: add light and compare exposure and stabilization.
  • Stationary detail looks processed: inspect the original file and compare it on another screen or player.

Individual users have described Action 6 footage as “so blurred and very poor” or “slightly out of focus,” but those reports are personal descriptions, not evidence that a widespread defect exists.

Test motion blur with shutter speed and ISO

A faster shutter reduces the time each frame is exposed, which can make moving subjects look less smeared. It also lets in less light, so a faster shutter may make footage darker or noisier if the scene is dim. Treat it as a controlled test, not a universal preset.

  1. On the camera, open Image/Audio Settings and enable PRO mode.
  2. Set Exposure to M.
  3. Record a brief clip of the same moving subject at a faster shutter speed, preferably in brighter light. Keep the scene and camera movement as similar as possible.
  4. Compare it with the original. If the faster-shutter clip is darker, add scene lighting or make a deliberate ISO adjustment rather than assuming the faster shutter is cost-free.

DJI’s general low-light guidance recommends increasing environmental brightness and suggests testing with EIS disabled if image quality is unsatisfactory. Its shutter-speed examples name the Action 5 Pro, Action 4, Action 3, Action 2, and original Osmo Action—not the Action 6—so those figures should not be treated as Action 6 settings.

Compare stabilization on and off

The Action 6 manual lists EIS Off, RockSteady, RockSteady+, HorizonBalancing, and HorizonSteady. Record the same scene with EIS off and with a stabilization mode appropriate to your recording mode and frame rate. Check the manual’s supported modes and frame rates for Horizon options; they are not available in every combination.

RockSteady+ crops slightly more of the image edges than RockSteady to provide stronger stabilization. DJI’s FAQ explains that RockSteady 3.0 works by increasing shutter speed, analyzing images from the CMOS sensor, and compensating by cutting off their edges. Stabilization cannot remove motion blur that was already captured during exposure. If an EIS-off clip looks sharper but shakier, compare the same scene in better light and consider whether movement or exposure is contributing to the result.

Aperture mode Minimum focus distance
Fixed f/2.8 35 cm
Starburst f/4.0 20 cm

If your subject is closer than the applicable minimum, moving the camera back is the simplest test. These are aperture modes with different minimum distances, not a general manual-focus control.

DJI documents an Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens for close-up work. With the lens attached, use Focus Peaking to see what is in focus. DJI says the camera’s in-device Focus Peaking is available only in Video mode at frame rates up to 30 fps. Check DJI’s Action 6 specifications and FAQ for current compatibility details.

Use a controlled comparison to isolate the cause

Change one factor at a time, keeping the subject, scene, and camera position as consistent as possible. A bright, stationary scene is a useful baseline; then introduce movement or lower light to see when softness appears.

  • Movement and light: compare a stationary, bright scene with the moving or dim scene that looks soft.
  • Exposure: compare the original recording with a manual shutter-and-ISO test.
  • Stabilization: compare EIS off with an appropriate enabled mode.
  • Distance: compare normal subject distance with the close-up distance and aperture mode you used.
  • Image character: distinguish visible motion or focus softness from noise reduction or sharpening appearance.

DJI’s official materials explain the relevant camera controls, but do not provide a formal Action 6 blur troubleshooting decision tree or establish a universal fix.

Check playback and firmware before suspecting hardware

  1. Review the original file on another screen or in another player to rule out a playback-specific appearance.
  2. Connect the camera to DJI Mimo and follow any firmware update prompt it offers. DJI documents this update process, but the available materials do not identify a general blur-specific firmware fix.
  3. Make a new controlled clip in good light with a stationary subject and ordinary shooting distance.
  4. If that clip remains consistently soft, contact DJI Support and provide sample footage plus the camera settings used. Symptoms alone do not confirm a hardware defect.
