A PlayStation that turns off on its own usually has one of four explanations: it went into rest mode after a period of inactivity, it overheated, a power or cable connection was interrupted, or a software or hardware fault forced it off. Which one applies depends on the console model, when the shutdown happened, what the indicator light did, and any message shown at the next startup. Official PlayStation guidance does not identify a specific cause from a description alone, but it does give a clear order of checks that rules out the simple causes first.
First, confirm the console was actually off
Rest mode can look like a shutdown. On PS5 and PS4, the console can enter rest mode automatically after inactivity. The indicator is the quickest way to tell the difference:
- Solid orange: the console is in rest mode, not fully powered off.
- A white pulse followed by the light going out: the console is powering off.
If the console went quiet and the light stayed orange, check the automatic timer. On PS5, look for Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. On PS4, look for Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off. Both settings are described on PlayStation’s power-saving settings page. If the timer is set to a short interval and the console went off after you stepped away, the timer is the likely explanation. A shutdown during active gameplay is less likely to be explained by a timer.
Match the timing and the light to the right path
PlayStation’s PS5 power guide separates shutdowns by when they happen. Use the table to find the closest pattern, then follow the matching section of the official guide.

These patterns narrow the search. They do not, by themselves, identify a failed internal part.
Check heat and airflow
PlayStation’s indicator guidance ties a pulsing red light on PS4 to overheating. Its suggested first steps are:
- Turn the console off and wait for the indicator to go out.
- Let the console cool.
- Move it to a well-ventilated location, not an enclosed cabinet or a spot against a wall.
- Check the vents for dust or blockage, and clear anything you find.
This guidance is stated for PS4’s pulsing red light. This article does not assume the same light pattern means the same thing on PS5. If a PS5 shuts off during play, improved airflow is still a reasonable, low-risk check, but the official PS5 guide is the reference for PS5 symptoms.

The PS4 steps are also in PlayStation’s Japanese-language PS4 power troubleshooting page, which covers the same ventilation and overheating checks for a console that will not power on.
Test the cable and the power connection
PlayStation’s Safe Mode troubleshooting page says that if Safe Mode will not launch, the USB, HDMI, or power cable may be the problem. It recommends trying a different cable and checking Safe Mode after each change. That is a specific, official reason to test a cable. It does not show that a cable explains every unexpected shutdown.

- Turn the console off and wait until the indicator goes out. Do not pull the power cable while the light is lit or blinking (see the warning below).
- Remove the power cable from the console and leave it unplugged for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Try turning the console on again.
If you replace a cable, confirm the exact console model and connector first. A replacement that does not match the console’s connector will not solve the problem.

Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking.

PlayStation says doing so may cause data loss, corruption, or damage to the console. Use the official page for the full, locale-specific wording.
Safe Mode offers basic functions and troubleshooting options, and some of those options erase data. PlayStation advises backing up to a USB drive or Cloud Storage before selecting them. Treat any option that erases data as a later step, after the checks above have been tried.

If the console keeps shutting off after the checks above, PlayStation directs users with PS5 power symptoms to its Repairs diagnostic tool. The tool provides troubleshooting steps and lets you check repair eligibility. Use the official support route for your console and region. Eligibility and repair outcomes depend on the console’s condition and location, so do not assume a particular result before you start.

Whether a particular part has failed, and whether a repair is practical at home, cannot be established from a description alone. Diagnosis needs the console model, the exact behavior, the indicator pattern, any error messages, and further testing through official support.
When you contact support, note the console model, when the shutdowns happen (idle, at startup, or during play), the indicator color or pattern, whether the console is in a ventilated spot, and which cable you tested. Those details let support route you to the correct section rather than starting from scratch.
