Blizzard says it chose the new Skyborne race for World of Warcraft: Forever because elves are popular with players and because the developers wanted a new way to tell a story rooted in Shen’dralas and the history of Eldre’thalas, later known as Dire Maul. That explains the appeal of Skyborne; it does not amount to a direct, comprehensive explanation of why Blizzard passed on playable High Elves or Blood Elves.

Why did Blizzard choose Skyborne?

In a September 13, 2026, interview with Windows Central, Lead Classic Designer Tim Jones gave two reasons: elves are an appealing character choice, and Blizzard had a story it wanted to tell through the race. Jones said, “We know that being an elf is extremely popular,” and later added, “We knew players were going to enjoy it. We have a really cool story to tell about it … so why not?”

Jones also recalled that adding Blood Elves to the Horde changed faction balance: he described a prior split of 60% Alliance and 40% Horde as having “actually flipped to 60% Horde.” That is Jones’s account in the interview, not an independently audited population statistic; the interview provides no dataset, measurement period, or methodology. It illustrates the design impact Blizzard associates with an elf option, but should not be treated as a current or verified player-population measure.

What story does Skyborne let Blizzard tell?

Principal Designer Kris Zierhut framed the race as a narrative opportunity. In the same interview, he said, “There are stories that we want to tell here,” and connected Shen’dralas to a deeper exploration of Eldre’thalas, which later became Dire Maul. He also posed a specific historical question: “Who opposed Prince Tortheldrin when he decided to sap his own people for power to summon demons?”

Blizzard’s official Skyborne guide presents two related but distinct lineages. Horde-aligned Windshapers descend from shen’dorei high elves who received elemental skysight from wind spirits. The Alliance-aligned High Order descends from Highborne scholars of Eldre’Thalas. Those descriptions give each faction’s Skyborne a particular history and motivation rather than treating the race as a single, interchangeable elf group.

How Skyborne differs from the High or Blood Elf options players expected

Skyborne draws on elf ancestry, but Blizzard’s published account distinguishes its lineages from one another and anchors them in a story about elemental abilities and Eldre’Thalas. “Highborne,” “High Elf,” “Blood Elf,” and “shen’dorei high elf” are not interchangeable labels in the official text: it names Highborne scholars as the High Order’s ancestors and shen’dorei high elves as the Windshapers’ ancestors.

The developers’ comments explain why Blizzard found Skyborne attractive. They do not provide a direct, complete comparison with a proposed playable High Elf or Blood Elf race, or state that the Skyborne were chosen specifically to rule out either option. The most supportable distinction is therefore about the story and faction identities Blizzard has actually described, not an unstated decision-making process.

Which factions and classes can Skyborne choose?

Blizzard’s guide lists different faction-specific class options alongside classes shared by both Skyborne paths:

Skyborne path Faction Available classes
Windshaper Horde Shaman, Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid
High Order Alliance Mage, Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid

Blizzard’s official panel recap also says the race includes new druid forms.

Is “We may occasionally make a bold choice” a verified Blizzard quote?

That wording has not been verified in the Blizzard pages or interview available here, so it should not be presented as an exact quote from a Blizzard speaker. The directly attributed Jones wording that is available is: “We knew players were going to enjoy it. We have a really cool story to tell about it … so why not?”

What is known about the controversy and release?

The decision has been discussed as controversial, including criticism of adding “yet another” elf race and the mocking phrase “World of Elfcraft,” as described in the Windows Central report. Those examples show that critical reactions exist; they do not establish how most players feel. The available sources do not provide a representative poll or a measured breakdown of Skyborne’s reception.

Blizzard’s panel recap gives a planned global launch of November 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. Pacific Time. As of October 7, 2026, that date is in the future, so Skyborne is an announced race for World of Warcraft: Forever, not a race that has already launched. The announcement concerns Forever, not playable races in the main modern World of Warcraft game.
