An AI detector score is not proof of who wrote a passage. Most detectors infer authorship from patterns in the text; watermarks instead look for signals deliberately introduced during generation. Both can be useful evidence, but neither is a universal signature—and results depend on the text, the method, and the conditions under which it is tested.
What does an AI text detector actually detect?
Most AI detectors analyze a passage after it has been written. Statistical or learned methods look for features associated with machine-generated text and use them to estimate whether the passage resembles their examples of AI writing. A score expresses that estimate; by itself, it does not document the author or establish provenance.
A 2025 survey distinguishes watermarking, statistical, neural, and human-assisted approaches, and identifies evaluation and real-world use as continuing challenges. These categories do not all measure the same signal, so a result from one type of method cannot automatically validate another.

Post-hoc pattern detection
Post-hoc detectors infer from the text as supplied. Features such as perplexity or sentence-length variation may contribute to a tool’s assessment, but they are not universal proof of authorship. Human writing can have predictable patterns, and AI-generated writing can be edited into different ones.

Generation-time watermarking
A watermark is different: the text generator deliberately introduces a detectable signal while producing text, and a later checker looks for it. This can provide evidence that a compatible generation method was used, but only when the generator applied that watermark and the signal survives subsequent changes. A missing watermark does not prove that a person wrote the text.
Why can the same text get different results?
Detector performance is conditional, not a fixed property of “AI detection.” Relevant variables include passage length, the generating model, subject matter, editing, and whether the text resembles the data used to build or evaluate the detector. Translation, paraphrasing, mixed human-and-AI authorship, and distribution shifts can also matter when tested.
A 2026 comparison spanning model sizes, watermark methods, detectors, obfuscation techniques, and text lengths found no method that was consistently best in every scenario. In that study’s tests, automatic detectors performed better than watermark detectors for short synthetic text; this is a scoped result, not a rule for every tool or passage.

Length changes the amount of evidence
A short excerpt offers fewer observations from which a detector can infer a pattern. That does not mean every longer sample is reliable: a longer passage may still be heavily edited, outside the tool’s evaluation conditions, or written in a style unlike its comparison data. Ask how much text the method was evaluated on and whether that matches the passage being assessed.

Editing can alter or obscure signals
Paraphrasing and other edits can weaken some detector signals, while some watermark traces can persist through substantial changes. The direction and size of the effect depend on the method and attack, so “editing always beats detectors” and “watermarks cannot be removed” are both too broad.
Can paraphrasing defeat an AI detector?
Published experiments show that paraphrasing can sharply reduce performance for some tested detectors. In their 2023 study, Vinu Sankar Sadasivan and coauthors found that recursive paraphrasing significantly reduced detection rates while only slightly degrading text quality in many cases. Their finding concerns the methods and conditions they evaluated, not every detector in use.
In a separate 2023 experiment, Krishna and coauthors reported DetectGPT accuracy falling from 70.3% to 4.6% under the evaluated DIPPER paraphrasing attack, while holding the false-positive rate at 1%. Those figures describe one detector and one experimental setup; they are not a current accuracy estimate for AI detectors as a category.
These results show why a strong score on unedited test samples cannot, on its own, establish that a tool will remain reliable after rewriting. They do not show that every paraphrase defeats every method.

Do AI text watermarks work?
Watermark studies present a more mixed picture than either “watermarks are foolproof” or “paraphrasing erases them.” Results depend on the watermark scheme, how much text is available, and what kind of editing or attack is applied.
In a 2023 study, Kirchenbauer and coauthors found that detecting watermarked text after strong human paraphrasing required observing an average of 800 tokens to reach a 1e-5 false-positive rate with the method they studied. This is not an across-the-board minimum length for watermarks.
A 2025 study by Harel-Canada and coauthors found traces remained in 100% of perturbed texts after hundreds of edits under its tested conditions. Its tested automated attacks removed watermarks 26% of the time, and a human-quality-reviewed variant removed them 10% of the time. These results qualify claims that tested watermarks are always easy to erase; they do not establish that all watermark schemes are robust.

In a September 24, 2026 DEV Community post, Chen Jiayan says they built a detector at detectaiwatermarks.com that returns a confidence score and an explanation of which signals fired. The post describes an example using perplexity, sentence-length variance (sometimes called “burstiness”), and a watermark scan, with verdict calibration based on input length.

Jiayan says the tool should return “not enough signal” for short text rather than guess. That is the author’s description of the product and design, not an independent verification of its implementation, present availability, or benchmark performance. The principle is useful beyond this particular project: when the evidence is too thin, abstaining is more honest than presenting a confident-looking label.
How to evaluate a detector result
Before treating a score as evidence in a consequential decision, ask what produced it and what the number means. A responsible assessment should consider the detector’s method, evaluation data, threshold, and known limits—not just the displayed verdict.
- Identify the signal. Is the tool inferring patterns after writing, checking a generation-time watermark, or combining methods?
- Check the false-positive rate and threshold. Find out how often human-written text was flagged under the reported evaluation and at what decision threshold.
- Match the conditions. Ask whether the tested text length, model, subject, editing, and language resemble the passage in question.
- Look for uncertainty reporting. A useful result explains which signals contributed and can decline to classify a passage when there is too little evidence.
- Use independent context. Draft history, source notes, and direct discussion with the writer can inform a review; a detector score alone should not carry the burden of proving authorship.
There is no comprehensive, current side-by-side ranking of commercial detectors established by the studies cited here. Published results are method- and test-specific, so a claim such as “this detector is accurate” is incomplete without the evaluation conditions and error rates.

Treat a detector output as a lead for further review, not as a verdict about who wrote something. For an accusation, disciplinary decision, or authorship finding, ask for the method, threshold, false-positive rate, amount of text, and evaluation conditions behind the result—and weigh it alongside evidence that does not come from the detector.
