A click handler that replaces its target can change which element receives the next physical click. Since dblclick follows two click events, the original node may no longer be the target—or may no longer have the listener—when the second click occurs. The result depends on the DOM update and browser dispatch behavior; it is not a universal rule that browsers suppress dblclick.
Why replacing the element can disrupt a double-click
MDN documents the event sequence: dblclick fires after two click events, each associated with a mousedown and mouseup pair. That means your click handler runs before the later dblclick event.
If that handler removes or replaces the clicked node, the next physical click can hit a different node. The old node may be gone, its listener may be gone with it, or the new node may have a different event path. So code that expects the original element to receive dblclick can appear silent even though the browser processed the clicks.
A Firefox report, Mozilla Bugzilla issue 1830454, describes a list item being removed on click and a dblclick observed on the item that replaced it. The discussion examines Firefox’s handling of native click counts and frame replacement. This is evidence of a particular investigation, not a cross-browser guarantee or a settled web-platform rule.

How to make the interaction more reliable
Keep the event target stable when possible
If the interface only needs to show a different state, update the existing element’s content or state instead of recreating the node. Keeping the same node preserves its identity and any listener attached to it.
Delegate from a stable ancestor when replacing children is necessary
Attach the listener to a parent that survives the update, then identify the relevant descendant from the event. For example:

Confirm that the selected descendant is the one your application means to handle, particularly if the target can be a nested child. Diagnose what receives each click
Log the event type, target, current target, and click count, then compare node identity before and after the first click handler. This helps distinguish a missing listener from a second click that lands on a replacement node:

Its reset interval varies by browser and platform and can be affected by user preferences, so do not depend on a hard-coded universal double-click duration. See MDN’s click event reference.
- Check whether the listener is still attached after the first handler runs.
- Inspect
event.targeton both clicks to see whether the hit target changed. - Check
event.currentTargetto confirm which listener received each event. - Verify that any delegated selector matches the current DOM and that the event bubbles through the chosen ancestor.
- Test the interaction in the browsers and user settings that matter for your application.
What to expect across browsers
MDN documents the general event sequence and broad browser availability of dblclick, but the Firefox Bugzilla report does not establish identical behavior in every browser. Browser dispatch details and the way a particular update changes the hit-tested target can affect the result. Treat node replacement as a likely cause to investigate, not proof that all browsers handle the sequence the same way.
