Crypto prices were falling ahead of October 10, 2026, the first anniversary of Bitcoin’s 2025 flash crash—but the anniversary is a timing coincidence, not an established cause. In a market snapshot published October 8, CoinDesk reported Bitcoin just above $80,000, with other major tokens also posting steep losses. The report cited several possible pressures but did not measure how much any one of them contributed.
What happened to crypto prices in October 2026?
CoinDesk’s October 8, 2026 snapshot put Bitcoin just above $80,000, a one-month low. It reported a 4% decline over the prior 24 hours and a drop of more than 8% from nearly $87,000 four days earlier. These are figures reported on that date, not live prices.
The selling extended beyond Bitcoin. CoinDesk reported the following 24-hour losses and said all four assets were down by double-digit percentages over the week:

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Why is crypto falling?
CoinDesk identified several concerns that may have weighed on investors, but its report did not establish that any one of them caused the selloff or rank their importance.
- Oil prices and interest rates: CoinDesk said rising oil prices and higher rates potentially could siphon money away from risk assets such as Bitcoin. That is a possible mechanism, not a measured explanation of the price move.
- Regulatory uncertainty: The report pointed to uncertainty after the failure of the Clarity Act.
- U.S. midterm elections: The approaching elections were another concern it listed for crypto investors.
The available reporting does not quantify these pressures or separate their effects from other market forces. The October 10 anniversary, by itself, is not evidence of a cause.

What happened in the October 10, 2025 Bitcoin flash crash?
CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin fell from about $122,000 to $105,000 on October 10, 2025, with lower prices recorded on some exchanges. Much of the decline occurred within minutes during thin Friday-evening U.S. trading. The sharp timing and trading conditions are central to why the episode was described as a flash crash.

The 2026 episode is a separate selloff in the reporting: CoinDesk’s October 8 snapshot showed broad declines across four major cryptocurrencies, while its account of the 2025 event emphasized a rapid Bitcoin drop amid thin trading. The figures do not establish that the two episodes had the same mechanics, and the report does not provide exchange-by-exchange comparisons.

What does institutional sentiment say—and what does it not say?
A separate State Street survey offers a longer-term view of institutional attitudes, not an explanation or forecast for the October price drop. State Street’s 2026 Digital Assets Study surveyed 300 asset managers, asset owners, and wealth managers across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Latin America. Fieldwork ran from July 20 to August 19, 2026.
- Mainstream expectations: 51% of respondents expected digital assets to become mainstream within five years, if they had not already, compared with 11% in 2024.
- Reported and expected allocations: State Street said average digital-asset allocations were approximately 11%, and respondents expected them to reach 17% over the next three years.
These are survey responses and reported allocations summarized by State Street, not audited portfolio measurements or predictions of market returns. They do not establish that adoption will occur or explain short-term crypto prices. State Street’s head of Digital Asset Solutions, Angus Fletcher, characterized the shift as a move toward practical issues such as infrastructure, operations, regulation, and risk; that is his interpretation of the study and market.
