Some CRT televisions stayed in service for many years, but available evidence does not prove that CRTs universally outlast modern TVs. The comparison is easily skewed: a TV may be replaced while it still works, and a replacement cycle is not the same thing as a component failure or a set’s maximum repairable life.

What does it mean for a TV to “last”?

Several different measures can be described as a television’s lifespan, and they answer different questions:

  • First useful service life: how long an owner uses a set before it is no longer useful to them.
  • Replacement cycle: the time between buying a TV and replacing it, whether the old one still works or not.
  • Time to hardware failure: how long before a component fails or the picture becomes unusable.
  • Repairable life: how long a set could remain in service if a fault can be diagnosed and repaired economically.

These measures should not be treated as interchangeable. A replacement-rate figure cannot, by itself, tell you how long a TV would have operated if its owner had kept it.

What the lifespan figures actually show

Germany’s Federal Environment Agency reported an average first useful service life of 10–12 years for CRT televisions during 2005–2012. This is a historical, Germany-specific estimate—not a universal maximum lifespan or a controlled comparison with today’s TVs. Umweltbundesamt, “Obsolescence fact check”

A separate European Commission review used TV replacement rates as a proxy for service life. It reported 9–11 years in the 1990s, 5–6 years during 2003–2010, and 8–9 years in a later period. Those figures describe replacement behavior, not laboratory-measured time to failure, and they do not isolate CRTs from current models. Why an old CRT can seem to have outlasted newer TVs

A working TV can still be replaced

In Germany, the Federal Environment Agency reported that more than 60% of functioning flat-screen TVs were replaced in 2012 because owners wanted newer or better devices. That statistic is about working sets and owners’ reasons for replacing them; it is not a failure rate.

  • Digital coaxial audio output connects to your multi-channel audio/video receiver for surround sound content
  • Glow-key remote control, icon-based on-screen displays, V-chip, and an auto-clock

The same Agency summary separately reported that technical defects prompted roughly two thirds of television purchases, with figures of 57.6% in 2004 and 55.6% in 2012/2013. These figures concern purchase reasons in different survey periods and must not be conflated with the finding about functioning flat screens replaced for an upgrade. Memorable survivors shape the comparison

It is natural to remember the CRT that kept working for years, while giving less thought to older sets that failed or were discarded. That survivor-and-memory effect is a plausible explanation for the impression that every old TV was exceptionally durable, but it is not a measured result in the sources cited here.

Different display technologies have different failure modes

CRTs use a vacuum-tube display, while modern televisions commonly use flat-panel technologies such as LCD with LED backlighting or OLED. Their components and failure modes differ, so the fact that one technology is older does not establish that its architecture is inherently more reliable. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes CRT display technology, while testing by RTINGS reports examples of backlight failures in tested LCD TVs and discusses burn-in risk from cumulative static-image exposure on OLED displays. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “Televisions and Video Display Monitors”; RTINGS, “TV Failures On The Accelerated Longevity Test”; RTINGS, “How Have New Display Technologies Impacted Longevity?: Our Longevity 3.0 And Burn-In Test”

RTINGS’ tests provide examples of what can fail under their test conditions. They cover selected units and do not establish an average lifespan for all modern televisions.

Repairability can extend service, but it is not a guarantee

A faulty TV may remain usable if the problem can be repaired, the necessary parts and expertise are available, and the cost makes sense. In preliminary repairability findings, the European Commission review identified remote controls, external power supplies, and internal power boards among components likely to fail or break. This points to repair-relevant parts in flat-screen sets; it does not establish that CRTs are always easier or cheaper to repair today. How to compare two specific TVs fairly

For a meaningful comparison, first define what “lasted longer” means, then account for the sets and their use:

  • Choose the metric: actual hardware failure, first useful service life, or replacement cycle.
  • Identify the display and model: CRT, LCD with LED backlight, and OLED are not interchangeable categories; individual implementations differ.
  • Consider how each set was used: operating hours, brightness, static content, and environment can matter. The sources here do not establish one standardized usage assumption for a fair CRT-versus-modern comparison.
  • Name the failure point: distinguish a tube or panel problem from a backlight, power supply, control board, remote, or another component.
  • Account for repair: diagnosis, parts supply, technician availability, price, and the picture quality after repair all affect whether a set returns to service.
  • Separate defect from preference: a working set replaced for newer features is not evidence that it failed early.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The sources provide a historical estimate for CRTs in Germany and separate replacement-rate figures covering different periods. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head study that compares CRT and current LCD, LED-backlit, or OLED televisions under the same usage, repair, and replacement assumptions. The figures therefore cannot support a precise claim about how many years modern TVs lose compared with CRTs, or a single lifespan number for “a TV.”

The most defensible answer is that some CRTs had long useful lives, while modern TVs can also be replaced before they fail. Differences in technology, use, repair decisions, and owners’ expectations all affect the comparison; the available evidence does not establish that CRT televisions universally lasted longer.
