Pearl Abyss Europe CEO Lybee Park argues that critics had limited time and played a pre-launch build that differed from the release version, leaving them less opportunity to discover the details she considers central to Crimson Desert. That is her explanation for the gap in reception—not proof that review conditions caused it.
What did the Pearl Abyss executive say?
In an interview published by The Game Business on October 8, 2026, Park said critics reviewed a build that was not the exact launch version and had limited time to play. She said reviewers often follow the main story, while the game’s appeal is also found in less obvious details throughout its world.

Park’s remark describes her view of the review experience. The available reporting does not establish that limited review time or the pre-launch build caused critics to rate the game lower.

What do the scores show—and what don’t they show?
The Game Business framed its interview question around a Metacritic critic score of 77, attributing that figure to the outlet’s October 8, 2026 coverage. On Metacritic’s page snapshot accessed October 9, 2026, Crimson Desert displayed an 8.8 user score from 13,492 user ratings and 115 critic reviews. Those are separate measures, and the user score is a dated snapshot that may change; they should not be treated as a synchronized comparison. GamesRadar reported a different user-score snapshot, 8.7, on October 9.
Neither score establishes why critics and users may rate a game differently. The sources do not provide a study or statistic showing that review-window length explains any gap. For context, check the platform and date, whether the figure is from critics or users, the rating or review count, and—where reported—the build and time reviewers had.

Why is the review window part of the dispute?
Reviews assess the version critics received under the conditions available to them. Park says those conditions limited the opportunity to encounter optional details, but GamesRadar’s Austin Wood points out that Pearl Abyss set the review period. A longer window might give reviewers more time with a game, but it does not make the version they actually reviewed irrelevant or settle whether Park’s explanation accounts for the scores.
How has the game changed since launch?
Pearl Abyss announced the worldwide release for March 19, 2026, describing Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure focused on exploration, combat, and traversal. It launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally.

VGC reported post-launch patches and updates addressing difficulty, storage, and graphics. Pearl Abyss’s current game site describes an Enhanced edition, added language support, further updates, and a free upgrade for current owners. This continuing development is relevant context, but it does not show that later changes explain the original review scores.

The most defensible takeaway is that Park believes critics had too little time with a non-final build to experience the game’s world beyond its main story. Critics, meanwhile, can only judge what they were given, and the review period was set by the publisher. The available evidence supports reporting both points; it does not establish one as the cause of the score gap.
