Copilot can give different answers with GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 because the underlying models may respond differently—and because the model, response mode, available context, or product surface may differ between runs. To make a fair comparison, hold those other factors constant and check each answer’s claims against its cited sources. Microsoft’s official material does not establish a general accuracy winner between these model versions.

Why Copilot’s answers can differ

The underlying model is only one variable

Different models can produce different wording, levels of detail, and conclusions from the same prompt. But a pair of different answers does not, by itself, show that the models alone caused the difference.

Auto routing and response modes can change the run

Microsoft says Copilot’s default Auto mode uses real-time routing based on the prompt. The available model choices and selector can change as models are added. Quick response prioritizes speed for routine requests, while Think deeper may use a reasoning model for more complex work. These settings are not interchangeable ways of running the same fixed model. Microsoft’s Copilot overview describes model selection and routing.

Surface, account, and context affect the evidence

Copilot’s access to web information and work content varies by product surface and license. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium can use organizational data through Microsoft Graph, while basic experiences offer narrower ways to provide organizational content. If one run has a file, work data, or different grounding available and the other does not, the comparison is not isolating model choice. See Microsoft’s overview of Copilot experiences and grounding.

Claude fallback behavior is not proof of Copilot routing

Anthropic documents that Sonnet 5.5 can switch to Sonnet 5 for certain requests and that Claude labels a response with the model that answered. That describes Claude experiences; it does not establish how Copilot routes or labels every response. Anthropic explains the fallback behavior here.

Are GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 available in your Copilot?

Not necessarily. A preserved Microsoft 365 Message Center notice, MC1483844, describes a phased rollout of GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 across supported Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences beginning around September 30–October 1, 2026. It lists eligible licensing and organization configuration conditions. Claude requires Anthropic enablement; GPT-6.1 Sol can require OpenAI enablement on select surfaces. The notice is not evidence that either model is available to every personal Copilot user, region, app, or tenant. Check your own model selector and, for a work account, your organization’s settings. The archived MC1483844 notice records the rollout details.

How to compare answers fairly

  1. Choose a checkable question. Use a question with claims you can verify, and provide the same relevant excerpt or file to both runs. Ask for the same format and level of detail.
  2. Keep the run conditions the same. Use the same Copilot surface and account. Select a named model rather than Auto if the selector offers that option. Record the displayed model and mode, and note any model label or fallback notice.
  3. Save the full prompt and outputs. Keep each complete answer and its citations. Do not compare a Researcher report with a short chat response as if model identity were the only difference.
  4. Break each answer into factual claims. For every claim, note the cited evidence, whether the source directly supports it, and what remains uncertain.
  5. Open the cited sources. Check the relevant passage, publication date, version, and geography where those details matter. For figures, confirm that the cited source actually reports the number.
  6. Resolve conflicts rather than averaging them. If sources disagree, explain their dates or scopes; do not smooth over a real difference. Treat agreement between models as a useful lead, not proof: both can repeat an error or rely on a citation that does not support the sentence.

Can Researcher Model Council compare GPT and Claude?

Microsoft says Researcher Model Council can send the same question to multiple deep-reasoning GPT and Claude agents, preserve each full report, and summarize where they agree, differ, or add unique information. It can help surface competing lines of reasoning, but its summary is not a substitute for checking the reports’ sources. Microsoft’s description does not establish that the Council uses the exact GPT-6.1 Sol and Sonnet 5.5 pair in every tenant. Microsoft’s Model Council guidance says access requires the Frontier program; model choice requires a Copilot license, and an administrator must enable Anthropic to use Claude in Researcher.

Is one model more accurate?

The official sources cited here do not provide a head-to-head accuracy benchmark for GPT-6.1 Sol versus Claude Sonnet 5.5 inside Copilot. There is therefore no evidence-based overall winner to declare. Judge them on the task you actually have: correctness against primary evidence, completeness, citation quality, useful presentation, and the time it takes you to verify the result. No general ranking follows from a difference in style or from the models agreeing.
