Cody Rhodes failed to qualify because Kevin Owens won the final men’s triple-threat qualifier, beating Rhodes and Johnny Gargano. WWE’s event page says Randy Orton interfered “to keep The American Nightmare from winning.” The evidence supports one decisive match outcome and circumstance—not three separately confirmed causes.
What happened in the qualifier?
In the final men’s qualifier, Kevin Owens faced Cody Rhodes and Johnny Gargano. Owens won the triple-threat match and claimed the last place in the men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. WWE’s official match page identifies Owens as the final entrant and says Randy Orton interfered to prevent Rhodes from winning.

Three points that explain Rhodes’s failure to qualify
1. Owens won the match
The immediate reason is the result: Owens defeated both Rhodes and Gargano. Only the winner took the available final spot, so Rhodes did not qualify.

WWE specifically attributes an interference role to Randy Orton, stating that he interfered “to keep The American Nightmare from winning.” That is WWE’s event-page narration; it is not a quotation attributed to a named speaker. The cited reporting establishes the interference as a circumstance of the finish, but does not establish a separate backstage motive for Orton.

3. A triple-threat match left Rhodes exposed to more than one opponent
This is a format-based interpretation, not another independently reported cause. With three wrestlers in the qualifier and one spot available, Rhodes had to win while accounting for both Owens and Gargano. WWE described the qualification process as a series of triple-threat matches, with six men qualifying for the ladder match. The format helps explain the competitive situation, but it does not prove that Rhodes would have qualified in a one-on-one match.

WWE’s qualifying-matches roundup described the men’s and women’s qualification process and listed wrestlers who had qualified when the page was published on September 16, 2026. That list is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the final field. The event page gave Saturday, October 10, 2026, as the event date.
A contemporaneous Sports Illustrated recap of the October 2 SmackDown, published October 3, also reports Owens qualifying at Rhodes’s expense. The cited sources do not establish a third discrete cause such as injury, favoritism, booking intent, or a specific performance failure by Rhodes.
