WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 was a global contest in which competitors demonstrated practical and technical skills—not an athletic Olympics. China, the host, topped the medal table. A Hindustan Times article republishing The Economist reported that China won a record 41 gold medals, though the WorldSkills pages cited here confirm China’s lead without independently confirming that exact total.
What is the WorldSkills Competition?
WorldSkills is an international competition in which people perform tasks in vocational trades and technical fields. Competitors are assessed on their work, and official results are organized by skill, listing each competitor’s placement, score, member and award. It is sometimes described as the “skills Olympics,” but the comparison is about the event’s international scale and range of disciplines, not sport.
Shanghai hosted the 2026 edition in September. WorldSkills’ closing-ceremony preview listed 1,400 competitors from 68 countries and regions. Its China member profile lists 71 Chinese competitors taking part in 64 skills. WorldSkills International publishes event information and results.

How did China perform?
WorldSkills confirms that China topped the Shanghai 2026 medal table. The Hindustan Times article republishing The Economist reported 41 gold medals, a record for China and ten times South Korea’s four. The official pages cited here do not independently confirm that precise aggregate, so the 41-gold figure should be understood as the article’s report, not a separately verified WorldSkills total.

A national medal-table lead does not mean China won every skill. Results are awarded skill by skill: for example, official results show China winning Industrial Mechanics and Automobile Technology, while Chinese Taipei won Cyber Security. For placements and scores, consult the WorldSkills official results database and the Cyber Security results.
How are competitors judged and awarded?
Within each skill, competitors’ work is scored. Gold, silver and bronze go to the highest-scoring competitors in that skill; Medals for Excellence recognize competitors who meet world-class standards. These awards compare performance in a discipline, while the national medal table aggregates results across disciplines.

Why did China give the event so much attention?
The Economist’s analysis, republished by Hindustan Times, presents China’s focus as serving several aims. Highly visible wins can foster national pride, while the event offers a platform to project soft power and promote Luban workshops, Chinese technology and standards abroad. The article also links the effort to a domestic challenge: encouraging young people to consider vocational training in a society where university routes may carry more prestige and factory work can face stigma.

The article describes extensive state-supported selection and training, alongside prominent domestic media coverage. These are explanations of China’s strategy, not proof that the competition changed attitudes or improved vocational outcomes. The event results establish competitive performance; they do not, by themselves, measure the success of broader political or education goals.

The same article reports that the Chinese government warned of a 10 million skilled-worker shortfall “last year.” It does not identify the agency or link the original warning, so that number is best treated as the article’s account rather than an independently verified official estimate.
China’s WorldSkills history: joining and competing are different milestones
China joined WorldSkills in 2010, according to its official member profile. Its first listed competition entry was London 2011, with six competitors in six skills. Saying that China only joined in 2011 confuses membership with its first competition appearance.

What the closing message emphasized
At the closing ceremony, WorldSkills President Francis Hourant encouraged participants to carry the event’s spirit beyond the competition: “Five days ago, we arrived as strangers. Tonight, we leave as friends. Take this feeling home with you. Remember in life that learning is the reward. Be a changemaker. Be a peace builder. Be a WorldSkills Champion. There is a spark lit in you. Develop that and share it with the world.”
