Chemically damaged hair can feel rougher or harder to comb because damage can reduce the protective lipid coating on the hair surface, increasing friction between fibers and between hair and a comb. A 2025 review identifies loss of 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA) as a major contributor to higher friction in aged and weathered hair. Friction is part of the explanation—not the only one: cuticle structure, humidity, cleanliness, and other factors also influence how hair moves and feels.
How friction changes the way hair feels
Friction is the resistance that arises when hair surfaces slide against one another or against a hand, brush, or comb. It influences sensations such as smoothness and drag, as well as how easily strands move during grooming. In their 2025 review, Erik Weiand and coauthors describe pleasant sensory perception during touching, brushing, and combing as largely determined by hair friction. Read the review abstract on PubMed.
Higher friction can make strands resist sliding past one another, contributing to a rougher feel or more difficult combing. But the sensation is not a direct measurement of damage: several surface and environmental factors can change friction, and the studies do not establish a universal friction level for every person’s hair.

The role of 18-MEA
Hair’s outer surface includes a protective monolayer containing 18-methyleicosanoic acid, usually abbreviated 18-MEA. The 2025 review identifies progressive loss of this layer as a main contributor to increased friction in aged and weathered hair. Bleaching, colouring, heat, and mechanical processes can accelerate that loss, according to the review.

When the surface becomes less protected, fibers may not slide as easily against one another or grooming tools. This helps explain why processed hair may feel less smooth. It does not mean that 18-MEA loss is the only cause of roughness, or that every instance of tangling can be attributed to one surface change.
Other influences on hair-to-hair friction
Hair friction is directional: cuticle edges can interact differently depending on the direction in which a strand slides. The review also identifies humidity, cleanliness, age, and biological characteristics as factors that can affect friction. As a result, the feel of the same hair may vary across conditions, and findings from one group of fibers should not automatically be generalized to all hair types.

What studies show—and what they do not
Measurements on human hair
A 2010 study measured virgin and chemically damaged human hair fibers in dry and aqueous conditions. It reported distinguishable friction coefficients among the studied categories and higher coefficients in water for all categories examined. The study also detected conditioner species along the cuticular surface. These findings describe that experiment; they do not establish a universal rule for all hair types or every wet-hair situation. See the 2010 study record on PubMed.
A biomimetic model of surface chemistry
A 2023 study used water-lubricated, functionalized silica surfaces in experiments and coarse-grained model surfaces in simulations to investigate nanoscale friction. As modeled chemical damage increased, nanoscale friction increased in the tested system. The authors attributed that increase to changed surface chemistry rather than changes in roughness or subsurface damage. This supports a possible mechanism; it does not prove that surface roughness is irrelevant to every kind of damage in real hair. Read the study in Nanoscale.

Can conditioner reduce friction?
Conditioners can deposit chemicals on the hair surface and temporarily change its friction. The 2025 review says conditioners can reduce friction to levels similar to virgin hair through this surface effect. That is not evidence of permanent repair to the hair fiber or restoration of its original structure. The 2010 human-hair study’s detection of conditioner species on cuticles is consistent with surface deposition, but neither source establishes that a specific retail product will produce a particular result.
For a product choice, check whether it is a rinse-out or leave-in conditioner, whether its stated use includes chemically treated hair, its formulation claims, directions, and cost per use. A label or ingredient claim alone does not guarantee a measured reduction in friction. The available studies do not identify a best brand or establish that one comb design outperforms another.

How to interpret a rough or tangled feel
Friction offers a useful explanation for why processed hair can feel rough or resist combing: chemical and other damage may remove protective surface material, while surface chemistry and cuticle interactions affect how fibers slide. It is not a diagnosis, a product rating, or a single-cause explanation. The evidence supports a surface-friction mechanism, with results that depend on the hair and conditions being studied.
