Cash App may block an Add Money transaction because the linked bank account or card is ineligible or declined, your account needs verification, an account-specific limit applies, or the service is having a temporary problem. First identify whether you’re adding money from a linked payment source or depositing paper cash at a retailer: those are separate features with different requirements.
First, identify which kind of cash deposit is failing
For money from a linked source, Cash App’s instructions are to open the Money tab, tap Add money, enter an amount, and confirm. Cash App lists bank accounts, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay as funding methods. See Cash App’s Add Money instructions.

For physical bills, the separate feature is called Deposit paper money. A problem with one flow does not necessarily mean the other is unavailable.

Check that the bank account or card qualifies
Cash App’s U.S. terms say a linked external bank account must be in the United States and you must be authorized to use it. An external debit card must be valid, issued by a U.S. financial institution, and display a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo. A card or account outside these stated conditions may not be eligible. Review the Cash App U.S. Terms of Service.

Look for verification prompts and account limits
If Cash App cannot verify your information, it may restrict your account and access to some services. The terms also allow Cash App to set balance and transaction limits. Check the app for prompts or notices; limits and restrictions can be account-specific, so another user’s experience may not match yours.
Rule out a temporary service issue
Cash App reported that an Apple Pay Add Money issue was resolved for most customers on October 5, 2026, while warning that a small number of attempts could still fail. Its guidance was to wait a few minutes and try again, or use another debit card or linked external bank account. The status page showed Add Cash operational on October 6, 2026, but that snapshot cannot establish the cause of a later or individual decline. Check Cash App Status for current service information.

If depositing paper cash at a retailer fails
In the app, open Money, choose Deposit paper money, and enter your ZIP code to find participating locations. Follow the app’s instructions for that retailer: you may need to present the generated barcode or swipe an active Cash App Card. Keep the receipt. Availability depends on both account eligibility and whether a participating store is available nearby.
Cash App’s U.S. terms list a $1 fee per paper-money deposit. They also say a retailer may require a minimum deposit of $5 or $20, depending on the deposit method. Confirm the fee, minimum, and store instructions in the app before traveling; paper-deposit limits are individualized and displayed in the app.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Match the feature to the problem: use Money → Add money for a linked funding source, or Money → Deposit paper money for bills.
- Read the in-app error or prompt: resolve any verification request or account notice before retrying.
- Check the funding source: confirm you are authorized to use it and that the bank account or debit card meets Cash App’s U.S. requirements.
- Check status and retry: if a service issue is reported, wait a few minutes and try again; if available, try another eligible linked bank account or debit card.
- For physical cash, check eligibility and store details: find a participating location through the app and review your displayed limits and the retailer’s deposit requirements.
- Contact Cash App through its in-app support channel if it still fails: a public status page cannot reveal your account’s specific restriction or transaction limit. Never share your PIN or password with anyone claiming to help.
Other ways money can reach your Cash App balance
Cash App’s terms also describe receiving an incoming peer-to-peer payment or receiving direct deposits. These may be alternatives when appropriate, but they do not diagnose or fix a failed Add Money transaction.
