Keep an LCD or LED TV upright whenever you move it. Laying it face-down or on its side puts pressure on the display, and manufacturer guidance warns about jolts, vibration, and frame flex that can stress the panel. The one face-down position that manufacturers describe is a short stand-attachment step on a cushioned surface, and even that depends on the model.
What the manufacturer and shipping guidance says
Three sources cover this question directly. Each one leads to the same practical rule, though they approach it from slightly different angles.
- UPS, “How To Ship a TV.” UPS advises keeping a television upright throughout shipping. For LCD and LED sets, it says the sets are not designed to be laid on their sides because pressure can affect the display. The page is general shipping advice rather than model-specific instruction, and it carries no publication date.
- LG Electronics, TV owner’s manual (safety and reference, lifting and moving). LG tells owners to avoid jolts and excessive vibration, and to avoid pressure that flexes or bends the frame chassis.
- Sony, XR77/65/55A8x reference guide (official regional guide). Sony warns against stressing the panel and frame and against jolts or excessive vibration. The guide covers specific model families, so it should not be read as a rule for every brand.
UPS puts the principle in one sentence: “Keeping a television set upright during every step of the shipping process is crucial.” The statement is organizational guidance from UPS, and the page does not name an individual author.

Why a flat orientation is the problem
An LCD or LED panel is a thin, layered assembly held inside a frame. When the set lies face-down, its weight and any object pressing on it are carried by the screen and the surrounding frame rather than by the stand or the sturdy back of the chassis. Manufacturer warnings point to three risks: pressure on the display itself, flexing or bending of the frame, and shocks or sustained vibration that pass through a panel that is not supported the way it is when the set stands on its base. None of the guidance quantifies how much a flat position raises the chance of breakage, and no published damage rate compares face-down with upright transport. The advice rests on manufacturer warnings, not on a measured failure figure.

The one face-down step manufacturers describe
LG’s guide tells owners to place the screen facing down on a cushioned table or flat surface when attaching the stand. That is a controlled installation step with the set held still, not a method for moving it. Sony’s guide says the opposite for handling and mounting: do not lay its covered TV down. Because the two manufacturers differ, the only reliable source for any face-down step is the manual for your exact model.

How to prepare a TV for a move
- Turn the set off and disconnect the power cord and every cable. LG’s guide recommends this, and Sony says the same for all cables.
- Use the original carton and packing material if you still have them. UPS calls the retail box the best option. If it is gone, use a box sized for a television, with cushioning on all sides. Sony also recommends the original carton and packing material for moving or repairs.
- Fix the TV inside the box so it cannot shift. UPS describes cushioning the box, using foam edge protectors, and securing the set and its accessories.
- Keep accessories off the screen side of the box. UPS warns that items placed there can damage the set.
- Keep the box upright in the vehicle, on a stable surface, and away from anything that might press on it.
- For a large set, arrange two or more people to lift and carry it, as the model manual specifies.
If you no longer have the packaging, a professional TV packing service is one option. UPS lists packing experts among its shipping options, though the page does not describe pricing or any specific provider.

Handling the frame without flexing it
- Hold the top and bottom of the frame firmly, as LG’s guide directs.
- Avoid the transparent area of the panel, the speakers, and the speaker grill. Pressure there can distort the panel or damage the speaker components.
- Do not press on the set in a way that flexes or bends the chassis.
If you cannot keep the TV upright
None of the guidance reviewed describes a safe way to transport a flat-screen television lying down. If a move leaves no alternative, check the exact model manual and contact the manufacturer before you lay the set flat. Keeping the TV upright in its box, with the cushioning and restraints described above, is the approach the manufacturers and UPS support.
