When an app won’t install on Android TV, the cause is usually one of four things: the app isn’t offered for that TV, the TV is short on storage, the network or Play Store download has stalled, or the system needs a restart or update. Work through them in that order. The first check often settles the question, and the later steps are only worth trying if the earlier ones come back clean.
Start with whether the app is offered for your TV
A missing app is often a compatibility question rather than a broken TV. Google’s Play Help page “Can’t find an app” ties availability to compatibility, and Google states that individual app developers determine whether their app supports a given device. An app can therefore be absent from your TV’s Play Store even when it works fine on a phone.
- Open the Play Store on the TV itself and search for the app’s exact name. Do not rely on the phone listing, because a phone listing does not mean the TV can install the app.
- If the app appears, open its listing on the TV and look for a compatibility or device message. If the install button is missing or the app does not appear at all, the TV is not currently offered that app.
- If the listing does not explain the gap, check the app developer’s support information or your TV manufacturer’s support pages, as Google’s guidance suggests.
Android TV and Google TV are closely related platforms, and Google’s “How Google TV & Android TV work” page is the reference for how the two relate. Menu labels, store behaviour and app catalogues still vary by TV model and manufacturer, so the listing on your own TV is the authority for your device.
Free up storage
Low storage is a plausible cause of a failed install, and removing apps and games you no longer use is the simplest documented fix. Google’s “Download or delete apps & games” help page covers removing apps. Labels for the management screens differ by model and manufacturer, so look for the app-management area your TV provides.

Adding a USB drive
Google’s “Get more storage for your Android TV” page says a USB drive can add space on supported devices. It also gives three cautions that matter before you act:
- The steps may not work on every TV.
- The page specifies FAT file formats, so confirm your TV’s requirements before connecting or formatting a drive.
- Formatting erases everything on the drive, so move any files you need off it first.
Check the network connection
Confirm the TV is connected to the network you intend to use, then retry the install. Google TV’s “Fix problems with your Google TV device” page advises checking network settings and restarting the router or adjusting the connection where needed. That is general Google TV guidance, and the exact Android TV menu path depends on your model.

Restart the TV and check for system updates
Restart the TV, then look for a pending system update and install it if one is available. Google’s Play Store download troubleshooting page, “Fix problems downloading apps with basic troubleshooting steps”, recommends the same basic sequence: connectivity, storage, system updates and a restart. That page also gives a “less than 1 GB” storage warning, but it is written for Android phones and tablets. Do not treat that threshold as an Android TV rule.

Clear app data first, and reset only as a last resort
Google’s Google TV troubleshooting page lists clearing app data as a next step, and a factory reset as a later one. Clearing the data of the app that fails to install is the less disruptive option. A factory reset erases the TV’s data, so reserve it for the point where the availability, storage, network and update checks have all come back clean.

When a separate Google TV device is worth considering
Google TV devices have their own app installation flow, described in “Install apps on Google TV”, and setup is covered in “Set up your Google TV device & remote”. App and feature availability varies by device and region, so a streaming device is a conditional option rather than a fix. It may help if the app you need is offered for that device in your region and your built-in platform does not offer it. It will not make an app available where it isn’t offered.
