A café’s fast fibre connection does not guarantee fast Wi-Fi at your table. Fibre supplies internet to the venue; your device still has to share a wireless link with other devices and get a clear signal from an access point. Crowding on 2.4 GHz can contribute to slowdowns, but weak signal, obstacles, and other conditions can also be responsible.
Why fast fibre does not mean fast Wi-Fi at your seat
Think of the connection as two stages: the café’s internet service carries data to and from the wider internet, while Wi-Fi carries it between the café’s access point and your device. A fast service at the first stage cannot guarantee a fast connection at the second. Intel lists other devices using the band, channel characteristics, and physical obstructions among factors that affect Wi-Fi performance (Intel’s Wi-Fi connection guidance).
When several nearby devices and networks use the same wireless channel, they share limited airtime. Your request to load a webpage may have to wait for wireless transmissions to finish before it can be sent or received. That wait can make a page appear stuck on its spinner even though the café’s fibre service is capable of much higher speeds.
Intel notes that performance in a crowded wireless landscape can degrade and improve as other people use their Wi-Fi networks (Intel). This describes a possible mechanism, not a diagnosis of any particular café: the cited guidance does not measure a café’s slowdown or establish why a specific guest’s connection is slow.

Why 2.4 GHz can be especially crowded
The familiar 2.4 GHz channel plan uses channels 1, 6, and 11 to avoid overlap in common deployments. Cisco identifies these as the non-overlapping channels in its guidance for the United States, and Intel’s recommendation to use them is explicitly for North America (Cisco’s channel guidance; Intel’s channel guidance). That is a channel plan, not a promise that every country permits the same channels or that all nearby devices will be distributed evenly across them. Local rules and available channels vary by geography.
If multiple access points or devices are active on the same channel, their transmissions compete for airtime. Even without a crowded channel, signal loss from distance or obstacles can slow the wireless link. The band and channel are therefore only part of the picture; changing channels cannot fix every cause of poor performance.

Other reasons the connection may feel slow
- Weak signal: Your seat may be far from the access point or separated from it by walls, furniture, or other obstacles. Microsoft’s guidance explains how home layout and obstructions can affect Wi-Fi signal (Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout).
- Many active users: A busy café may have numerous devices using the wireless network at once. More devices do not prove that congestion is the cause, but shared airtime is a plausible contributor.
- Band differences: If the café offers more than one Wi-Fi band, performance and coverage can differ by band and by your device’s connection. Intel compares 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz and their characteristics in its explainer (Intel: 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz vs. 6 GHz).
What you can try as a café guest
- Move closer to the access point or into a clearer spot. If the signal improves, distance or obstacles may be part of the problem.
- Check whether the café offers another network or band. If it does, try the alternative; a different band may have different coverage or congestion. Your device may not support every band the café offers.
- Retry after a short interval. Shared wireless conditions can change as people connect, disconnect, or stop transferring data.
- Ask staff whether the network is experiencing an issue. A guest generally cannot inspect or change the café’s access-point channel settings.
Buying a personal router or adapter does not give you control over the café’s access point or remove congestion on its shared network. An analyzer can help assess channel use in supported environments, but that assessment is useful to the person managing the wireless equipment, not a way for a guest to change the venue network.
What the café operator can change
An operator can assess nearby channel use and, where the access point and local rules allow, choose a less-used channel. Intel describes using a Wi-Fi analyzer or Killer Control Center in supported environments to identify channel use (Intel’s channel guidance). A channel change may help when interference is the issue, but it will not resolve weak coverage, an overloaded internet service, or every other source of slow performance.

The key distinction is between a possible cause and a confirmed one: channel crowding can make café Wi-Fi sluggish even with fast fibre, but without measurements of that venue and your connection, it cannot be identified as the cause of a particular slow page.
