Blizzard says it is announcing major games years early because its teams are planning further ahead and feel more confident attaching target years to projects. The company says those targets give players something concrete to anticipate, while leaving developers time to make the games well. For at least one project, an early announcement is also meant to open a conversation with players before priorities are locked in.
Why Blizzard says it is sharing games so early
Blizzard president Johanna Faries describes the change as a shift toward more coordinated, long-range planning across the company’s franchises. In an interview with Inven Global published September 13, 2026, she said Blizzard had become more confident about attaching release windows to major projects, rather than announcing a game with no indication of when players might get it.
Faries has described three organizational priorities behind that approach: making high-quality products, attracting and nurturing talent, and getting teams to plan strategically together. The idea is not simply to publish a date; Blizzard says a target helps players understand when a project might arrive while giving developers enough time and space to do their best work.

On the official Xbox Podcast published February 13, 2026, Faries said Blizzard teams think about what they want to do next year, five years out, and perhaps ten years out, and work to make those plans fit together. The early announcements therefore also make a broader slate of projects more visible.

Early announcements can invite player feedback
Blizzard has also given a project-specific reason for starting the conversation early. Diablo production lead Rod Fergusson said that discussing Diablo 5 years ahead gives the team time to hear what the community considers important and to prioritize accordingly. He linked that approach to features and quality-of-life improvements players wanted in Diablo 4.
That is a rationale for gathering input, not a promise that every suggestion will make it into the game. An early announcement creates an opportunity for feedback; it does not establish how much influence that feedback will have on the final design.

What the current target years mean
At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard announced target release years for two projects:
Recommended Free Tools
| Project | Target year | What Blizzard said |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo 5 | 2029 | Blizzard presented 2029 as the target release year. |
| New StarCraft project | 2030 | Blizzard presented 2030 as the target release year. |
These are target years, not dates that guarantee a launch. Faries said Blizzard attaches targets with confidence that it can meet them, and StarCraft project lead Dan Hay said his team felt good about the project and wanted to share an early glimpse with a community that had waited a long time. Those comments explain the teams’ stated confidence; they are not independent assessments of schedule risk.
Hay also said that putting the 2030 target visibly in front of the team reinforced its commitment. That describes how the target functions inside the project, not proof that development will remain on schedule.

A target year makes Blizzard’s public plans more legible than a reveal with no timing at all. It also signals that the company believes it has enough long-range planning to name a window. But development plans can change, and a confident target remains a forecast until the game is released.

The interviews establish Blizzard’s stated reasons: coordinated planning, clearer expectations for players, development time, and—in Diablo 5’s case—an early channel for community feedback. They do not establish whether sales goals, investor communication, recruitment, competitive timing, or other internal motives also played a role. Nor do the cited interviews independently estimate the likelihood that either target year will hold.
