Australia called up Nic Maddinson for the opening Test in South Africa after Josh Inglis fractured his right index finger and Cameron Green’s availability was uncertain because of an abdominal strain. The available article text does not identify the “young batsman” named in the headline, so it would be misleading to guess who Australia supposedly overlooked.
Why was Nic Maddinson called up?
Australia added Maddinson and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper to its squad ahead of the South Africa Tests. The ICC reported that Inglis was ruled out of the first Test with a fractured right index finger, while Green’s fitness remained under assessment. The opening match was scheduled to begin in Durban on 9 October 2026. ICC
The two additions addressed different needs. Chief selector George Bailey said Harper provided wicketkeeping cover while Inglis recovered, and Maddinson brought flexibility to the batting order. ABC News

Batting-order flexibility
Cricket Australia reported that selectors wanted a batter who could contribute at the top of the order or in the middle. Maddinson had experience in both roles; Bailey described him as a player who could bat “at the very top of the order … but also can do it in the middle.” Cricket Australia

Expected conditions in Durban
Selectors anticipated spin at Durban and valued Maddinson’s ability against it. Cricket Australia reported his first-class average against spin as 47.97, attributing the figure to CricViz; the report does not state the period covered by that calculation. It also said Cooper Connolly was considered as a possible replacement, but was viewed more as a middle-order prospect. The reporting therefore points to tactical fit and role flexibility, not simply an age-based choice between two batters. Cricket Australia
What form and readiness did Maddinson bring?
Shortly before the call-up, Maddinson scored a one-day hundred for NSW. Cricket Australia described it as his first century in any format since March 2024. The same report said he had been away from first-class cricket for 20 months, making the call-up a return rather than a straightforward continuation of recent Test cricket. Cricket Australia

Maddinson had played three Tests in 2016. His possible return to the XI depended on the selectors’ decision and the squad’s circumstances at the time; being added to the squad did not itself confirm that he would play. The Cricket Australia report also described his treatment for testicular cancer in 2025, including surgery and chemotherapy after the cancer had spread to abdominal lymph nodes and a lung. That history helps explain the unusual length of his absence, but it does not establish his match readiness for a specific Test. Cricket Australia

The accessible version of The West Australian article, published on 3 October 2026 and bylined to Josh Kempton, shows the headline but places the article text behind a subscription prompt. It does not reveal the identity of the younger batter. Other reports mention possible alternatives, including Connolly, but they do not establish that he is the person meant by that headline. Accordingly, the headline’s wording cannot be independently resolved from the available article text. Naming a particular player as the overlooked batsman would go beyond what the accessible reporting establishes.

Harper’s role was explicitly tied to wicketkeeping cover for Inglis, while Maddinson supplied batting options. ABC reported that Harper had scored 677 runs at 35.63 in the previous Sheffield Shield season and had made a century for Australia A against India A. Those figures give context to Harper’s selection, but do not identify the headline’s unnamed young batter. ABC News
