ASUS’s reported reaction to Apple’s MacBook Neo was that a $599 U.S. launch price for a Mac laptop was a shock—and a challenge PC makers were taking seriously. But the remarks come from contemporary media accounts, not a printed ASUS transcript, and those accounts disagree about whether co-CEO S.Y. Hsu or CFO Nick Wu spoke. ASUS’s official investor Q&A points to a webcast rather than reproducing the answer.

What ASUS reportedly said about the MacBook Neo

On March 11, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that ASUS co-CEO S.Y. Hsu called Apple’s unusually affordable launch “certainly a shock to the entire market.” The report also attributed to Hsu the view that the Neo’s 8GB of non-upgradeable memory could constrain some applications, and that the laptop was oriented more toward content consumption.

HotHardware’s same-day account instead attributed the response to ASUS CFO Nick Wu, citing a translated transcript. It reported that ASUS believed the market impact would take time to assess, while also noting that other outlets named Hsu. HotHardware further reported Wu saying PC vendors and upstream suppliers were seriously discussing how to compete with the product across the PC ecosystem. Given the conflicting attributions, these are best understood as reported remarks by an ASUS executive, not a conclusively established verbatim company statement. Tom’s Hardware · HotHardware

ASUS’s official investor Q&A confirms that the company fielded a question about the Mac Neo’s market impact and product strategy, but the document directs readers to webcast 43:42 instead of printing the answer. It therefore does not settle who spoke or provide an official written transcript. ASUS investor Q&A

What Apple launched—and what the $599 figure means

Apple announced MacBook Neo in March 2026 with a U.S. starting launch price of $599 and an education price of $499. Apple described it at launch as its most affordable laptop. These are launch figures, not confirmation of the price or availability at a later date. Apple’s announcement

Apple’s comparison-test notes identify the base configuration as an A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, 8GB of unified memory, and a 256GB SSD. Apple says memory is not upgradeable, a relevant limitation for buyers who expect to run heavier workloads or keep a laptop for many years. The Neo runs macOS Tahoe; Apple highlights built-in apps, iPhone integration, Apple Intelligence, and compatibility with a broad range of third-party apps. Why the launch matters to PC makers

The significance is not simply that Apple announced a low-priced computer. A $599 entry point gives shoppers considering a new laptop a macOS option at a price tier often associated with Windows laptops and Chromebooks. That can put pressure on PC makers to compete on the whole proposition—configuration, software, build, and workload fit—rather than on the operating system or sticker price alone.

The Neo’s 8GB of fixed memory is one clear point of contention. ASUS’s reported concern focuses on whether that configuration suits demanding applications; Apple’s product positioning emphasizes everyday use, built-in software, and its ecosystem. Neither the executive’s characterization of the Neo as mainly for content consumption nor the existence of macOS app compatibility proves how well a particular workload will run. Buyers should judge the exact applications and multitasking they need, rather than treating either statement as a universal capability verdict.

Apple’s performance comparisons also need to be read within their stated scope. Apple says its tests were conducted in January and February 2026 using preproduction Neo systems and production Intel Core Ultra 5-based PCs, each with 8GB memory and 256GB SSD, and that results reflect specific systems and approximate performance. Those are Apple’s comparisons under specified conditions, not independent results or a general verdict on every competing laptop. Apple’s product and comparison-test notes

What to compare before choosing a budget laptop

Decision point What to check Why it matters
Memory and storage Installed RAM, whether it can be upgraded, and SSD capacity. The Neo’s listed base configuration has 8GB unified memory and 256GB storage; memory is not upgradeable.
Workload Your actual apps, number of simultaneous tasks, and any specialized or professional software. General browsing and media use differ from demanding multitasking or application-specific work; fit depends on the software and configuration.
Software ecosystem macOS and Apple-device integration versus Windows or ChromeOS and your existing tools. Switching platforms can affect app availability, file workflows, peripherals, and how easily devices work together.
Display and build The specific competing model’s screen, construction, ports, and configuration at a comparable price. There is no single quality level shared by all budget laptops, so compare actual models rather than broad categories.
Price and availability Current local price, configuration, and stock at the time you buy. Apple’s $599 general and $499 education prices are U.S. launch figures from March 2026, not verified current offers.

Port selection is another practical detail: Apple lists two USB-C ports, USB 3 on the left and USB 2 on the right. External display support is available only through the left USB 3 port. Buyers who regularly connect a monitor or peripherals should account for that when comparing specific alternatives. Apple MacBook Neo specifications

The wider market signal—and its limits

MacRumors reported that IDC forecast an 11.3% decline in global PC shipments for 2026 and revised its notebook forecast upward after stronger-than-expected MacBook Neo demand. That figure is a forecast relayed secondhand, not a directly reviewed IDC publication, and the report does not establish that the Neo alone caused the forecast change. It offers market context, not proof of a specific competitive outcome. MacRumors’ account of the IDC outlook
