Start by identifying what is actually slow: the whole device, one app, internet activity, startup, or battery runtime. Then check storage, resource use, updates, background activity, temperature, and battery condition on the affected device. The right fix depends on the symptom and operating system; a single cleanup checklist will not improve every device.

Is the whole device slow, or just one task?

A slow webpage may point to a weak or congested connection rather than a slow computer or phone. Apple notes that network congestion or reconnecting to cell towers can make an iPhone or iPad seem slow; Google separates connection problems from Android phone and app problems. If only one app misbehaves, troubleshoot that app before changing system-wide settings. If the slowdown affects menus, several apps, or basic actions, check the device itself.

  • Only internet tasks are slow: Test another site or app and check whether other devices on the same connection have the same problem.
  • One app is slow or unresponsive: Close and reopen that app, check for an update, and see whether the rest of the device responds normally.
  • The whole device lags: Check storage and resource use, then review updates, background activity, heat, and battery condition.
  • Battery runtime is the main concern: Battery-saving settings may help runtime while reducing performance or background activity; they are not performance boosts.

How can you find what is using storage or system resources?

Low free storage and resource-heavy apps can contribute to sluggishness. Start with the built-in tools for your operating system, and remove only items you recognize and no longer need.

Windows PC

Open Task Manager and inspect Processes for apps using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources. Use Performance to see resource use over time and Startup apps to review programs that launch with Windows. Close apps you are not using and disable startup entries only when you understand what they do and do not need them to launch automatically. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs among possible reasons for poor performance.

Mac

Open System Settings > General > Storage to review storage use and available recommendations. Open Activity Monitor to inspect memory use and identify apps consuming resources. If you suspect a disk problem, use Disk Utility to check it. If the startup disk needs space, move files to another disk or external storage; doing so frees internal storage but is not a direct upgrade to the Mac’s processor or memory.

iPhone or iPad

Open Settings > General > [device] Storage to see how space is used and review recommendations. Apple’s guidance, published September 30, 2026, recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free storage to avoid slowdowns on iPhone and iPad; this is Apple’s device-specific advice, not a threshold for other platforms. You can offload an app to free the app’s storage while keeping its documents and data, or delete it to remove its related data.

Do not force-close every app as routine maintenance. Apple says reopening apps that were closed unnecessarily can take longer because their data must load again. Close an app if it is unresponsive or causing a problem.

Android phone or tablet

Check storage in Settings; the exact location varies by device maker and Android version. Google Android Help says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as Google’s troubleshooting guidance, not a universal cutoff or a promise that freeing space alone will resolve lag.

Chromebook

Open storage management to review space used by downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android apps, and user accounts. Remove files or apps you no longer need, or move files to Google Drive. If memory pressure seems more likely than storage pressure, close unused tabs, apps, or extensions and use the Chromebook Diagnostics app to investigate CPU or memory concerns.

Which software steps are worth trying?

After checking storage and resource use, install relevant system and app updates, restart the device, and assess whether the symptom changes. On Windows, Microsoft also recommends checking appropriate optional driver updates and scanning for malware. A restart can help when closing an unneeded app has not resolved the problem; it is not a substitute for diagnosing a recurring slowdown.

Windows: reduce unnecessary startup and background work

Use Task Manager’s Startup apps view to review high-impact entries, rather than disabling every startup task. On supported Windows 11 apps, Power optimized is Microsoft’s recommended background setting. Setting an app to Never prevents its background activity, but also stops that app’s notifications and updates, so reserve it for apps where that trade-off is acceptable.

Android: test whether a downloaded app is involved

Google’s Android troubleshooting workflow recommends restarting, checking Android and app updates, and closing unused apps. If the problem continues, start the device in Safe Mode and check whether the slowdown remains. If it goes away in Safe Mode, a downloaded app may be involved; remove recently installed apps one at a time and test after each removal.

A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine speed-up. Back up the device first: resetting deletes local apps and their data. Settings and Safe Mode instructions vary across Android devices; if the manufacturer uses a customized version or the steps do not match your device, consult its support guidance.

Chromebook: update and isolate resource pressure

Install system updates, then use Diagnostics to investigate CPU or memory problems if the slowdown persists. Close unused tabs, apps, or extensions when memory use appears to be the issue.

Could power settings, heat, or battery condition explain the lag?

Performance, battery runtime, temperature, and background activity can pull in different directions. Choose settings based on the task rather than leaving every device in its most restrictive or most demanding mode.

Setting or condition What it favors Trade-off to consider
Windows Best performance power mode Performance headroom when maximum performance matters Can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make it warmer; Microsoft recommends reserving it for situations where power is available.
Windows background setting Never Less background activity for the selected app That app will not provide background notifications or updates.
Apple Low Power Mode Battery conservation Reduces performance and animations and limits background work.

On iPhone and iPad, Apple says extreme heat or cold can slow performance and recommends using the device at a more moderate temperature. Rechargeable batteries also lose capacity and peak performance over time. Check battery health in the operating system; if it recommends replacement, consider service rather than expecting storage cleanup or app changes to restore battery performance.

Android battery-saving advice is intended to extend runtime, not to make the device faster. If responsiveness is your priority, check whether a power-saving mode is active and consider its battery-life trade-off before changing it.

When should you repair or replace the device?

Consider service when built-in battery health or hardware diagnostics point to a problem, or when a specific hardware issue persists after software troubleshooting. Compare the likely service cost with the device’s age, supported software lifetime, and whether its hardware can meet your needs. The cited support guidance establishes that worn batteries and older hardware can limit performance, but it does not establish a universal repair price or benchmark for deciding when replacement is better.

If the device remains slow after you have checked the symptom, storage, resource use, updates, background activity, and relevant power or temperature factors, further cleanup may have diminishing returns. Microsoft cautions that older PCs may not see significant improvements from software steps; an upgrade may be the better long-term option when hardware no longer meets the work you need it to do.
