A blurry video in iMessage usually comes from one of four things: the message traveled as a green-bubble SMS, MMS, or RCS message instead of iMessage, the sender’s iPhone compressed the attachment, a Low Data Mode or low-quality preview setting limited what arrived, or the video was exported at a lower resolution before it was sent. iMessage itself supports high-resolution photos and videos, so start by checking which route the message took.

Step one: check whether the message is iMessage or a different message type

The bubble color tells you the route. A blue bubble means the message was sent as iMessage. A green bubble means it was sent as SMS, MMS, or RCS. Those formats are handled by your carrier and the receiving device, and their attachment capabilities and availability vary. If the conversation is green, the video may be reaching the other person through a path that was never designed for large, high-resolution media, so the blur may come from the route rather than from iMessage.

Check this before you change any settings. A video that looks soft in a green-bubble thread can look correct when the same clip is sent in a blue-bubble conversation.

Why iPhone compresses some attachments

Apple’s Messages guide, “Take and edit photos or videos in Messages on iPhone,” states: “Your carrier may set size limits for attachments; iPhone may compress photo and video attachments when necessary.” The guide does not name an individual speaker, and it does not publish a fixed compression ratio, a maximum video resolution for iMessage, or a size threshold that applies to every video.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a carrier limit can force compression even in a blue-bubble conversation, because the attachment must fit the constraints of the path it travels. Second, there is no exact number you can check a received file against to confirm how much was removed. If the video looks soft, the honest answer is that compression may have occurred, not that a specific percentage was applied.

Low Data Mode and the low-quality preview setting

Sometimes the recipient does not see the full video at all, only a small preview. Apple’s documentation describes a setting called Send Low Quality Photo Previews, found on the sender’s device at Settings > Apps > Messages. Apple says that when Low Data Mode is on, only the preview is sent in the documented setting context.

  1. Wait for the full media to arrive. Large files can take time to download, especially on a weak cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
  2. On the sender’s iPhone, confirm the Low Data Mode state for the active Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and check the Send Low Quality Photo Previews setting at Settings > Apps > Messages.

Long videos and the sharing alternatives Apple lists

For long clips, Apple lists three alternatives to sending the video directly in a message thread: AirDrop, iCloud, and Mail Drop. Each one trades off differently, and none of the sources establish that every method preserves identical quality in all circumstances. Compare them on the factors that matter for your situation:

Method Best for Recipient requirements Limits to consider
AirDrop Nearby devices, where both people can be in the same place The recipient must be close enough for AirDrop, which uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and must accept the transfer Works only at short range; not suited to remote recipients
iCloud link Remote recipients who need a shareable link The recipient needs access to the link; the sharing setup depends on your iCloud account Subject to your iCloud storage and sharing settings; check privacy before sharing a link widely
Mail Drop Remote recipients using email for a large file The recipient receives the file through email access Suited to larger files than a standard message attachment; check your mail setup and the recipient’s access

Choose AirDrop when the recipient is with you. Choose a link-based option when the recipient is elsewhere and needs to view or download the clip later.

Why compressing the video yourself does not make it sharper

Some people export a smaller copy before sending to avoid compression. This can help a file fit a limit, but it works against sharpness. Apple’s “Compress a video on iPhone” guide gives approximate sizes for a one-minute export, and these examples show how much the file shrinks at each resolution:

Rank #4
Apple iPhone 16e, 128GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, 800 nits (HBM), 1200 nits (peak), 2532x1170px at 460ppi, 4005mAh Battery
  • 8GB RAM, Apple A18 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency cores), Apple GPU 4-core, 16‑core Neural Engine
  • Rear camera: 48MP, f/1.6, wide, Front Camera: 12MP, f/1.9, wide, iOS 18.3.1, upgradable to iOS 18.5
  • Connectivity: Global 4G LTE, Sub-6 GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C, Wireless Charging (7.5W). (does not have mmWave 5G or MagSafe or physical SIM card) - Dual eSIM Only
  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.
Export resolution (one minute) Approximate file size per Apple
1080p (default iPhone camera and iMovie export settings) 70–105 MB
720p 19–27 MB
540p 12–16 MB
360p 6–9 MB

These are Apple’s approximate examples for a one-minute clip, not measured results for every video. Apple states that a lower-resolution export can reduce video quality. A smaller file is therefore a trade: it may send more easily, but it will look softer. If the goal is a sharp copy, avoid lowering the export resolution, and use a sharing method that does not force a size reduction.

A troubleshooting sequence

Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a common cause before you move to the next.

  1. Confirm the route. Is the message blue or green? If it is green, the video is traveling as SMS, MMS, or RCS, and the blur may come from that path.
  2. Check the sender’s preview and data settings. Look at Settings > Apps > Messages for Send Low Quality Photo Previews, and confirm whether Low Data Mode is active on the connection in use.
  3. Check the file size. If the original is long or large, use AirDrop for a nearby recipient, or iCloud or Mail Drop for a remote one, rather than sending it through the message thread.
  4. Ask how the video was exported. If the sender lowered the export resolution to reduce file size, the lost detail happened before the message was sent, and no receiving setting can restore it.
  5. Compare the original with the copy you received. Open the original video in Photos on the sender’s iPhone and compare it with the copy on the recipient’s device. If the original already looks soft, the blur was present before sending. If the original is sharp and the received copy is not, compression or a preview is the more likely cause. Apple’s guide confirms that compression may occur, but it does not describe a guaranteed diagnostic test.

What you can and cannot control

You can control the message route, the sender’s preview and data settings, the export resolution, and the sharing method. You cannot control a carrier’s attachment limit, and you cannot see the exact compression applied to a particular file. For the sharpest result, send from a blue-bubble conversation, leave the export at its original resolution, and use AirDrop or a link-based option when the file is large.

If you need the exact size limit for your carrier, check with your carrier directly, since Apple’s material does not set a universal limit.
