French high-school students are protesting what they describe as understaffed schools, deteriorating facilities, crowded classes, long days and problems with the higher-education application system. The demonstrations spread from the Paris region to schools around the country. Some sites saw clashes and damage; others were the setting for students seeking changes to school conditions. The latest reported figures available here are dated October 2, 2026, and do not establish the situation on October 3.

Why are students protesting?

Students interviewed by news organizations described shortages of teachers and other staff, worn or inadequate school buildings, crowded classes, demanding schedules and dissatisfaction with the higher-education application process. Those accounts help explain the protests, but they are testimony from students—not a comprehensive national audit of school staffing or conditions.

The demonstrations began at schools in the Paris region during the week before September 30, then spread to other cities. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne called for protests to extend nationwide alongside a broader public-sector strike.

AFP quoted Juan, a student at Montbello high school in Lille, saying: “We don’t condone vandalism; we came to defend our rights because we have horrendous schedules — we work 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and that’s not right,” His statement describes his position, not necessarily that of every student involved.

How many schools were affected or closed?

The reported figures count different kinds of disruption on different dates. “Affected” can include strikes or protests, not just blockades or confirmed closures. Neither figure should be read as a count of schools closed for the entire day.

Date and reporting source Reported school impact What the number describes
October 1, 2026; French Ministry of Education figures reported by Le Monde More than 1,020 high schools affected; 222 blockades Schools affected by strikes or protests, with blockades listed separately
By early afternoon October 2, 2026; ministry figure reported by the Associated Press 560 schools affected A snapshot of schools impacted by protests; the report does not make this directly interchangeable with the October 1 count

The counts are not a consistent day-to-day series, and the October 2 figure does not establish that disruption had fallen from the previous day: the dates, timing and descriptions differ. The available reports do not establish a separate verified national total for schools closed on October 3.

Who was injured, and what do the figures cover?

On October 2, Education Minister Édouard Geffray was reported as saying that 170 students and 65 education staff had been injured since the movement began. Separately, the Interior Ministry reported 305 police officers injured on October 1 alone, according to the Associated Press on October 2. These are different populations and time windows; they should not be combined as if they were one count for one day.

The Associated Press also reported more than 1,900 arrests on October 1, citing the Interior Ministry. That is an arrest figure for that date, not a count of people injured or a measure of how many students took part in demonstrations.

Were the protests peaceful or violent?

Reports describe varied actions. Some students protested school conditions or took part in blockades; at some locations, clashes, fires, vandalism and projectiles were reported. Police used tear gas and other crowd-control measures. Those incidents do not mean every demonstration or participant was violent.

Accounts from Lille, including Juan’s remarks to AFP, show that some students explicitly distanced themselves from vandalism while arguing for better conditions. The reports describe a movement spanning many schools, so conduct at one site should not be generalized to all participants.

What has the government done?

As the unrest spread, the prime minister convened a crisis meeting. Authorities said police should clear blockades that prevented access to schools and act against violence and vandalism. Education Minister Geffray said that remote classes should be used where blockades or damage made it unsafe to receive students in person. He also said, as quoted by the Associated Press, “Violence will not deprive our students of their fundamental right to education,” and, in AFP reporting, “It is imperative that our students be able to return to class -—especially those who are currently prevented from doing so,”

The unrest also became part of political debate amid discussion of the proposed 2027 budget and the approaching presidential campaign. Political claims about responsibility for the unrest are distinct from the reported student grievances and incident counts.

What is known as of October 3?

The latest reporting summarized here describes events and official figures through October 2, 2026. It supports an account of nationwide school disruption, varied student demands, injuries in several groups and government efforts to restore access to classes. It does not verify the number of schools closed, the scale of protests or the injury toll specifically on October 3.
