Rear-wheel drive (RWD) has become far less common in U.S. vehicle production: its share fell from more than 91% in model year 1975 to about 10% in model year 2024. The main reason is not a single industry-wide decision to eliminate it. The market shifted toward front-wheel-drive cars, then increasingly toward SUVs and pickups, many of which use all-wheel or four-wheel drive. Automakers’ modular-platform plans also emphasize cost and manufacturing scale, but the available evidence does not show a specific cost penalty for RWD.
What changed in the drivetrain mix?
The clearest measure is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s production data, which track the share of new vehicles built with each drivetrain. The trend is substantial, but it is not a simple swap from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive.
| Drivetrain | Model year 1975 | Model year 1990 | Model year 2009 | Model year 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rear-wheel drive | More than 91% | Not stated (EPA report) | Not stated (EPA report) | About 10% |
| Front-wheel drive | 5% | 64% | 63% | 29% |
| Four-wheel drive | 3% | Not stated (EPA report) | Not stated (EPA report) | 63% |
Shares are of U.S. new-vehicle production, as reported by the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026. The figures describe the U.S. production mix, not global sales, and say nothing by themselves about how many models or trims each brand offers.
Why RWD lost ground
Front-wheel drive became common in mass-market cars
Front-wheel drive (FWD) brings the engine and driven wheels together at the front of a vehicle. That layout supports compact packaging and became common in mass-market cars. EPA data show FWD rising from 5% of U.S. production in model year 1975 to a peak of 64% in 1990. The data establish the change in adoption; they do not quantify a precise cost, weight, or efficiency advantage over RWD.
#1 Best Overall
- QUALITY MATERIAL: These wheels are extremely durable and heavy duty. Glide to the finish line with ease.
- AXLE HOLE. The 1/8-inch diameter axle fits perfectly inside the GT-RX wheel and extends through, making it a good choice for a shell dragster.
- DESIGNED FOR STYLE. Designed with style in mind, these six-spoke GT-RX Wheels are flashy and cool and will make your model car look and drive to perfection.
- MATERIALS FOR THE WHOLE CLASS. This pack comes in bulk with 100 wheels, allowing for several vehicle builds.
- VEHICLE BUILDING PROJECTS. Build model cars or dragsters using these GT-FX wheels. Teach STEM education while enjoying the thrill of making and racing vehicles.
SUVs and pickups grew, bringing more AWD and 4WD
Today’s shift is also about what kinds of vehicles people buy and automakers build. Truck SUVs made up almost 50% of U.S. new-vehicle production in model year 2024, while all SUVs together represented 60%. The truck regulatory class reached a record 66% of production that year. The EPA links the growth of truck-class vehicles, where four-wheel drive is prevalent, to the rising four-wheel-drive share. As a result, RWD’s decline is not simply FWD taking its place.
Platforms are designed to serve more models
Automakers seek platforms that can support multiple vehicles and powertrains while managing cost and complexity. Ford describes its future electric-vehicle platform in terms of simplicity, cost, efficiency, and integrated design. Ford Chief EV, Digital and Design Officer Doug Field summarized one engineering principle this way: “Physics is not proprietary.” Ford’s August 2025 platform article describes the company’s own strategy; it is not a direct comparison of RWD and FWD costs.

Stellantis says its announced modular STLA One architecture is intended to reduce complexity and serve more models. Those are company-stated goals for its future platform plan, not evidence that RWD itself is the target of savings. Stellantis announced the plan in May 2026.
Does the shift mean EVs have to be front-wheel drive?
No. An electric vehicle can drive the front axle, the rear axle, or both, depending on motor placement and vehicle design. Nissan’s 2019 IMs concept used motors at both axles for all-wheel drive. Nissan design executive Alfonso Albaisa said electric-vehicle technology let designers move beyond traditional packaging rules. The IMs was a concept, however, not proof of today’s production mix or a forecast that one layout will dominate. Nissan’s announcement presents it as an example of design flexibility.

Where RWD remains available
RWD has not disappeared. The EPA says current RWD production is concentrated in performance-oriented sedans and wagons, as well as pickups, with examples in other vehicle types too. Availability depends on the model, trim, and model year, so a drivetrain that appears in one version may not be offered across the whole lineup.

- Brand new box. Real rubber tires. True-to-scale detail. Custom and competition. Officially licensed product. Cement required (not included). Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Two sets of 4 tires in sizes F60-15 and L60-15. Diameter of wheels approximately: 1-1.125 inches.
- Vehicle purpose and body style: A sports sedan, family car, pickup, crossover, and SUV may prioritize different things.
- Traction needs: Consider your usual weather, roads, and tires, and whether front, rear, or all wheels being driven fits those conditions.
- Powertrain and packaging: Check whether the vehicle is combustion-powered, hybrid, or electric, along with motor or engine placement and cabin and cargo layout.
- Trim and ownership cost: Confirm which drivetrains are available with the trim you want and compare purchase and ownership costs.
- Driving behavior: Evaluate steering, acceleration, towing, and handling for the specific model rather than assuming a drivetrain label guarantees a particular result.
Check the automaker’s current model-year specifications, since drivetrain availability can change.
