Most blurry GoPro footage has one of three causes: motion blur from a slow shutter in low light, electronic stabilization that makes that motion blur look unnatural, or a dirty, damaged, or impact-affected lens. Which one applies depends on whether you are shooting still photos or video, and on what the blur looks like. Work through the checks below before changing settings or buying accessories.
Start by identifying the type of blur
“Pictures” can mean still photos or video, and the fixes differ. Stabilization settings are a video feature, so advice about them does not apply to a blurry still photo. Note these details before you start:
- Still or video: Check the file type in your media library or the capture mode you used.
- Blur pattern: Does only moving subjects smear, or is the whole frame soft even when the camera is still? Does the softness appear in every clip, or only in dim scenes?
- Light level: Was the scene dim, such as indoors, at dusk, or in shade?
- History: Did the camera get dropped, knocked, or exposed to a hard impact before the softness appeared?
- Model and firmware: Look up the exact model name and the firmware version in the GoPro app or the camera’s settings menu. Many controls differ between models.
- Accessories: Is a protective cover or filter fitted?
Those answers point to one of the sections below. Motion smear in dim light points to exposure. Softness across the whole frame, even in bright light, points to the lens or to damage.
Check the lens and any cover
A dirty or scratched lens cover can soften every shot, and it is the cheapest possibility to rule out.

- Power the camera off and inspect the lens and any protective cover in good light. Look for fingerprints, dust, water spots, scratches, and cracks.
- Clean the cover with a soft, lint-free cloth and, if needed, a cleaning method from your model’s care guide. Avoid harsh solvents or abrasive cloths.
- Remove the cover if it is removable and test again without it. Use a cover only if it is designed for your exact model.
- Let the camera come to room temperature if it was moved from cold to warm conditions. Condensation can cause haze that looks like softness.
- Photograph a detailed, stationary subject, such as printed text or a textured surface, in bright daylight. Hold the camera or mount it on something rigid. View the original file at full size on a computer, not only the small preview in the app.
If the image is sharp in bright light after cleaning, the problem is almost certainly exposure or stabilization, not the optics. If it is still soft in bright light, especially after a drop, go to the damage section below.
Fix motion blur in low light
Blur that appears only with movement in dim scenes usually comes from a long shutter time. In low light the camera keeps the shutter open longer to collect enough light, so anything moving smears. GoPro’s Image Quality Lead, Alex Cashman, explained this in a 2018 GoPro article about HERO7 Black, stating: “Motion blur,” which is caused by long shutter times in lowlight, causes strange results once the footage is stabilized.
Why stabilization makes it worse
Electronic image stabilization (EIS) compensates for camera movement, but it cannot remove the blur already recorded in each frame. The result can look odd: the frame is steadied while the motion inside it stays smeared, which can make the blur seem to wobble or ripple. GoPro’s guidance says that turning EIS off is often the remedy in low light, although newer models behave differently and their controls vary.

Exposure options and their trade-offs
GoPro’s HERO7 Black guidance lists these options for dim scenes. Menu names and availability change by model and firmware, so confirm each one on your camera before relying on it.
- Raise the maximum ISO above the default. On HERO7 Black the cited default was 1600. A higher ceiling lets the camera use a faster shutter, at the cost of more noise.
- Shorten the shutter time manually, if your model allows it. Faster shutter means less blur per frame but needs more light or higher ISO.
- Disable Auto Low Light and/or raise the frame rate. A higher frame rate limits how long each frame can be exposed.
- Lower EV. This darkens the image, which can offset a brighter exposure from the other settings.
GoPro states the trade-off directly: “Each of these approaches has trade-offs, such as increased noise or darker exposures, so we encourage you to explore which settings work best for your situation.” Change one setting at a time and shoot the same scene after each change, so you can see which adjustment helped.
Advanced settings through GoPro Labs
GoPro Labs exposes additional shutter, ISO, EIS, and sharpness controls that depend on the model. GoPro’s settings-command reference, checked in October 2026, notes that higher shutter speeds need adequate light, higher ISO, or both. Labs commands are unofficial and can change or be removed with firmware updates. Confirm that a command is supported on your model before using it, and understand the exposure cost before you rely on it for a shoot.

Understand the stabilization settings
On the HERO10 Black, HyperSmooth is the video stabilization feature. It corrects camera shake by cropping the video frame, so stronger stabilization means a tighter crop. The HERO10 Black user manual, published in 2021, lists four settings:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| HyperSmooth setting | What GoPro describes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Boost | Maximum stabilization | Tightest crop |
| High | Maximum stabilization | Crop applied, less than Boost |
| Standard | Reduced stabilization | Less crop, less steadiness |
| Off | No stabilization and no crop | Motion is unsteadied; no crop |
HyperSmooth does not sharpen a still image or fix exposure blur. If your video looks smeared during fast movement, the setting is only one part of the picture; the shutter time recorded in each frame still matters.
Still photos on the HERO10 Black
For HERO10 Black still photos, the manual describes SuperPhoto, which analyzes the scene and may apply HDR, multi-frame noise reduction, or standard processing. The manual says HDR combines several photos and suits high-contrast scenes with little movement. SuperPhoto processing can take longer, so a moving subject can look different from the scene you framed. SuperPhoto is not a general correction for blur: it cannot make a moving subject sharp, and it does not replace a fast enough shutter.

For a moving subject in a still photo, use a brighter scene or a higher ISO ceiling so the camera can use a shorter shutter time, and check your model’s shutter options.

GoPro states that a hard impact can cause permanent focus or stabilization problems. A camera that was dropped and then became soft everywhere, including in bright light and with a clean lens, may have internal damage. Settings will not repair that.

Model differences matter
Do not apply one model’s controls to another. GoPro’s MISSION 1 PRO ILS field guide, published in September 2026, describes that interchangeable-lens camera as manual focus with no autofocus. That is specific to the MISSION 1 PRO ILS and should not be assumed for other GoPro cameras. Most GoPro guidance does not specify a focus distance for every model, so check the manual for yours before setting focus expectations.
Accessories that will not fix motion blur
An ND filter reduces the light reaching the sensor, which can lengthen exposure time and make motion blur worse in dim scenes. Do not buy one as a sharpness fix. A tripod or additional light can help a still-scene setup, but they are only useful if you have a specific scene and camera in mind. A new camera is a last resort, after cleaning, exposure adjustment, and damage checks have failed.
