U.S. diesel prices are rising because crude oil is expensive and global supplies of distillate fuel—the broader product family that includes diesel—are tight. Refining chemistry helps explain how crude becomes saleable diesel and why different petroleum products can have different prices, but it is not a single chemical reaction driving the current increase. Retail prices also reflect refining margins, inventories, trade, transport, retailer costs and taxes.

What goes into the price of diesel?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes the price of distillate fuel oil, often sold as diesel, as a combination of crude oil costs, crack spreads, retail margins, distribution costs and taxes. Each component reflects a different stage between crude production and the price shown at a pump. EIA’s explanation of diesel prices distinguishes those components.

  • Crude oil: The main raw-material cost for petroleum fuels.
  • Crack spread: A measure of the value of refined products relative to the crude used to make them; EIA uses it as an indicator of refining margins.
  • Distribution and retail: Costs and margins involved in moving fuel to stations and selling it.
  • Taxes: Taxes add to the retail price and vary by location.

A higher crude price can lift diesel costs, but the change at the pump need not match the change in crude. If diesel becomes more expensive relative to crude, a wider diesel crack spread can add pressure to the wholesale product price. Retail distribution, margins and taxes then contribute to the final price.

How high is the latest reported U.S. average?

EIA reported a U.S. retail diesel average of $6.29 per gallon on September 14, 2026. At the time, it was the highest nominal level in EIA’s series, which began in 1994, and the highest inflation-adjusted level since 2022. This is a dated weekly national average—not a live quote, a forecast or the price in every state. EIA’s September 18, 2026 analysis gives the context for the figure.

Why can prices rise when U.S. refineries are producing a lot?

Production is a flow: it measures how much fuel refineries make over a period. Inventory is a stock: it measures how much fuel is available in storage at a point in time. Strong production does not guarantee that stocks will be ample if demand and exports absorb fuel faster than it can accumulate.

  • U.S. distillate production averaged 5.1 million barrels per day from January through August 2026, the highest average for that period since 2019.
  • U.S. refinery utilization was 97% for the week ending September 11, 2026, near its maximum.
  • Yet distillate inventories were 15.8 million barrels for the week ending September 11, 2026, 13% below the 2021–2025 seasonal average.

These figures describe different things and periods: the production figure is an eight-month average, while utilization and inventories are weekly readings. Taken together, they show why high output alone does not prove that the domestic market has a comfortable supply cushion. EIA’s September 2026 account connects low inventories with high U.S. net exports and tight global distillate markets. EIA’s Petroleum & Other Liquids data portal provides weekly petroleum data.

Why do overseas supply and trade affect U.S. diesel?

Diesel and other distillates are traded internationally. EIA says reduced distillate production abroad has raised international prices and the cost of imports, while also increasing demand for U.S. exports. When more U.S. fuel goes abroad and stocks at home are already low, the domestic market has less inventory to absorb supply disruptions or demand swings.

This does not mean exports alone caused the price rise. The reported picture combines elevated crude prices, weaker overseas refining activity, strong U.S. net exports and low inventories. U.S. refineries were producing at a high rate, but a tight global market can still make available fuel more valuable.

What does chemistry explain—and what does it not?

Diesel is a refined petroleum product in the distillate family. A refinery processes crude into multiple products; the amount and mix of saleable products depend on the crude, refinery equipment and operating choices. Further processing and blending help produce fuels that meet specifications, including limits on sulfur content. These requirements are part of why crude oil does not convert into a fixed quantity of identical, ready-to-sell diesel.

That chemistry and processing explain the product and its production economics, not the whole cause of today’s price movement. EIA’s September 2026 explanation points to high crude costs and tight distillate supply. It does not identify a single chemical reaction, or sulfur treatment by itself, as the cause of the increase. Also, “distillate” is broader than on-highway diesel: EIA uses distillate data when discussing diesel, but the categories are not interchangeable in every context. EIA’s petroleum product price methodology discusses how product prices are analyzed.

What could happen during fall and beyond?

EIA’s September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook described two seasonal pressures: refinery maintenance tends to reduce distillate production in fall, while harvest activity increases agricultural demand. It forecast average U.S. diesel crack spreads above $2 per gallon from August through November 2026, then declining through mid-2027 as overseas supply normalizes and tanker flows improve. This was a conditional forecast for crack spreads—a wholesale product-to-crude measure—not a promise about retail pump prices. The outlook depends on assumptions about international supply and shipping. Read the September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook for its stated assumptions.

How to read a diesel-price explanation

When evaluating a claim about rising diesel prices, check that it compares like with like and identifies the date and geography. A national retail average is not the same measure as a wholesale crack spread, and a snapshot of inventory is not the same as a production average.
