Deleted messages can still appear on a MacBook because Messages first puts them in Recently Deleted, where they can be recovered for a limited time. A message may also remain visible on another Apple device if Messages in iCloud is off, the devices use different Apple Accounts, or syncing has not finished. Deleting a message from your conversation does not delete the recipient’s copy.
Where deleted messages go on Mac
In Messages, deletion first moves a message or conversation to Recently Deleted. This is an expected holding area, not necessarily a sign that deletion failed. Apple says deleted items can be recovered there for up to 30 days.
To check, open Messages and choose View > Recently Deleted. Select the conversation and click Recover to restore it. To remove an item from that folder immediately, select it there and choose Delete.

Apple’s Mac Messages guide describes two retention milestones: deleted messages are removed from the user’s devices after 30 days and permanently deleted from iCloud after 40 days. These are Apple’s stated limits; they are not a promise that a message can be recovered after the 30-day recovery period. Apple Support: Delete messages and conversations in Messages on Mac.

Why a message can still appear on another Apple device
Messages in iCloud keeps a user’s messages up to date across devices. For that syncing to work, each device must use the same Apple Account and have Messages in iCloud enabled. If either condition is missing, one device may show an older view. Apple notes that a device not signed in to the Apple Account, or with Messages in iCloud turned off, will not be kept up to date. Apple Support: Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices.
Check the account and iCloud setting
- Confirm that the Mac and the other Apple device are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Make sure Messages in iCloud is enabled on both devices.
Give syncing time, then try Sync Now
Initial Messages in iCloud setup can take time. On Mac, open Messages > Settings > iMessage and click Sync Now if that option is available. If the devices still do not match, check Apple’s system requirements and software-update guidance. Apple Support: Change iMessage settings in Messages on Mac.

Deleting your copy does not erase the recipient’s copy
Ordinary deletion changes your own conversation. It does not remove the message from the other person’s device. Messages in iCloud synchronizes your own Apple devices; it does not retract a message from its recipient.
Undo Send is different. Apple says eligible messages can be unsent within two minutes, and messages removed using Undo Send are permanently deleted through that action. This feature is not the same as deleting a conversation from your Mac. Apple distinguishes blue-bubble iMessage from green-bubble SMS/MMS; SMS messages cannot be unsent. What to do based on where the message appears
- It appears in Recently Deleted: Recover it if you want it back, or select it there and choose Delete for immediate removal from that folder.
- It appears in the normal conversation list on only one device: Check the Apple Account and Messages in iCloud setting on both devices, then allow time for syncing and use Sync Now on Mac if available.
- You deleted it but the recipient still has it: That is expected for ordinary deletion. Only eligible Undo Send messages can be unsent, within Apple’s two-minute window.
- An audio message expired before you saved it: Apple says it cannot be recovered.
Apple’s documentation describes these visible Messages and iCloud behaviors; it does not establish that leftover database files explain a message still shown in the Messages app. Nor does it support a promise that a third-party utility can restore an item after Apple’s stated retention window.
