Apple should make Find My a more consistent part of the products it makes—but that does not mean putting identical tracking hardware in every device. Find My already covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods, AirTag and compatible third-party items. The gap is that available features differ by product, and some useful products have no documented Find My support.
What Find My covers today
Apple’s Find My overview lists iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods, AirTag and compatible products. These are not interchangeable implementations: Apple’s feature table shows that the actions available in Find My depend on the device or item, and availability can vary by country or region.
For iPhone and iPad, Apple lists location viewing, playing a sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, notifications and Activation Lock. Macs have a similar set of core options, while “Notify When Left Behind” is listed only for Apple silicon MacBooks. Apple Watch has location viewing, sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, “Notify When Found” and Activation Lock. Apple Vision Pro is listed for Activation Lock. AirPods models, AirTag, Apple Pencil Pro, iPhone Wallet with MagSafe and third-party items each have narrower or different combinations. Consult Apple’s Find My feature availability table for the product and region in question.
That distinction matters: “supports Find My” can mean different things. A product might show a location, play a sound, support a lost-item mode, or have an anti-theft lock; readers should not assume every compatible item offers all those functions.

Why broader, more consistent support would help
People lose more than phones. A location feature is useful when an item is portable, valuable or frequently misplaced—and when locating it is technically practical. Apple should assess product categories against those needs instead of treating Find My as a feature reserved for a short list of devices.
More consistent support could also make the ecosystem easier to understand. A buyer should be able to check a clear, product-specific list of what happens if an item is lost: whether its location appears, whether it can make a sound, whether it can be marked lost, and what protections apply. That is a stronger promise than a vague label implying every product is findable in the same way.

There are already distinct approaches in the ecosystem. Apple devices can have device-level Find My features; AirTag is a dedicated item-finding product; and third-party products can be compatible with Find My. Apple’s AirTag (2nd generation) setup requirements specify iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later, illustrating why compatibility details should be stated precisely and kept current.
What an expanded Find My plan should consider
- Usefulness: Prioritize products people commonly carry, misplace or need to recover, rather than adding location to objects where it would solve little.
- Technical fit: Some products may be able to participate through existing connectivity; others could require different hardware or a separate accessory. The available Apple documentation does not establish feasibility for every product.
- Size, battery and cost: Any added components can raise practical questions about dimensions, power and price. These are design trade-offs to evaluate, not documented costs or measured effects for specific Apple products.
- Recovery actions: State exactly which capabilities a product supports—such as location, sound, Lost Mode, alerts or Activation Lock—and avoid implying that one product’s feature set applies to another.
- Privacy and safety: Build in unwanted-tracking detection and clear consent protections from the start, not as an afterthought.
- Availability: Identify country or region limits and the minimum software version wherever they affect setup or use.
Offline finding is useful, but not a universal guarantee
Apple says the Find My network can use nearby Apple devices and Bluetooth to detect supported missing devices or items and relay an approximate location. Apple describes this process as anonymous and encrypted. It says the network includes over a billion Apple devices; that is Apple’s own description of scale, not an independently measured count. Some iPhones can continue reporting their location for up to 24 hours after being turned off or when the battery is low, according to Apple’s iPhone user guide. This is a qualified capability for some iPhones, not a guarantee for every Apple product or every circumstance. A device being offline does not mean every Find My function will remain available.
Privacy safeguards have to grow with coverage
A broader tracking network can help an owner recover property, but location tools can also be misused to follow people or property without permission. Apple says AirTag, Find My network accessories and certain AirPods have unwanted-tracking protections. It warns that they should not be used to track people or property without permission, and that doing so is a crime in many countries and regions. Any expansion should preserve and improve those safeguards: alerts should be understandable and actionable, and product design should make consent and ownership boundaries clear. Apple’s descriptions of encryption and anonymity are relevant privacy measures, but they do not remove the need to address misuse risks.
What Apple should promise—and what it should not
Apple should not promise that every object it sells will be trackable in the same way, or that a Find My label guarantees recovery. Instead, it should set a clear standard: evaluate each product for practical recovery value, use an appropriate implementation, publish an exact feature list, and provide proportionate privacy and safety protections.

That approach makes Find My more dependable without pretending every product has the same hardware, capabilities or risks. It also gives customers a clearer answer before purchase: what they can locate, how they can try to recover it, and what the system cannot promise.
