If an RCA-to-HDMI adapter shows no picture, check four things first: the converter must accept RCA composite video and output HDMI, it must be powered as its manual specifies, the yellow lead must connect to the video input, and the TV must be set to the HDMI port receiving the converter’s output. Also make sure the source is on and actively playing. Work through the checks below before deciding that a device is faulty.
Check the converter’s direction
RCA-to-HDMI conversion is directional. For a DVD player, VCR, game console, or other composite source connected to an HDMI-only TV, the converter must take AV/RCA/CVBS input and provide HDMI output. A device labeled HDMI-to-AV does the reverse and will not convert an RCA source for an HDMI television. A cable with RCA plugs at one end and HDMI at the other is not, by itself, proof that active conversion is built in. Check the labels and the maker’s instructions; examples of product documentation describing the required direction include AVSL’s 128.511UK converter and Megasat’s AV-to-HDMI converter.
Power the converter separately
Many converters need power in addition to the RCA and HDMI connections. Connect the included USB or DC supply as directed by the converter’s label or manual; do not assume that the TV’s HDMI connection powers it. Models differ: AVSL’s listed model is USB-powered, while Megasat’s documentation describes power supplied through the playback device’s USB port. Use only the voltage and current specified for your own unit.
Match the RCA leads to their jacks
- Yellow: composite video, often labeled CVBS or Video.
- White: left-channel audio (L).
- Red: right-channel audio (R).
For a picture, the yellow plug must reach the converter’s video input, not an audio jack. A loose or misplaced yellow lead can leave you with sound but no image. Confirm that the source’s RCA outputs go into the converter’s inputs, rather than connecting two outputs or two inputs together.

Choose the matching HDMI input and activate the source
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Use the TV remote’s input/source control to select that exact HDMI port.
- Turn on the source device and start playback or otherwise make it output video. A powered-off source, paused device with no active output, or wrong source mode will not provide a picture.
If the TV still reports no signal, try another HDMI port or a known-working HDMI cable if available. A TV’s own composite input may also be useful for testing the source directly, but whether a particular TV has compatible composite input—and how it is shared with other ports—is model-specific. Check the TV manual; Sony’s analog-cable no-picture guidance also recommends checking the selected input and connections.
Check video format and output mode
Composite sources use analog video standards, and converters vary in which ones they accept. If the source or converter is from another region, compare the source’s PAL/NTSC-family output with the converter’s documented support. For example, AVSL lists PAL, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, SECAM, PAL/M, and PAL/N; Megasat lists the same set for its named model. Those are model-specific specifications, not a guarantee that every converter accepts every format.

If your converter has a 720p/1080p output switch, try its other supported setting when the current mode produces no stable image. AVSL and Megasat specify 720p or 1080p output at 60 Hz for their respective products. Such an output setting scales the incoming signal; it does not add detail absent from the original composite image. Adafruit’s product description notes that its converter “doesn’t magically clean up NTSC signals and make them 720p/1080p.”
Isolate which part of the chain is failing
Once direction, power, connections, input selection, and source activity are checked, change one component at a time. These tests help narrow the problem, but none proves a particular device is defective on its own.

- Try a different HDMI port or cable that you know works.
- If the TV supports composite input, connect the source directly using the TV’s documented method.
- Try another composite source with the converter, if one is available.
- Try the source and converter with another compatible display, if available.
If no test changes the result, note the source, converter, and TV make/model; how the converter is powered; which HDMI input is selected; and whether you get sound, a partial image, or no signal message. Use those details when checking each product’s manual or contacting its maker. Generic instructions cannot identify a hardware fault in an unspecified device combination.

Consider a replacement only after confirming that the existing device has the correct RCA-to-HDMI direction and that its power supply, format support, connections, and output settings match your setup. Look for a powered composite AV-to-HDMI converter whose documentation clearly specifies RCA/CVBS input, HDMI output, the required power supply, supported analog formats, and available HDMI modes. Check whether audio is carried through HDMI or exposed separately if that matters for your setup. Buy a separate power adapter or HDMI cable only if your particular converter requires one and you do not already have a compatible working item.
